Now I am trying to figure this one out. I know the thing on the right is the ashtray. but what is the thing on the left supposed to be. there is nothing there in the hole.

The jackis for an old car phone. The ashtray deal is where the OBD port is on some prefacelift models, it was probably more cost efficient to keep the same mold even after the port was moved to the dash underside.

No, it is not for a bag phone. It is for the late 90s style nokia/motorola phones that were available as a factory option around that time, pre-bluetooth integration. IIRC, the Audis had permanent-mout car phones, BMW had a phone(motorola) that could be docked in the car and used as a personal phone as well.

The port behind the armrest is an alternate location for the diagnostic port. Many European cars designed just before the implementation of US OBD-II standards had diagnostic ports in the center console. The launch of the B5 A4 in Europe was 1995, one year before the US launch and one year before (US)OBD-II. I don't think this location was ever used in the NA market cars, not sure if(or how long) it was used in the home market cars.

Only cars from 1996 have the OBD port in the center console thing.
