I have a 2008 2.0T 6MT Q. When I was pulling out of the driveway this morning I noticed a strange chatter as I pulled away in 1st. Then on my way to work I noticed a little vibration. I pulled over, looked around and didn't notice anything odd. Then as I was pulling away there was a loud rough chatter/thumping as I released the clutch. This seems to happen in 1st and 2nd gear then goes away. My clutch doesn't seem to be slipping. Any ideas? Somebody please tell me this is something simple. I took it back to the house and drove the wifes car. I will do a little more investigating when I get home but if it's not something visible, I'm not sure what to do. Gotta love Mondays. Any advice would be appreciated, I'm not too familiar with transmissions.

Hm, how many miles? Possibly a warped flywheel?

62k. Warped flywheel? Is that a common failure. I'm Stage 2 also.

No but it's possible to damage, I've never heard of it happening commonly on our cars. Just can't think of what else it could be unless something with the driveline. I had a odd vibration on my cobra and ended up the driveshaft was loose, real safe. Could be a lot of things.

I think I figured it out- I hope! I crawled under the car when I got off work. The only thing I noticed was the driver side motor mount leaking oil. I also notice most of the vibration seemed to be coming from the driver side. I took it by a local transmission shop, the mechanic hopped in and as soon as I pulled out of the lot- he said motor mount. I am going to order some. If that is the case- I am very glad that's all. Thanks for the reply.

motormounts failing seems to happen to our cars around your mileage.. you are a bit early but yea they fail.....replace with something better then stock tho, 034 motorsport sells firmer motor mounts they are not the cheapest fix but they are certainly not something thats going to make you crapyourself when you see the bill

Didnt even think about that and that is probably the most obvious, glad it most likely isn't something crazy for you.

So I replace the leaking motor mounts. I haven't driven the car much in a few weeks and the problem seemed to get better but I just drove into work and seem to be getting the same issue. Think it might be a transmission mount? Anymore ideas? Thanks

Very interesting. I've got a 2005.5 2.0T 6MT quattro with about 62k miles on it and just this weekend had the exact same problem. My first thought was the clutch or motor mounts. My symptoms are exactly the same as you so I'm looking forward to seeing if you find a solution.

I haven't had a chance to look yet but I'll keep you posted on what I find out.

Here is what I have found...

The chatter/banging I was hearing and feeling was my downpipe hitting the transmission mount frame/bracket. I initialy replaced my motor mounts because one was leaking and I thought that was the culprit. I replace the motor mounts with the RS4 mounts. These mounts are a little stiffer which causes a little more vibration. I thought that fixed the problem. After driving for a hour or so the noise came back. Even worse this time. So I thought for sure my transmission because there was a horrible chatter and vibration as I was changing gears. I decided to go ahead and put a new transmission mount on to see if that would help. I am trying to sell the car so I thought it would be a good time to put the stock cat back on in place of the test pipe. So in the process of removing all this I noticed the downpipe was almost rubbing on the transmission mount support. I could jsut smack it with my hand and it would bang. When I removed the test pipe I compared it to the stock cat and it was about 1/2 inch shorter- hence the clearance issue. So now I have new motor mounts, a new transmission mount, and the stock cat is back on. Problem solved- I hope. I seem to be getting more vibration but I am assuming that is because the new stiffer mounts. I am very glad it wasn't my transmission- I hope you are as lucky. Hope this helps.

Interesting. Glad that you found an inexpensive fix for yours. I swapped out my spark plugs today (quite overdue) and then started it up to watch for abnormal engine movement. The bad news ... it was completely normal. The motor mounts look fine. Then I pressed in the clutch and it feels really strange. I'm 95% sure I'll be getting a new clutch in the coming week. Oh well.
