My car never came with a spare key. Looking for the cheapest option as this will only be a spare key and probably never used.

When I bought my car, I asked audi how much it would cost to get a replacement. They said (iirc) about $750

LOL I was quoted less than half that for my MKV GTI, which uses the same system.

Well anything at the dealer is expensive. I did some searches and it seems more people are getting it done for about $250

Back in the day their was a big discussion on the mkiv forums on vortex regarding these fobs. The consensus was they couldn't be cut at the dealer because the metal was different than stock and the blanks kept getting messed up.
Also you no longer have to go to vw/audi to have or get key replacements. IIRC the class action suit several years ago now bars then from only allowing dealers to hold the software to reprogram fobs.

My dealer quoted me 125 for the valet key not the plastic one and 250 for the switchblade fob.

This doesn't surprise me, My dealer was bought about a month after I got my car.
I have the replacement insurance... up to 2 key FOB's replaced and programmed per year.
