I finally decided on all the components for my stereo install this summer and now my only real question is how thick will the mounting ring need to be behind the 6.5 components I intend to use in the front doors? I see some online that are offered in either 1/2" or 1" or I was going to build my own out of mdf if I needed 3/4". Anyone know offhand?

Wow, I totally forgot to include the most important info. It's a B6 A4 with the non-Bose system.

If you remove the stock basket and add 1-1/2" of spacers (two 3/4" spacers) you will have mounting depth for just over 3", maybe up to 3-1/4" speakers. The bottom of the ring will interfere with the door panel and you will have to add a large chamfer to it. See my build log for photos. I have a 1:1 PDF of the shape of the ring I can send you if you want. Also, I recommend using plastic spacers instead of MDF, since MDF will absorb water and expand.

Thanks. I'll look for your build log and see what I can gather from there. I was thinking of using the plastic ones from the site if the sizes worked out, so I guess I'll take a 1" and a 1/2" and mate them together before the install. The speakers I'm looking at (Boston Acoustics SC60's) have a 2 7/16" mounting depth so I'll use the 1.5" and have a little extra clearance rather than push it.

I'll take a copy of the pdf if it's not too much hassle so I can get an idea.

Just realized I had a follow up question. Whats the best place to tap the inputs for the front speakers if I want to run them off an amp?
