View Full Version : I think my transmission just exploded..

the last few days the car has been making a sort of whirling/air noise that I had not yet gotten to pin-point. Drove it 60-70 miles down to VA beach and back today, no problem. Just went outside to run up to the store, and it's slamming into D and R, the engine just revs with almost 0 power-- I say almost because it does sort of *move*, but it didn't even make it up the rhino ramps, so it's effectively 0--
it's also felt like the center-diff was pretty tired, whenever you go past half full lock or so while turning the car would vibrate like my 4WD Durango used to when the 4WD was engaged.
Just got under the car, there are no transmission oil leaks, and the fluid/filter was changed ~ 4,000 miles ago @ 153,000 miles.
does it sound like the inevitable has happened ?
Charging up the vag-com laptop right now to pull codes, and also curiously, the box around the gear selections is gone on the DIC. Also, the Manual mode has not worked since I purchased the car.

let me know what codes you pull on the VAG....
here's what I pulled today:
2 Faults Found:
18010 - Power Supply Terminal 30: Voltage too Low
P1602 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent
18032 - MIL Request Signal Active (Check TCM for errors too!)
P1624 - 35-00 - -
Readiness: 0000 0000
1 Fault Found:
17125 - Torque Converter Clutch: Stuck OFF / No Power being transferred
P0741 - 35-00 - -

This historically means that I'm screwed. ;)

Was this the first time you changed the transmission fluid? I had a transmission go a few thousand miles after a trans flush/fill when it had 90k on it. I believe that there are pros and cons to the new fluid on a transmission that has never or rarely been given new fluid...

yes, wasen't a flush, just a drain and fill, but I will say that the fluid that came out was pretty black. It's possible it went that long on the OE fluid.

I'm not sure If I want to throw more money into the car honestly. It was a stupid impulse buy to begin with, the thought of a powertrain removal might send me over the edge.

Unplug your maf, go for a drive, see if the shifting improves.
The tcu gets a torque signal from the ecu that is based on the maf and if the maf is bad the tcu can act all kinda crazy.
Before you call it a dead trans, I would check/replace the maf.

MAF replace is a lot cheaper place to start.

Funny thing... it was actually the exact opposite. I had forgotten I unplugged the maf to put on the new engine covers. Pluged it back in, trans immediately stopped slamming into gear, and it rolls just fine on the stands.
thanks though Keith :D

Sweet! I'll still consider this one a win for me as Audi Tech of the Internet. It was the maf!

It feels pretty good to go from thinking you were in it for $3k to doh, just plug this back in and its all good! I've done it too many times. The best rule for working on your own car is when a problem happens check the last thing you did first. That's helped me out dozens of times.

Did you have the 6 speed swapped in at AMS? What did that run for labor?
