so i pickedup a set of audi a4 wheels
OEMs on the 16s are 7" wide
the new ones are 7.5" same offsets of 45mm but 17' instead of 16"
My question is i feel as the fronts are rubbing should i throw on a 5mm spacer?

they should not rub at all.... but throw some spacers on for a better look!

Rubbing on what? Your brakes I hope because the gap between your fender and wheel is greater than the distance between here and the UK.

The clearance between your wheels and control arms doesn't change when you hit a bump

^ I don't even think that's possible... You must be feeling things [:p]
Edit: vinchenzo beat me to it...

Maybe they are sunken in so far you may be hitting the inner side of the fender liner (you can easily tell by pulling off a wheel and check for rub marks)
I'd toss a set of 10-15mm spacers on them anyway just for the sake of looks.

Heres the pics fellas
Im trying to think of the best possible way to explain it...so even though there .5" wider there should be no issues?

My winter wheels are 18x8 225/40/18's et45 and I have 0 issues.
Rock some spacers just to push them out further if it makes you feel better. Or pull the wheel off (since you said you hear rubbing on bumps) there will be rub marks on the tire, and see where it's coming from and adjust accordingly.
