And I must say, it's a much improved car. You may not care for the looks, but this new Jetta (and the MkV platform in general) is leaps and bounds above the old.
So much more room, that trunk is just massive. The interior on the base model isn't all that great, but step up to real leather and it's very nice.
Still like the looks of the outgoing Jetta, but wow you see the two generations side by side and what a drastic difference. Really makes the old one look square and boxy. And in person, the notions about it looking like a Corolla are quickly gone.
All-in-all a very nice new car from VW. They just need manual trannys, and a bigger motor. A good few inches of drop would be nice too. [:)]

Yeah I went and checked it out over the past weekend as well. I love the front. But the 2.0T engine won't be in (Canadian) showrooms till May so I didn't go for a test drive.

Sorry Anthony, I have to disagree with you on all accounts. The styling is strictly subjective but no matter which way you look at it, it's still Japanese influential design.
Room, sure, may have more but when I pulled my MKIV Jetta next to it, I had just as much trunk space (even by the actual #'s) and even more in the front part of the cabin where the driver and passenger are seated. In the Jetta V, they sacrificed precious room up front so those in the rear would be more comfy. Complete mess up on VW's part since 95% of the Jetta's I see on the road do NOT have someone in the back even utitlizing that space.
Why would they need a bigger motor? They can't utilize effectively what they have. 2.5l of naturally aspirated engine and yet it still has 30 less hp than that of a 1.8l turbocharged engine? Sad, just sad. And this new 2.0T, what will it have? Prolly not much more than what the great VR6 engine would have given you.
Overall, this is just a small part of the Volkswagen downfall. First was the Phaeton and now this Japanese influenced Jetta V. Good luck VW, you'll need it.

Well we can agree to disagree. I think it's a great car, and I'd rather own one over the MkIV Jetta. Well, with a manual tranny and the 2.0T or a VR6.
The new trunk is waaaaay bigger than the old.

Are you kidding? Not at all. Tuner wise, it'll be great for those that love tuning a turbo engine, however, from the showroom floor, what is it expected to be rated at? I haven't heard yet.

I'd assume 200HP like in the Audi.

Because they're stepping up to the 3.2 VR6. Now that the 2.0T is 200HP, no need for the measly 2.8 VR6. [:p]

well they've done away w/ the 2.8 and the 3.2 might get replaced by the 3.6 from what i've read.

Yes, the 3.6 will be used in the higher version cars, not sure if it'll be in the GTIs though. At least not at first.

Sounds like VW eliminated the nose heavy option, and reserved it for 4-motion only, so that GTI's remain as light and nimble as possible, like the good old day's...

Makes sense. But damn the VR is such a good motor!

i saw a couple of Jetta V's on the way to and from work today and they dont look so bad on the road along with other cars.
