I just recently got my 2012 S4 and when I play my radio, I notice that a station will be playing HD, but then it goes to non HD, and then will play back in HD, and the quality is signficantly different so I can hear it everytime it changes and its very annoying. Is my radio messed up?

happens to me all the time, depending on where i am at. i'm assuming it depends on the signal strength from the radio station meaning there is nothing we can do about it.

Not sure if this is what you're describing, but my HD radio would occassionally get out of sync w/ the regular radio, and you'd hear brief snatches of highly modulated sounds. Especially noticable on voices. I heard rumblings there may be a firmware update in the works, but that was months ago, and have heard nothing since. I turned off my HD radio in the meantime.

The first thing I did when I got my S4 was turn off the HD radio. Where I live the HD cuts in and out and I didn't care for the constant switching. I haven't heard of any updates for this but I'll keep you guys posted if I hear anything from my service guys!

Much appreciated. So far, I am not impressed with the reception or sound quality of the HD versus my last vehicle.

Having the same problem with 2011 Q7 TDI HD radio in AM. HD cutting in and out even with strongest local stations (Sacramento area). Sometimes get a high "squeal". Local dealer mentioned something about firmware/software update. Others say problem is digital HD broadcasts from the station(s).
Whatever . . .it makes AM HD "un-listenable", so I generally turn HD off.
I haven't heard that Audi recognizes the problem or forecasts a fix . . .has anybody?
