OP, hopefully someone will chime in soon, I don't have access to my car right now, and don't recall the number. I'll be back home next week if you don't have an answer by then....

Personally, from being in the electronics industry I would recommend a yellow top or a blue top. The specs on paper for all three optoma's are pretty much the same, but the true differences between the 3 are big. (there's also SVR batteries that are similar to a blue-top)...

Stock battery is :Group 49 / H8
Cold Cranking Amps: 720
Weight: 53.6
Width: 6.89
Length: 13.94
Height: 7.48

Red Top is basically a sealed starter battery, and is not meant to be deep cycled.

Yellow Top is a deep cycle battery, with low internal resistance so it can supply a steady output and soak-up some voltage ripple when the heavy load demands of our cars / stereo require.. These batteries also last longer vs a red top, and not only in runtime for reserve power, but the years it will last in the car. (I run one of these myself and have owned it for 4 years now...was in my old car)

Blue Top is similar to Yellow, but has higher amperage output, lasts slightly longer than a yellow, charges faster slightly as well.

SVR is basically like a blue top, in a conventional appearance package...

The battery that will fit is any of the group 34, 34/78, or D34M...

I've worked as an installer and have built high-spl competiton vehicles (30 - 10" subs in a caravan),
high-end stereos on yachts ( http://www.speakercity.ca/boats/carver38/index.htm ),
mild sound-Q systems (http://www.speakercity.ca/cars/e500/index.htm) to wild as well,
and even installed stereo's on Harleys (not my installs at this link (http://www.sidecarcycles.com/PRODUCTS.html) , but the products these guys make are bar none the best integration / appearance I have ever used on an HD... hell, best quality I've used anything aftermarket that looks and fits better than factory...) .

The point is, I've had practical uses with all of the above batteries and would not reccomend a red top to anyone. They aren't a bad battery, but you have better options for the same money, that will last you many more years, and will not diminish in performance if you deep cycle them (or your alternator dies).

I used a yellowtop in my previous car, and had no complaints, but that was in Phoenix and Texas. Moving up to Wyoming starting power in the winter took priority, and the OP looks like he's in Chicago where the winters are pretty harsh too, which may be why he's also looking into the Redtop like I did. Two winters so far and I'm pleased!

I was told that using an optima battery causes added stress to the alternator by H2Sport and that they shouldn't be used.

I had a Yellow Top Optima in my old car and ended up having to replace the alternator. I don't know if the battery caused it or just that the alternator was old and defective.

Can anyone confirm?

Never heard that, and in 2 years, I haven't seemed to run into any charging issues.

Why not just an OEM battery?

Why not just an OEM battery?
Deep cycle, sealed AGM-type batteries are superior in every way. They perform better, and last longer (some with better warranties). If one's not worried about it, then save the money and go with OEM. I for one won't ever be replacing a battery with anything other than a good AGM battery though.

I've had a red top optima in my last 4 audi's, the same one, which has been 13 years. I can't believe it's lasted that long but it has. None of the cars have had any starter or alternator issues. So i'm pretty comfortable with the red top! Although I will look into a yellow top next time given the above info. (I have a yellow top thats been sitting in the garage for 3 years.. not sure if it can be revived but I'll try.
