Well my wife had her baby shower this past Saturday so I decided to take a nice little drive across Angeles Crest Hwy. I started a bit later than I had originally planned (finally got onto Angeles Crest at around 10) and was a bit worried about possible traffic I'd be facing. The last time I went up Angeles Crest it was filled with the 'balls to the wall' motorcyclists and then the road-hogging bicyclists. And of course lets not forget the Police! I know they absolutely love getting speeders on that stretch of highway.
I was extremely gun-shy of my speed to start as I did not want a ticket and my cautiousness paid off. At immediate base of the mountain, literally right past the first gate and you round that left hand corner, there was a moto-cop gunning people. Thankfully I was follow another motorcyclist who, unfortunately for him, was pointed at by the cop and had to pull over. I actually thought we were both going pretty close to the speed limit but I guarantee we weren't going more than 10 mph over (I'd wager maybe 5 over). In any case after that I was a bit bummed since the speed limit in the lower portions is only 45. But I was vigilant and set my speed warning to about 55 so that I wouldn't get overzealous.
After about 10 miles of 45 it finally opens up to a 55mph limit but the road gets much more curvy so it instantly became alot more fun. I wasn't too worried about tickets at that point since I wasn't really hitting 60 all that much due to the corners. Too my surprise too, there was absolutely NO ONE . I mean this place was almost like a ghost road. At all three of my stops I never heard any other cars echoing off the canyon walls....it was dead quiet up there which was eerily peaceful.
I recorded my trip via Android/Google's "MyTracks" app which worked out pretty well. My avg speed was off due to me not turning off the recording during my 3 stops (so the 0mph skewed the results) but its still kind of a fun little app to have. Actually I just checked and it shows my average 'moving' speed as 48mph (approximately of course...GPS speed gauges are not always the most accurate). I'd say thats relatively close though since there were several 25mph construction zones and near the end there were quite a few large rock piles in the road that I had to slow to avoid. And what does it finally do when Im driving back down the Cojon pass? RAIN.... :'( My car was all nice and clean too.
All in all a great morning and actually not a long drive at all! I highly recommend doing this run and I'd love to do it again with a group.
