im new to the forum as you guys will probably see as this being my first post. but i have been on the edge about getting a s4 switching over from my mustang roush 427r. i have a few questions and these might have been answered before and i just couldn't find it, maybe. first question i know what audi claims on gas mpg but what do you guys see? on average. also most important question i have, i live in LA im sick of LA traffic and tired of driving manual. i was thinking if i was to get a s4 i would want the dual clutch s tronic, and i want to know what you guys think about it? any known problems i should be warned about ahead of time? does the clutch have a fair life span? or do they burn out quickly? i would appreciate any and all info i can get before i dive in and get one. thank you for any help.

Someone did a thread on some of this recently. Here is alink to that thread:

Generally there the opinion seems to be fairly high, although pure blood manual guys will always want the experience and feel of shifting. I get deliever in a week of an S-Tronic after driving a manual for 30 years strait. Test drive convinced me. I do hear that the transmission predicts the next gear with other clutch, so if you are in 2nd and it predicts third and you drop down to request 1st instead, it can have a slower shift vs what you usually get. But it can execute a perfect shift in .2 seconds, that is better than I can do. And my job has a commute through bumper to bumper traffic that after years with a manual is getting old. I expect that I will be in manual mode 80% + of the time, but we will see.

Our situations are very similar!
I had a 2005 Mustang GT for six years until I got my S4 a couple months ago. My Mustang was a manual and I have the S-tronic. I also live in LA so I can give you some of my impressions on fuel consumption.
It's great to have an S-tronic in LA so you can just chill if there's traffic. The paddle shifting is fun but really no replacement for a manual. I often miss shifting but I *think* sitting in traffic makes up for it. As for the mileage, it's not that great if you have a heavy foot (like most cars). Where my Mustang would get about 10.5mpg in the city traffic I now get about 12.5. Better, but still not 18. I've found that highway mpg is about the same as the sticker. I can legitimately get 28mpg if I'm careful with the accelerator.

yeah i know im not buying no prius so i dont expect much just wanted a general idea and you guys helped me out with that. i can legitimately say i might be the first person on the face of this planet who got injured from his clutch. i think my ankle was already messed up from running and working out but 8hrs of traffic from vegas home. 2 weeks now i cant put weight on my left foot. plus the roush is not a daily driver so for work i drive a old crown vic. i just need one car for daily driving.

Now it's sounding more like my situation. My MkIV is 6MT and I think a combo of its (rather easy) clutch and working out with bad habits that caused my ankle problems. Though my ankle doesn't sound like it's in as bad of shape as yours, the DSG has been instrumental to my healing process. I miss shifting but not so badly as to make me wish I'd just put up with my injury.
