If I recall correctly, the mounting points are different on a Bosch unit vs Valeo unit. Simply look at which one you have, and get the same brand in 120 amp. My alternator went south after I first purchased the vehicle (learned how to really drive standard with my vehicle, and stalled one too many times. one last stall, and my alternator was shot). I am not even sure what amp the old alternator had, nor did I care. Just get the 120 amp and be sure you replace it with the same brand that is in there currently.

ok, so the 120 amp from any 1.8T B5 or would a 2.8 work as well? I'm looking on car-part.com for local junkyards and they're showing a bunch from '00, '01, and '02 models. I'm about to pick one up.

Not sure if it differs from 1.8t to 2.8. But having the same brand model that is curently in your vehicle matters. And just get the 120 amp unit.

car-part for life! they are usually pretty good with knowing compatibility too, if they list it it will most likely mount up without a problem.

Is the only way to identify the unit by taking it out or taking off the IM?
I had a quick look and couldn't seee any obvious markings.

How do I make an alternator from an '01 fit a '99? It was listed as compatible, and does fit in the mounting locations. However, the one cable on the rear attached differently.
