took a full day....thanks...

I need to replace my cam, cam follower, and HPFP. I know this is probably a difficult task, but how difficult would you rate this task? I'm trying to keep my cost down, so I bought the parts, but the labor is pricey. Looking to possibly do the install myself. Bad idea?

This job is not for the faint-hearted...its tough and requires about 5 special tools...

Job was performed on my car... I didnt have the tools to do the work myself, nor the guts!! I got such a good deal on from Steve (szinkuti) Zink in Ft. Worth, Texas, so he did the job for me!! Car runs completely different now in a good way!! This issue was a long time coming apparently; I was one of those guys that would tell myself, "I'll check my follower later"

DON'T WAIT, this was at 66k miles, completely toast!!

Just as Steve noted in a response to you, the exhaust note is definitely deeper. I already had catback AWE exhaust, drone for me has never been that bad. My flex joint in my downpipe is bad(made worse by the 034 HFC, it is about 2 inches longer than stock), so there is an exhaust leak that is affecting its full potential. HFC definitely allows the turbo and engine to rev faster! Car pulls strong now, for a 2.slow T

If ANY of you are DFW locals, I'll give my full respect to Steve and his abilities!! I will only take my car to him from now on!!

Here is a comparison of my cam lobes. Obviously the top one is the bad one... Look how flat the lobe gets in spots compared to the new one!

you should make a video and post on you tube of how it sounds. now were there symptoms leading up to this problem? mine is running strong but am afraid of what might happen if i dont fix this potential problem.

I will work on the video.

As far as symptoms. I had an occasional fuel cut on the highway when trying to pass. Check engine light didn't come on until right before it failed.
I had a whining noise that I misdiagnosed as the cam and follower... See first post/first picture. I pulled the fuel pump and saw a big hole!!! So I knew the cam at that point was toast. IF YOU EVER HAVE A FOLLOWER WITH A HOLE IN IT, KNOW THAT YOUR CAM IS TOAST. A new follower WILL NOT fix the problem!

Whining noise turned out to be a stuck PCV valve. GLAD i misdiagnosed the cam though... If I hadn't and kept driving it, who knows what damage could have been caused. I could have had to replace the entire motor!

Car pulls strong now. 034 HFC and AWE exhaust make the exhaust note sound really good, need to fix a small exhaust leak before I attempt a video. Believe I had a small exhaust leak before the cam went. Had the HFC installed at the same time, it is about 2 inches longer than stock, so it put the flex joint in my aftermarket downpipe in a bind and made the leak worse.

For those wondering, I am no running APR Stg 2 software. See signature for my other mods. Plan on upgrading HPFP soon and then going APR Stg 2+. I am completely happy with the 034 HFC. I ordered the Oxygen sensor bung extension. NO codes are being thrown. Well worth the money. Turbo and Engine rev faster and pull hard!

Again, I will work on a video for sound. But I suggest finding someone local to hear their setup. The sound clips do no justice to the actual sound note.

I know this thread is pretty old, but are all our 2.0T FSI engines supposed to be that clean of oil under the valve cover? Mine has oil all over and seems to be splashing everywhere... Saw it when I went to change the valve cover gasket. Have oil under my oil filler cap also, even after installing a catch can.

what oil was used and how often was it replaced for the follower to wear out like that?
