The ticking you hear is the cam follower for our high-pressure fuel pump and is natural so get used to it. Out cars have a timing belt by the way.

unless youre sure you should rethink the post. 2.0ts are DOHC. and are timed in the back of the head with a timing chain.....though its probably not the noise. but none the less....i see more inaccurate info posted on audizine than accurate..

[facepalm]B7 a4's with the 2.0t have timing belts. The 3.2 v6 has a chain.

*smashes head* oh silly me, i must have pretended to remove the 2.0t cam timing chain/tensioner(well compressed tensioner) while replacing a shit ton of crap soft cams.. i <3 forum knowledge.
PS, you wont find a DIY on this job on audizine, as 75% cant remove the valvecover. its not as easy as a timing belt..

Its also referred to as an adjuster, and yes it exists. I am pretty sure I have narrowed down my intermittent "loud" tick to the adjuster as well, but it hasn't been an issue and its farther down my list of work right now.

if youre talking about the electronic adjuster, as opposed to the cam chain tens, they can get clogged up with crap, saw that alot more on the 3.2s though.

That is completely false. The blinker fluid needs to be changed, immediately.

I second this. You can't just jump to conclusions with cars... Change the blinker fluid and see if the problems persists.

I seem to have the same issue. Confirmed not to be cam follower, per replacement. Also consulted w/ Phil as noise not common w/ 2.0 engine.
Please report back on your findings and best of luck!

OP, if you determine it is the cam chain tensioner, I had to R&R mine when I replaced my camshaft. I can give you some pointers, but no real DIY.

Cheers,
brought to the dealer today and he thinks that its cam wear and after awhile metal pieces/shavings get into the system and cause the tick with wear

Umm, I've actually swapped the tensioner before. Its stupid f'in easy. Got mine in 2 hours.
For the person who thinks there isnt a chain in a 2.0t.... You need to buy a honda......

PROOF now we dont have a SINGLE over head cam so does god will the intake cam to spin in sync with the exhaust[confused] [confused]
First off our cars are driven buy a timing belt that connects to ONE cam. The other is drive by a chain and tensioner. To replace this part you need to:
Your going to have to remove a bunch of other things, torque bolts to spec. Torque them to the tightening order as well. This is a cut down version.
1. Remove valve cover. Pull HFPF in whatever order you please. Common sense prevails.
2. Remove intake cam retainers. Also remove the cam positioning sensor. You can see this next to the exhaust sprocket that the timing belt attaches to. Its easier to lift the intake cam out of the car with this remove.
3. If you do not want to count the chain links between cam sprockets then DO NOT REMOVE THE CAM COMPLETELY. to be safe mark the teeth and the chain with a china marker or dab of paint.
4. Unbolt the tensioner.
5. put new one in between chain and cams.
6. reinstall.
7. Turn around time <4 hours.
Ohh yea, most importantly you need a specific audi tool for the job. Without it you cannot complete this. Heres an image.

I have a 2.0t and it has the ticking and knocking issue. I had the cam, cam follower and fuel pump replaced. I have read in multiple forums that it is the cam chain tensioner. Any one sure on how to know?

I changed mines out after eliminating all other possiblilties. From what I learned its more common on 2005.5 B7. Is the sound coming from the rear of the engine? Also, does the ticking/knocking start to happen only when the engine is up to temp? You may also want to change out your cam chain while your at it. You will also need new gaskets and sealant. Its not a easy job but Im glad I did it. Engine runs much smoother.

Is it really a bigger problem in 2005.5? In my 2005.5 I have definitely encountered this ticking/knocking noise more than once. Its more of something that is off and on it seems like, never constant and sometimes very noticeable. When I have checked it out or tried at least seems like all my noise was coming from the front of the engine bay near the tensor. Have not taken my car in for the cam, follower, and fuel pump yet under extended warranty. Think that may help?
Thats what I read in another thread, that its more common in 2005.5, so that along with other factors prompted me to go ahead and change it. If your ticking is not from the rear and is on and off, then I dont think its the tensioner. Mines always started ticking louder after about 30 minutes of driving, and especially more noticeable right after i take my foot off the gas.

Here's a thread that convinced me to do it. They also list the parts numbers.

Hi,
First sorry for my English !
I recently bought my a4 2.0 tfsi 200 and unfortunetly the year of production is 2005 !
I have already changed the cam follower, the pcv, the broken dump valve (which probably makes the power back from 150 to 200 hp) but the engine makes a dirty noise when at idle when the temperature is hot.
I'm going to change the tensioner but I would like to know why I have to put the engine in TDC position if I don't change the adjuster ? Other question, why does it only make noise when it's hot ?
Thank you for your answers
