View Full Version : anyone want to start compiling a FATS database for us... 6MT and DSG

I was thinking.. with all these variations in dynos and quarter mile times.. why not do a FATS comparison like the B5 S4 guys used to do.
Obviously we aren't comparing our times with the B5 S4 as gearing is different.. but why not setup a database where we can compare different B8 S4s with different mods.
i think having a database where u log an agreed upon gear (like 3rd) at full throttle where car is at full boost.. and time how long it takes to get through a certain rpm range (B5 guys used 4200 rpms to 6500 rpms).. this can give us a better understanding of stock vs modded cars and acceleration.
just plug in Vag com data for rpms and time into the excel spreadsheet and a FATS time is given.
I guess with gearing .. we should separate the 6MT and DSG and just compare the same transmissions.

Seems like a good idea to me, but I'm not certain that I understand enough about the spreadsheet to be able to create another one...
I will offer to contribute to such a database, should one be created, though....
where is NWS4guy he might know more

zcd2.7t- u dont create a new one.. just use the template they have. u just have to add your values to the white boxes.
just use bottom green box where it says vag com.. basically what u do is copy and paste the rpms (pre and post 4200) and the time stamp associated with each one into the top section white boxes and the pre and post 6500 rpms and time stamps on bottom section white boxes.
when data logging...usually u dont get an exact 4200 rpm or 6500 rpm number and this spreadsheet figures out what that time stamp would be with the pre and post rpms.

LOL @ "FATS", that used to be all the rage 10 years ago !

Exactly. Since you do the pulls in the same gear for everyone across the group, you have a like comparison (of sorts) for your car over mods done as well as against other people. It still doesn't address things like elevation, temps, humidity - all which will affect this. Not even going to mention assuming someone has a straight FLAT road to do this on when comparing to other people.

yeah i guess we can assume everyone is using a flat stretch of road. i think it could serve as another useful aid in comparing mods. it's definitely better than the cross dyno, non baseline comparisons i see from time to time.

I personally like the 60-130 which is done using a vbox which reads elevation changes. The biggest concern is the risk associated with doing 130.

Why limit the range so much? With the B5 there was a reason, but here it seems arbitrary.. its not like you can make a direct comparison to the B5 times, so I'd look to take a longer sample range.

sure.. im down for any range. part of reason with B5 was also that some people got uncomfortable going over 100 mph. 6500 in third is around 90 mph I believe.
we can start at lower rpm maybe? supercharger seems to be fully spooling at 3000-3500 rpms I believe.

Definitely well into the meat of the efficiency range here, I am seeing in excess of 14psi from 3600 on with the pulley and tune.

Im seeing over 14 psi (hit 14.279 max) at max rpms with just my tune and intake (on all 5 runs of my last session) with vag com. [:D]
i can only imagine with pulley having that at even lower rpm. [up]

I'm familiar with FATS training in the shooting world. What does it mean in this context?

I'd definitely start lower, 3k to 6.5k or 7k is a nice strong pull. I've always run mine from 1.8k to 7.3k.
Also worthwhile if people can give a rough DA estimate, when I look at people's V8 logs I ask them to keep track of it.

For Advancing The S4 (B5) iirc. Basically just a way to quantify acceleration improvements without going to the dragstrip constantly. 3rd gear loaded the cars up good, and the range started late because the throttle wouldn't fully open until 4k+ rpm, again iirc.
VCDS logs are a great tool, but everyone has to be honest. It has the potential to turn into a dick measuring contest with people logging going downhill etc.
May be a good idea to get which measuring blocks to record standardized. I gather MAF, rpm, ignition timing, load, and timing retard on both banks for my car... but for the V6T maybe boost, timing goal, timing retard, load, bypass valve opening, rpm would be good values to look into (looking at this from the outside).
