So my backup camera only works maybe 80% of the time. Other times it just stays on the radio or whatever the last screen was. Also a lot of the time it will be flickering or popping in and out. Anybody else having these issues with their backup camera? Since it is intermittent I fully expect it to work perfectly when I bring it into the dealer.

Yes, just started about 2wks ago. Gonna wait till I have a few things for them to look at. Right now it's that and the grinding noise in the front end under slow moving turns.

Have this problem for a long time now. Dealer always scans it and finds nothing. They won't do anything until they reproduce it. Thanks. [rolleyes]

Were they able to replicate the issue when you brought it in? Mine is intermittent so I imagine it will work flawlessly that day.

I found mine sometimes not working either. When it happens, I pop it back in first and in reverse again and it keeps on happening until next time.

Have you thought about keeping a video camera (or just your mobile phone) in the car so you can at least document the issue?

Now that is a good idea I never thought of. I will definitely tape it with my phone next time it acts up.

Do you guys hear a loud beep when it fails?

When I first got the car, it sometimes fails, then it went away. Now, once in a blue moon, the camera wont turn on, but no flickering. Not sure what the issue is either.

no loud beep here.
It just makes the normal sounds but screen never goes to the backup cam. I know that when it happens to me I am always on the radio/media screen.
I also dont have flickering, there is some degradation on the top and bottom of the picture at times but that is usually at night or when its raining which is expected.

Yes, they were able to replicate it, it was that bad. The first time it happened, it was intermittent, but I was able to get it to shut off for the tech. They replaced everything but the camera. The second time, it shut off everytime the car was shifted into reverse (meaning it flipped to the rear camera view and immediately flipped back to the previous screen; the sensors worked fine though). This time, everything was replaced and hasn't happened since.

Started to have tis issue as well this morning. I doubt my dealer will be able to diag the problem if you guys are having this much trouble having it fixed with the much larger customer base.
I'll keep searching the interweeb to see if there's a DYI fix.

When I first had this issue, they told me the would probably have to rewire the whole thing to make sure everything is right.
Since my problem when away, I decided not to go through with it. I will live with it not working once in awhile than have the dealer rip out wiring and rewire them.

Hey guys!
Maybe anyone know exactly what the root cause for rear camera issues? having the same issue in my S4 B8 2010

Had mine replaced/fixed a couple times and it is starting to act up again. I have to check but I believe it also throws a soft code when I scanned it last.

Thanks RavinJetta! Did they replace both camera and control unit ?

IIRC they actually replaced some wiring in the trunk and not the control unit or camera.

Thanks! will do a scan for my car as well and post the results here.. Could it be just a failing parking sensor causing the issue with camera ? I read it from Audi Q7 users..

I don't think so. A few people have had issue with the wiring that I have seen. I will have to scan mine again and pull up the code it is pulling right now.

It seems like my problem is that the camera will take forever (1-2minutes) to turn off once I am done backing up. Ill be in drive and the rear camera will still be displayed on my screen for maybe 30 seconds to a minute...

Just as another area to check....A friend has a 2008 A6 and he was having intermittent camera issues as well as a DIS warning saying his rear fog light was out. It didn't happen all the time but enough to be annoying. It never acted up at the dealer and he was thinking he'd have to buy a new camera or module. I read somewhere that the camera gets it's ground from one of your rear lights. He took the taillight with the "bad fog light" out and noticed the contactor board had a bunch of corrosion. He replaced the corroded piece in the light and now everything has a clean and new ground. Fog light and camera has been working flawlessly for about a year....with the same fog light bulb.

Try start driving fast immediately after you put the gear from R to D. I read somewhere that it is coded to stay active until speed is less than some value (~20 mph). And if speed is low - it will be active quite long time. I have the same behavior - it seems works as designed here?

I realize this thread is really old, but I wanted to put this here for people searching for answers (like I was until I figured it out)...
I bought my S4 and later the backup camera started working intermittently, flickering, and sometimes not coming on at all. Took it to the dealer and they said it was either the fiber optic cable going from the camera to the control module in the trunk, or the control module itself. I scanned it with Carista and got this:
Back-up camera:
02203 - Audio/Video Input 1
...which didnt help much at all. I figured I'd give the fiber optic cable a shot first because it was cheap. I took off the trunk liner to install it and discovered that it had been replced before, but with a cable that is about 10' longer than the original. This was causing too much signal loss, resulting in the fualty backup camera. These fiber optic cables are used for a lot of the electrical systems in the car, so some shop must have just used the wrong one because they have the same ends. I cant seem to find the part # for the cable, but the price was $80 at my Audi dealer, and I got it online for $40.
Hopefully this helps some else out that is having issues, first thing to check is that cable

After 5 years of putting up with an intermittent backup camera, I mentioned it to my dealer this year, before the extended warranty expired. They replaced the camera module and it's been trouble-free ever since.

I had mine fixed by the dealer too. They claimed it was a known issue and there was an updated module for it.
I can dig through my paperwork but I doubt it will say very much.

Even if it is the deductible might be high enough that it isn't worth it.
All I know is they replaced something in my trunk. Not sure if it was the actual camera or some control board.
If you could find the part it would be pretty easy to swap it yourself.
