Hello everyone,
I've been lurking a few days. Looking to possibly upgrade my daily driver to an Audi S4.
I found one locally being sold privately. Here are details:
2011 Audi S4 / Quartz Gray
Prestige Package (and everything that goes with it: B&O, Advance Key, Nav, Parking Sensors, 19" wheels)
1900 miles (very low)
7 Speed S-tronic transmission
Stainless steel inlays
Sports Diff.
Delivered to dealership: Dec 2011
Extremely clean: He's even put rugs on top of his floor mats.
DOES NOT HAVE: Audi Drive Select or Dynamic Cruise Control
I'm waiting on window sticker but owner said it was @$59k.
Originally asking $53.9k. He's indicated he would take $52k.
Thoughts from everyone?
My general sense is that this isn't a bad deal. But maybe not terrific, either.
Back of napkin calculation:Assuming he actually paid @$57k.... he'd be out $5k for about 9 months of ownership.
I did take vehicle for short drive. Very well planted and just feels much better than a Lexus IS350 I had driven last week. I currently own a Nissan GTR for weekends, autocross, and some road course tracking. Obviously, the S4 feels much more luxurious than the GTR. But with AWD, 4 doors, and semi-auto transmission (for the wife), this looks like a terrific daily driver that can drive to work, pick up clients, take kids to events, etc., etc. Lastly, I gather most people think the water pump issue is not a problem with 2011 and later models.. does that sound correct?
Anyhow, thanks in advance for any input.

Keep in mind that for 2012, those same prestige options are know a la cart on the Pemium Plus. I ordered a 6MT, Phantom Black ($575), with Black/Silver Nappa ($1000), MMI/Nav(2,000), rear diff (1,100), Advanced Key (500), 19" wheels (900), B&O (900), and Carbon Fiber inlays (500)....Total $55,550...negotiated $2500 off for a total of $53,000. This year the Prestige includes Nappa/stitched door armrests (but you wont get that on the 2011 anyway) Audi side assist and adaptive lights.
I really wanted the stitched armrest, but comparing both models with the same options...basically leaves the Prestige costing $2000 more for stitched armrests (I don't put much value in the adaptive lights and Audi side assist).

This is an excellent point. I was toying around with the audi configurator too. 2012 Premium+, auto, nav, b&O, parking assist, rear airbags, carbon inserts = $55,475 (including destination). So I could maybe get this at $53k.
So to save $1,000, I get a 1 year older model with 2000 miles. I also get side assist, napa leather (that was one of his options but not noted in original post), adaptive lights, 19" wheels (rather than 18"). Just seems like it should be more of a discount for the older car w/2k miles.

These things hold their value very well. A 2010 with 40k on it is still worth nearly $40k trade in (that's a comparable car we looked at recently).

Ok, upon further review, the car stickered at $57,900. Invoice was $54,500.00
So I'd guess he paid somewhere around $55.5-$56k. He's asking $52k. Are these cars really just losing $4k in value in a year? (well, I guess it's just 8 months in this case). If so, that really is incredible value hold. I think a counter offer might be in order though.

His won't have the Adaptive Light. That started with 2012 models.
Tough decision though.

Remember that many people are getting brand new 2012 S4's for only $500-$1000 over INVOICE..
I would use true car.com to find out what a new S4 would cost ('11, '12) not the Audi website, and use the dealer invoice as the negotiating point.
Building your wanted car on Truecar.com (SoCAl ad fees =$927, not sure what your local fees are)=
-2011 S4 Prestige with all the options you listed (didn't include stainless steel textured inlays since not sure if they are the upgraded "textured" +$697 invoice)
= Factory invoice of $54,326.
He is asking about this same price. If you add the $500 markup that some dealers are asking for 2012 = Total of $54,826....
You state that he may take $52k, I know that the $2,826 difference is a lot of $ but for a little over 5% more you can possibly get a BRAND NEW car.
If dealers are dealing $500-$1000 on the 2012's (on the lot and special orders) I think that you may be able to find a new 2011 S4 for even less.
I have only read from a couple people on the forums that stated they got BELOW invoice on 2011's but the 2012's are arriving everyday and the dealers that are sitting on 2011's will have to become more aggressive to sell them.
Have you looked at what a new 2011 would actually cost you and checked the US inventory of 2011 S4's?
But is the savings worth it for a car that has less than 2000 miles?? If it was up to me I would look for the perfect 2011 that has all the options I want and see if the dealer is willing to go invoice or below since there may be 2012's sitting next to the 2011 you want
Just my 2 cents
ps you state that the car was: "Delivered to dealership: Dec 2011" I assume you mean 2010

Definitely. I wouldn't pay more than about $48K for it. (But then again, I'm really cheap!;-)

Hit him hard with a lowball, laugh, look disinterested, chat
about the M3 you found on the classifieds, play the game.
Remember that it being a used car you will also be paying
a steeper APR and insurance fees.
Chances are the car has seen many track miles at the hands
of some playboy. Beware of second hand performance cars.
Just my 2c knowing how wild the bunch on Audizine and
Audiworld can get:)
Get a history, go to another dealer and dig out the car's
service history from the system. Can that be done?

Thanks. The a4 idea really isn't a bad idea. But I do like the power and extra few things that go along with the s4 though.

Good luck selling your car, but he's clearly looking for an S4. I don't know a lot of people cross-shopping the A4 and S4. That's not to say the A4 isn't a great car (it is), but I have the feeling that S4 buyers want a car with lots of power, even if that means going to a less expensive car than the A4 that is performance oriented.

Thanks guys for the replies and excellent suggestions. I'm still mulling over options.
One other note on this deal I'm trying to get my head around.
He said he's got the car on a 0% deal for 36 months with the bank (I believe it's audi financial or something). He owes less than car is worth.
If the deal was to go through, he was going to have me write 2 checks. One to the bank to pay off the note. One to him for the remainder.
Is this normal? (It's been a number of years since I've bought a car from a private seller). In this case, it's probably not feasible for us both to go to the bank (because it's likely out of state). So he gets the note paid off and then I'm hoping he signs title to me when he gets it in the mail, right? (he seems to be an upstanding member of society and not likely to be a scammer of any sort). I suppose I'd have the bill of sale to enfore his turning over the title if it ever became an issue.
This is probably more complicated than I wanted but I'll chalk this all up to a learning experience.

This is a good deal. I have almost the same car and you're saving several thousand, which you can use part of for an extended warranty (if you want). I bought basically the same car (2012) recently and actually would've jumped on this deal instead. This guy probably spent around 57k on the car (not including tax/tags/etc). If you can get him to 50k I say pull the trigger.

I was just speaking with a friend who runs an Audi dealership and he's sitting on 4 S4s at the moment - the first time he's had any in-stock units since introduction for the 2010MY. He said the best they've been getting for S4s since Memorial Day was around $500 over invoice.
I'd say that the initial pent-up demand has subsided and your ability to negotiate a good deal on a new model has improved substantially.

Oh, I'm a big fan of Zag. As tgrundke said, I think the market is turning in my favor. So from seller's perspective, the market may not quite bring what he'd like to get. We'll see how it goes. You guys have a great forum here and I really appreciate all the help. If any of you are thinking sports car (like Nissan GTR), you'll find yourself right at home with a forum at nagtroc.org. (I'm jonnyt5050 over there too).
50,500 is the most I'd pay.

If the dealer is willing to CPO the car then I would take it and call it a day. It's an amazing deal for 52k. The miles are LOW LOW LOW. I don't think you will find another one of those. The options that are missing are not something that you will miss.

jonnyt5050

Right. It's a private owner, not dealer.
Basically, I went to audiusa.com again and optioned up a new Audi S4 the way I'd want it. It priced at about $56,275 (premium plus loaded up). From here, I figure I can safely get a new car at $54k. So, how much of a discount do I want to accept a 1 year older model with 2k miles and a color that is my second favorite (although I could have it right now)?. A $4k discount sounds about right to me. (so right around $50k seems to be my crossover point where I'd rather have the used 2011). So it looks like we're about $2k apart. And it may be that he values the car $2k more than I do.... which is ok. Luckily for all of us, there are plenty of options.

Yep, i've seen them sitting, in wicked weird configs, 2-pedals, or loaded to the hilt without rear differential for the nouveau riche to stumble upon.

The cars in stock on the lot has zero to do with demand change...lol The reality is Audi is catching up on production slowly but surely. That being the case just becasue a few are hitting dealers does not mean the the ability to negotiate has changed that much at all yet. In all of my contacts and dealings - nothing has changed but there might be a few more cars out there. Four s4's on a lot is not very many...lol Negotiating for an S4 is really the same regardless because it will never be a super high volume car.

But what about a 2011 in stock on the lot, while there are also 2012's on the same lot and continuing to arrive every week?
I would assume that the dealers are needing to deal on these brand new cars that are "last years model".
Who in their right mind would buy a 2011 over the exact same 2012 if the price is almost exactly the same??
ps I am talking about purchasing not leasing...

Ok, after another discussion, I may come to terms with seller on this car. My main question now:
As a MY2011 which has never been back to dealer since purchase... should I expect this car to have to the differential fixed start leaking on me and a visit to the dealer for a day to fix?
(If I read the sticky thread correctly... it seems many (most?) people are having this problem on MY2011 S4s).

I hope that you're at or near $48K, because that's about what the car is actually worth IMO....(based on what I paid for my car 6 months ago, used with 2.4K miles)
My car hasn't experienced the Sports differential leak. I did have the dealer take care of the water pump, but I did that on MY terms, before it failed, so the car has been rock-solid overall.
Good luck!

You got one heck of a deal. I looked around before buying new and every one wanted way more for their used cars than I was willing to pay, hence pushing me to buy new. We're talking 2010/2011 premium plus models with ~15k miles and asking 54k and not budging.

Yeah, well I ran into that a lot too, but it pays to be patient.
To clarify, I didn't pay $48K for mine, but given the equipment level and MSRP of the car the OP is looking at, and extrapolating from what I paid for mine, $48K would represent a similar "deal" to the deal I was able to work out on mine.

Mine was delivered to the dealer about that same time, and it was included in the recall, so no.
