What RPM for a rolling pull?

If you're going to do a XXmph rolling pull, what RPM would you hold at before you smashed the throttle? So for example's sake - a 55 to 120 pull/race.. downshift and hold at what RPM to get the biggest bang from the start?

I would probably just downshift to 3rd and let the DSG select the proper rpm @ that speed. Guessing 4-5k rpm??

I think for your speed, whatever gear gets you 3krpm, thats where you should be prepped to roll from. I think the car has the hardest pull at from there forwards.

From my logging with the pulley I see the largest boost roll in around 3500, so I would def be at 3k+

after months of shit talking - we have multiple "put your money where you mouth is" highway pulls today at the office during lunch. i am going against the following cars - 2008 M3, 2007 RS4, stock gt-r, 2010 m5, and a 2007 sti. oh, and i'm also running my renntech S65 in case my s4 gets knocked out. i really wanted to get an idea what rpm i should be at instead of learning as i go - because these a-holes will never shut up if i lose. yes, my CEO is awesome.. extended lunch an hour for this.. it's been planned for weeks.

For 55 mph I'd say 3rd. You're making peak power at the top of the rev range but at 55 youll be over 6k rpms already where torque is falling off. If it was at any lower speed I'd say second.....

funny, just last night I was playing with an E46 M3. We were at a light, and I let him make an ass out of himself, as I pulled out of the light like an old lady. Next light, when I saw it changing from the other direction, I looked over and smiled and he knew it was on. I pulled like 2-3 cars on him out of the hole, twice, with perfect shifts, my car is stock. As we proceeded to the hwy, he wanted to keep going....So I did a few 55-9X pulls; 3500 in 4th>3rd and got a nice little jump and he stayed his nose to my tail until I backed off. It was all cool, and we both really wanted to see how they measured up. We did this a couple times and the same results each time. He was def stock from the looks of it and was a 6mt too. As we all know that car is much different over 65-70, but out of the hole, he had no chance. He exited giving me the thumbs up. I'm not much of "racer", but it was fun.

OK gentlemen, here's how it went. I'm starving right now.. but posting on the audi forum always takes priority over heath/food/shelter.

we did runs from 55 - 110, or if 2+ car lengths were gained, it was over. I'm going to try to keep this as organized as possible..

MY S4 Vs..

me vs 08 m3 (stock) - I won by 1 car length
me vs 2007 RS4 (exhaust, tune) - I won by a little over 1 car length
me vs 2010 m5 (stock) - I won by less than 1 car length
me vs sti (tune, exhaust, stock turbo) - I won by almost 2 car lengths
me vs stock gt-r - he won by over 2 car lengths. i expected it, but i still cried a little

My S65 vs..
M3, M5, sti, rs4 - all were mercilessly raped by way more than 2 car lengths. wasn't even fun (ok, yes it was)
me vs gt-r - i won by more than 1 car length (we ran to 150)

notable races:
m3 beat rs4 by almost a whole car (that race sounded awesome) i expected it to be more even, but that's what happened, no redo's
m5 beat m3 - very close
m3 beat sti
rs4 beat sti
gt-r beat everything except my s65

i went through 80 bucks of gas in the s65. s4 held it's own, but was the most heavily modded out of the regular car group. i ran in manual mode at first - but my f*%^#ing DSG short shifted early - so the rest i ran in drive in dynamic mode and it did fine. man what a day.. and now i'm supposed to get back to work??

Even stock, I've driven my friends SMG M5 and it is a very fast car, especially over 100mph. I'm pretty pumped to hear that the S4 will take it.

oh without a doubt. the ever so suttle texture of the plastidip acted like dimples in a golf ball - making me way more aerodynamic and helping me pick up an extra advantage :)

we don't have any planned because we don't have a safe (and cop free) space for it with all those cars. i can tell you however i HAVE done 0-70 runs from a dig vs the RS4 and the M3.. i used launch control and beat them both pretty bad. never against the sti, m5 or gt-r though - i assume the gt-r would be the only one that would give me trouble

I had a G37S sedan as a loaner from my dealer when it was in for service and that thing is not even remotely close. The thing that shocked me the most about that car is that even with the 18" all-season tires, the ride was way harsher than my S4. I expected a smooth ride but was very much surprised by how it drove.

i think it's only fair that if the gt-r is getting upgraded turbos, the s65 should get upgraded turbos.

dude the car weighs like 5300lbs with me in it. with bigger turbos i think i could keep up on the highway but 1/4 mile i have no shot keeping up with a switzer gt-r. i'd have to gut the whole car; and i'm not willing to give up my massaging seats and my nightvision ;)
