View Full Version : check your cam follower !!!!!

i have seen those wear out and destroy the cams and pumps. until a couple of days ago i got a 2.0t in the shop with destroyed engine...
most of them i seen the wear hole on the follower was sharp, that means it wore down evenly over a long period of time all those cars were in 60k and up mileage. However, this a4's follower had broke. Meaning the edges on the hole looked like the center broke off, then that piece got stuck under the cam chain and broke the following: cam chain, chain cover(500$+) chain tensioner, piece of the head, and bent valves, broke off teeth of exhaust cam, also the pump got messed up and the intake cam lobe. the car had 70k on it, later i checked 2 more 2.0t a4s for the same problem and found the same scenario waiting to happen, one had that piece stock under the cam chain tensioner, and the other one just had it flying around with the chain scraping the cover and waiting for the chance to get in between moving parts, and the mileage on the cars was 53k and 62k. also what i noticed is that in all 3 cases the piece was too big to fit through the oil drain ports under the chain cover so it really have no where to go and it will stay there until something really bad is going to happen.....
so check the followers even if you have low mileage..... ill post the pics of damages and the followers later.

Lol, thanks for heads up, but most of us are very aware of the cam follower issues. I mean the front page has a thread on it, even the next page has a couple, and new cam follower failure thread will pop up about once every other week or less.

...we are well aware and we know about the premature wear of the follower, but take a moment and read what he is saying. It's about the EXTENT of the DAMAGE - it's more than a damaged cam, HPFP and follower. Thanks for taking the time to share, 390wheel!

Well, not all of us know it all like you do... I'm sure there are people that will find the information useful and take the appropriate action.

I hate to say it but ANY pieces of lose metal roaming aroung in your engine is a ticking time bomb and will cause complete engine failure depending on where that piece gets stuck at..... s of now I have gone through 4 followers and have one sitting on my dest waiting for its turn in there.....
On a side note ive been meaning to try the ZDDP Plus but worried about using it on our engines as iv'e heard using too much is bad too and dont want to clog any oil jets or that little oil reducer on the turbo (really bad scenerio).
So those are my concerns but really do want ot use it to see how much it helps with the wear on the follower as iv'e always used the Castrol synteck european 5-30 oil but mostly the Castrl syntech 5-30 in its early life and ive always changed it at the 10k mark up until a year ago then started to do it at 5k.

if you would read my post to the end, you would notice that im not talking about the fact that the followers fail. i was talking about the fact that the piece that all of you find broken off of the follower is still flying around the cam chain, and just waiting to get the chain broken..... and most of the people take the broken follower out and do not take the chain cover off to check for the piece.....

Nothing new. Most of us know that if there is a piece missing from the follower it is going to be swimming inside (even if very fragmented) and not just magically disappear. That is why anyone that is that far along is told to take it to the dealer, because there is no way around there being severe damage.
I see there are some newbs here that have benefited from this thread though, so that's great, but just seems like common sense really.

my point was, if you take the pump off and see that the follower's center didn't wear through (sharp edges at the hole) but broke off it means that the piece is under your chain cover so take that off too and find the piece... because the oil drain holes in the head are too small for the piece to fit through, so it will not go down into the oil pan.... and i see that all of you guys are changing the followers, but didn't see anyone to look for the missing piece.

This is what is pissing me off that my dealership will not even replace my HPFP / Cam despite me showing them pictures of it damaged. There is a piece of metal now floating around in my engine, I don't have the experience to look for it, and with a car still under warranty should not have to be either. When a CEL finally comes on I am going to request they find that piece.

Mine won't either, it is ridiculous. I showed them pictures of the follower worn all the way through, HPFP worn down, yet because of no CEL they are doing nothing.

Not unless you pay out of pocket. Just get it taken care of or try the DIY. I'm at 45k miles and will be replacing my follower for the second time next week.

Any info is good info. Let the man inform us on his cam follower, cam shaft, can shaft, cant shaft, or whatever the hell kinds of cams he desires. I find it funny that the anonymity given to all of us by way of the internet and discussion posts causes people to think they can be total d-bags about peoples questions/comments. Think if you were to go to the audi dealership and ask them a question that theyve had someone else ask before, and they just flipped out like a total douche telling you how lame the question is...youd probably kick them in the nuts right?

Same here. I have 51k and even though I have CPO, the stealership wont look at it without charging me. An Audi technician says just do your oil change every 5k and you should be fine and don't worry. I'm still gonna take mine into a shop to have it changed.

I change my oil every 5k, my cam follower has a hole right through it, I have a CPO and my dealer is doing nothing at all. Going to be calling some other dealers later to see if I can find one to work on mine without a CEL being on.

Pull the codes from the car and see why the CEL came on. Also, the cam follower should not affect your oil pressure. It can cause a CEL to come on and limp mode but def. not oil pressure. Unless the top broke off causing it to go into your engine and f**ing every thing up.

For those of you not goigg DIY and having the dealer take a look, what are you paying? I'm going in for 55k maintenance to keep my CPO and I'll likely just tack this on to the already stupid bill. Would be nice to know what other dealers out there are charging though

AFAIK, this is just a 2.0T issue. It doesn't affect your 3.2.

Show them the TSB, it shows you there what needs to be replaced according to the wear. They have to replace them, it's not up to them. AOA pays for that if under warranty. I had my cams HPFP replaced cause of a broken cam follower. They said everything was fine when I actually had pictures with all the parts follower, cam and HPFP badly damaged(they didn't know that). I had to go back to the dealership asking to leave everything open cause I want to see the parts. This is how they agreed to change them all. They only looked for the shavings in the oil pan, when actually there were no shavings but the hole piece that came off the follower. I ended up giving the tech $100 to look again for the missing piece(I told him where-I knew it from here-he couldn't believe me), he found it around the cam chain. Too bad I didn't check the chain (since they had it apart) to see if that had any damaged. I don't trust the dealership I go to, they tried to screw me with this big time.
I've learned that being nice to them doesn't help.

While you and I both know that, my dealer (and to some what AoA) disagree. I showed them pictures, showed them the TSB, said to them "see how my follower is worn through? per the TSB that means my cam follower and intake cam should be replaced, oh and see the damage to my HPFP, the TSB says that can only happen if the cam is hitting directly against the HPFP lobe, and that the HPFP should be replaced" But, they trot out the old line of there being no CEL so they have to diagnose it first, and then are not giving me any confidence that the $450 I pay for diagnostics will be refunded once they see it has failed and should be under warranty.

Well this is what I did: I told them you guys open it up. if nothing is wrong I will pay from my pocket for the labor, of course I knew that wouldn't happen cause everything was wrong. I had no cell either. Of course I had pictures but I never showed them because I didn't want to give them reasons to say that somebody else worked on the car. Even like that they tried to only change the cam follower saying that everything else is fine. That's when I said f#$k it, I'm going to the dealership into their shop and I want to see all the parts with the manager next to me. And of course while driving up there I was on the phone with the manager. When he heard that I'm going to see the car he changed into the nicest person in the world. He was like there's no point for you to come up here we'll change everything under warranty.
