Well my wife had her baby shower this past Saturday so I decided to take a nice little drive across Angeles Crest Hwy. I started a bit later than I had originally planned (finally got onto Angeles Crest at around 10) and was a bit worried about possible traffic I'd be facing. The last time I went up Angeles Crest it was filled with the 'balls to the wall' motorcyclists and then the road-hogging bicyclists. And of course lets not forget the Police! I know they absolutely love getting speeders on that stretch of highway.

I was extremely gun-shy of my speed to start as I did not want a ticket and my cautiousness paid off. At immediate base of the mountain, literally right past the first gate and you round that left hand corner, there was a moto-cop gunning people. Thankfully I was follow another motorcyclist who, unfortunately for him, was pointed at by the cop and had to pull over. I actually thought we were both going pretty close to the speed limit but I guarantee we weren't going more than 10 mph over (I'd wager maybe 5 over). In any case after that I was a bit bummed since the speed limit in the lower portions is only 45. But I was vigilant and set my speed warning to about 55 so that I wouldn't get overzealous.

After about 10 miles of 45 it finally opens up to a 55mph limit but the road gets much more curvy so it instantly became alot more fun. I wasn't too worried about tickets at that point since I wasn't really hitting 60 all that much due to the corners. Too my surprise too, there was absolutely NO ONE . I mean this place was almost like a ghost road. At all three of my stops I never heard any other cars echoing off the canyon walls....it was dead quiet up there which was eerily peaceful.

I recorded my trip via Android/Google's "MyTracks" app which worked out pretty well. My avg speed was off due to me not turning off the recording during my 3 stops (so the 0mph skewed the results) but its still kind of a fun little app to have. Actually I just checked and it shows my average 'moving' speed as 48mph (approximately of course...GPS speed gauges are not always the most accurate). I'd say thats relatively close though since there were several 25mph construction zones and near the end there were quite a few large rock piles in the road that I had to slow to avoid. Ya'll can check the link out here: http://g.co/maps/adk3v

And what does it finally do when Im driving back down the Cojon pass? RAIN.... :'( My car was all nice and clean too.

All in all a great morning and actually not a long drive at all! I highly recommend doing this run and I'd love to do it again with a group.

Cool...just up there last weekend myself. A B8 coming the other way tried to warn us of a cop ahead but it was too late because the cop pulled him over. Great drive though.

Sounds like a lot of fun! Good for you for getting out there before Baby-Tekk shows up!

You're brave not running your plate, though. I had a post up a little while ago where I was up there, doing everything perfectly and still got pulled over! LOL

Glad you had a good time.

Tekk, what rims are those? VMR 710s? 19s? If so, what tire size are you running with those?

Yeah never been super concerned about it. Its the luck of the draw I suppose. I do definitely know to never park in downtown LA or LAX since they ticket for no front plate like crazy :)

They are indeed VMR 710s 19x9.5 ET33. Im currently running 255/35 tires but will probably go to 275/30 (with some spacers) to get a little more rubber on the road.

be careful of angeles crest.. every few weeks cops flood the place and pull you over for anything

since ACH opened up few months ago, 3 people have already died from reckless driving.. which is why law enforcement is cracking down Friday night through Sunday night most weekends

Great shots up there, car looks wonderful and all of the roads on that range are unreal. Slightly OT, but does anyone know if it's open all the way up or not? I tried cutting over to it from Highway 39 this past weekend and it was closed.

You went UP HWY 39? HWY 39 has been closed for 10 years to Angeles Crest.

Angeles Crest HWY itself is open from La Canada-Flintridge to Wrightwood.

ive read it earlier this year:
http://blogging.la/2011/04/15/zomg-ca-highway-39-reopens-to-crystal-lake/

doing some search:
After the Highway 39 was opened on March 22, 2011, Crystal Lake and its businesses were opened, which includes the Crystal Lake Snack Bar and Trading Post

Yeah, but being open to Crystal Lake doesn't mean it's open all the way to HWY 2. Which it isn't. I was up there only four weeks ago.

if you want a great road but its a bit of a drive.

SR178 up to lake Isabella and drop back down into the central valley on SR155 or if you and your car are up for it SR190 "the Generals" highway through quaker meadows.

SR178 only super early in the morning in the summer or early fall only - reason = black ice at the highest parts of SR190
http://maps.google.com/maps?saddr=Bakersfield,+California+(Rio+Bravo+Airp ort)&daddr=M-99+to:CA-190+W+to:CA-190+W&hl=en&ll=35.906849,-118.666077&spn=0.375409,0.837021&sll=35.973005,-118.652344&sspn=0.375094,0.837021&geocode=FQtCHAIdtW_q-CHTypTFgHfMTA%3BFdnIJAIdyyLw-A%3BFYqhJwIdinXu-A%3BFYCTJgIdyMjp-A&vpsrc=6&gl=us&mra=mi&mrsp=3&sz=11&t=m&z=11

SR178 early in the morning is a must as people are friendly and will pull over.

if you want something really badass as far as a road try this one.
http://maps.google.com/maps?saddr=Bealville+Rd&daddr=Caliente+Bodfish+Rd%2FCounty+Rd+483+to:Lake+ Isabella+Blvd+to:Lake+Isabella+Blvd&hl=en&sll=35.62521,-118.458624&sspn=0.047093,0.104628&geocode=FTgVGgIdBs3t-A%3BFXBVHgIdxq_v-A%3BFRIrHwIdI_fv-A%3BFWm8HwIdVkPw-A&vpsrc=0&mra=mi&mrsp=3&sz=14&t=m&z=14

Just know I have only driven the non highlighted section and the highlighted section I have yet to try it !

Also these roads are not for a car that is a bucket there is spotty cell phone coverage in these sections at the best and help is at least 1hr in each direction so tread lightly.
you will scrape altitudes of 7500ft and waterfalls that pour on to the road in some spots if any of you take up the trip post pix !
