View Full Version : 2011 Audi S4 with Coolant Problem?

I've tried searching but couldn't find the answer. Tried replying to the dedicated water pump thread but got no response.. [=(]

Anyways, I have a 2011 Audi S4 that I purchased probably 8 months ago. I brought my car in for complimentary oil change at 5k miles and they said they were also replacing my water pump under a recall. Two months later, I notice that my coolant is way below minimum. Looks like it is 10% full. Took it into Audi and they topped it off and told me to just "keep an eye on it."

From what I remembered, the 2011 came with the updated pump. Why am I still having problems with my water pump? [confused] There is no leaking anywhere on my driveway. (weekend car)

TIA.

They probably didn't bleed the system properly. You had an air bubble that made its way into the expansion tank shortly after the work was performed, but the level was still high enough that it didn't trigger a warning. It's probably not leaking and you probably have nothing to worry about.

But keep your eye on it. :)

I just had my 15K maint. and thermostat recall done about a month ago.

I popped the hood this past weekend and noticed that my coolant was well below the Min mark as well. Brought the car into the dealership this morning and they claimed that the coolant was at the Min mark and not below. They topped it off and I was on my way. I'm still a little skeptic with their answer. They should have topped off my fluids when I brought the car in for maintenance. I don't see how the coolant went from Max to well below Min in 1 month. [confused]

Exact same thing here. 2011 S4, 9 months old. They replaced my thermostat during my 5k service. A couple of weeks back I noticed the coolant was about an inch below minimum and yet it hadn't gone low enough to trigger a warning on my dashboard. I called Audi and they told me to take it in for a top up, which I did. Seems fine for now, but I'll be "keeping an eye on it" too...

I had the same thing too, i could have sworn my coolant was leaking as it was way below min. Took it to the dealer, spent a few days there they said they ran tests, had the car on a incline each and every way but couldn't find the problem. Topped it off for me and told me to keep an eye out. Fine till now.... this was 2000 miles ago... weird.

Wonder if these cars will end up as coolant eaters lol. I had a problem after my T stat recall where it was lower. I bought a bottle of coolant topped it off. It was fine for around 3k miles than I thought it was a little low again but then after checking all the time it may have dropped a centimeter lol.

My car does that too. I had the waterpump and thermostat replaced.
The level goes down ever so slowly.
There are NO leaks - took it to 3 different Audi Dealers, just to make sure.
I keep a bottle of G12 in my garage and top it up with 50ml / 1.7 fl oz every month or so.

Bingo - exactly the same for on my S4.

I have same problem with the coolant level a little bit below the MIN line when the car is cold. My car came with updated metal water pump and no T stat recall. Any answer for this issue.

Same here! Just get a bottle of G12 and keep it handy!

Cars will always have some coolant evaporation from the overflow over time. If you're losing a couple ounces over a couple months, it is no big deal. If you have to top off your overflow weekly, it's a problem.

I'm in same boat. Just saw my coolant level was low. I bought some G12 to top off as it was easier than driving all the way to audi dealer.

Do any of you smell coolant from the engine bay when you step outside? My water pump was replaced many miles ago and I seem to have the same slow loss of coolant going on. When I get out of the car, particularly after pushing it a little, I can smell coolant. I haven't seen anything on the floor of the garage and no pink crusting anywhere in the engine bay.

I still smell coolant. But last month one of the 2 bleeder screws behind the supercharger cracked. Why they are made of plastic I have no idea!
Engine coolant was everywhere, So I'm hoping it's just that I'm still smelling.

Had my Tstat replaced 2500 miles ago. I have been smelling coolant in the car ever since. Aggressive driving makes it worse. I am losing very little coolant. It was actually overfilled when I got it and now it is at the max line.

I hate that sweet smell and am going to take it back for them to check out, but I already know they'll say it is fine.

after 3 weeks of ownership, I watched for/noticed low coolant in my 2012 thanks to threads here and on AW. had it topped off at the dealer and bought a bottle of g12. will keep an eye on it.

how do you guys mix the coolant? i noticed mine is right at the min line and was going to add some. It says you mix it 50:50 with water. Do you mix it before you add it to the coolant tank?

Yes and only use distilled water (you can just get a gallon of distilled at the drug store) then mix it and put it in. I usually just put half the water in another container, then put half the coolant in the gallon container with half the water, then put the other half of the water in the coolant jug with half the coolant, shake both and you have 2 gallons of diluted coolant ready to go.

My 2010 also needs a few ounces every few months. So does my VW CC. No visible leaks on both cars.

Can any G12 coolant be used to top off the car. Is there a specific one that is compatible with the coolant used by the dealer? Not sure if the "plus" and "plus plus" means anything? Thanks!

Mine still loses a tiny amount over time, and it really bugs me because if there are no leaks (I've looked a lot, and have a super clean engine bay), the only place I can see it disappearing is somewhere in the supercharger. It's a closed system... it shouldn't just lose some over time.

Well another consideration is a possible leaky SC intercooler.

On my old MB C32 AMG, the SC heat exhanger started leaking coolant fluid into the intake ports. I had to replace my SC heat exhanger, since it was leaking. It was a common problem on the MB C32 AMG. One just needs to pressure check the system or pull off the blower and look into the intake ports for remnants of cooling fluid.

This may help. Cannot mix g11 with g12. But don't worry. They don't use g11 anymore. Buy some G12++ or G13 and its backward compatible with g12+ or g12.
