View Full Version : For those of us that park in city streets

When I walk up to my car, I do a quick walk around, see if there's any damage, this AM, someone made a license plate impression on my newly painted bumper :(.
Fucking hate that I cannot do a thing about it.
Do you guys just take it, and drive off like me?
Last winter I got side swiped, twice (busted front left side panel + xenon headlight, AND front right side panel + xenon headlight 2 days later). I KNEW what car did it, as I saw my paint on his car, took pictures, filed police report, but they never let me claim it since no one saw it. So I have never, ever had any luck with pursuing these retards that can't park properly.

Yeah, I saw a few cars with those when I went to NYC. That picture is exactly what happens ... nice car, owner takes care of it....and another, shitty car tries to wedge it's way in.

i wonder how helpful two go pro camera's and an external terabyte harddrive wired to a seperate car battery would be.....it would be like survelance and if this every happened you could easily just get the persons license plates.....u'd have video evidence, and could go to the cops everytime
two go pros would cost about 400
battery 100
terabyte hard drive lets say 100?
a sound shop to install everything maybe 200?
so for an estimated 800 you would have evidence everytime something like that happened....if i lived in the city i think i would do this, i mean in the city i imagine people bump into you constantly....
maybe you wouldn't even have to get a battery or a hard drive....perhaps theres a way to wire a car alarm to your car that instead of going off with a siren everytime someone bumps into you, it just activates cameras and records for like 5 minutes?
theres gotta be some programmer/car enthusist in the city that would be able to help you out on this one
i know it sounds crazy but if you could execute it, you would save yourself the hassle anytime someone backed into you...

might be nice if my alarm went off when there was a car 1-4 inches away or something, and warns these fools.
I was tempted to mount a camera on my building, and park next to it every night to catch this prick....but it's a pretty busy street, and has a lot of parking taffic (people leaving and coming), so I park on a street 1-2 blocks away, where traffic is much less. It's been a LOT better, but still getting bumped apparently :(.
My 06 grand cherokee parks on the busier street, never has a bump ... probably because most cars would slide under it, and get nailed in the hood if they were retarded to punk so close.

hahah it reminds me of when i moved my brother from an apartment in jersey city, to a different apt in jersey city, i had an xterra at the time and so i was helping him carry out a couch when i saw a lady parallel park her saturn sedan scraping my rear bumper the entire time....
i walked over to her and was like hi, you just hit my car
she goes "no i didn't"
i go "r u serious right now i watched you completely drag your car across mine....there is even matching paint on my car"
"well i didn't do it"
"ok....maybe you are slow or maybe u didn't hear me.....i WATCHED you hit my car.....there is no way you did not hit my car....i watched it....just own up to it"
"i dont know what your talking about i didn't hit it"
"great well im calling the cops and we'll see about this"
she got in her car and bounced so quickly.....thing is, it was extremely minor damage, xterra's have plastic bumpers and therefore all i had to do was sand the marks down with a little wet sandpaper....i just wanted to hear an apology, call me crazy but i just wanted to hear her say im sorry, i wasn't think and i bumped your car.....but to completely deny it when you get caught red-handed infuriated me enough to follow through with the cops and file a claim to a hit and run... i never contacted or followed through to see what happened (im assuming nothing) but it sure did feel good to tell the cop the exact make, color and license plate knowing that she might be arrested for a misdemeanor

Yea i know how u feel. I usually dont like taking my car to the city but this one time I had to so i decided it park it in a far away spot with little traffic and i got lucky with a big spot. Later that day when i went back to my car there were marks from the bolts of someones lisence plate scraped up and imbedded into my bumper...
Sucks but what can you do without evidence...
Im just waiting until it gets all dinged up then im gonna get a new one...

the more i think about it, the more i feel like the go pro surveliance could work....and work extremely well at that....i mean car alarms have to have a way that instead of wiring the siren to go off, it just triggers the go pros to turn on (they have thier own battery and you can set it to instead of video just pictures every second or couple seconds)
then like most car alarms, after a period of time the siren turns off and there you go....the only thing you would have to do is inspect your car before you get in and drive away....or just everymonth upload the go pros and see what you find....they take crystal clear images and if you mount one infront of your rearview mirro you would neve seeit, and one mounted on in the rear behind a head rest or something it would be kind of stealth....
imagine the look on the jackasses face when a cop picks him up for a hit and run and he deny deny deny's it and then sees the video evidence.....that shit would be like bait car
think of how many dtm bumpers you could buy!!:-D

I bought one of those about six months ago; highly recommended! I keep it in my truck and flip it out after parking.
After living in the city for several years and dealing with ignorant drivers who my bumper as a guide to parallel parking, I ended up picked one of those protectors.
It actually does work, and gives me some piece of mind.

I've been to many cities. I have came to the opinion that you cannot own a nice car in a city if you have to part on the street. Its just not worth the headache of knowing your baby will get messed up by inconsiderate drivers. If you can park in a garage, driveway, or lot...then maybe you can get by, but if constantly park on the street...not worth it. Plus, city roads are terrible and if you actually live in a busy city you can't ever have fun in the car.

It's worth the headache ... cars just too damn nice to not own :D.
People just need to learn to drive, and not use other cars as guides when they try to park.
A few years ago when we first moved out here, my GF had a decent Grand Cherokee, was spotless, and one day she woke up to a car ON her bumper...she was pissed, and keyed the entire side of the car...LOL.

Yeah, after working downtown for a couple years and seeing some of the shit people do to other cars just to fit there god damn prius in the spot sickens me. If I'm going downtown, I park in the garage, end of story. I don't care if I'm making a quick run into a store, it's worth it to save my bumpers.

i'd be worried that having the bumper protector would just encourage people to tap my bumper while parking because they wouldn't have to worry about damaging it. on the other hand, people would tap my Ultrasport ALL the time i had license plate marks from numerous occasions on both front and rear bumpers. my VW Rabbit on the other hand is in perfect condition, never ever been touched. even if i was in a huge space with the audi people hit my bumper, but i can park in the tiniest space ever with the Rabbit and for some reason no one EVER touches it. i don't get it...

Let me specify that I do park in a garage all winter, and have parking spot at my office building downtown as well.
Once winter is out, I street park overnight. When I can't find a good street spot (end car/ corner of the street), then that's when the bumper guard comes out.

It's so funny to see people driving with the thing flapping on their rear. Half of them probably don't understand that it's suppose to be put back in the trunk with they drive lol.

This is why I moved out of the city.

I've lived in nyc and brooklyn for 16 years and always park on the street. I don't park much on city streets that are busy... I usually park far away from the packed streets. I got a great bumper protector called "Parking Armor"...
http://www.amazon.com/PARKING-ARMOR-Reinforced-Protection-REINFORCED/dp/B001RZ65MO
also a front license plate protector that has thick thick foam on it called bump shox. It looks silly but it's easy to take off/on just a little velcro.
The bumper badger and bullly are garbage... I had those as well and they didn't do much or just withered away after a season.
Parking armor really covers the entire bumper. Having a smaller car helps as well.
I have a mint vintage 85 B2 that i put in a parking garage and they scratched the window. They're worse then the street!
This last winter has caused havoc on the roads. It's just sinkhole city now. Oh well, it's just a car. Enjoy it while you can life is short. Drive it til you're bored, then replace.

there should be metal spikes that you can attach outwards so if anyone taps your bumper, the spikes go through theirs...hmmmmmm
Also, I noticed it odd in NYC that all SUVs had the metal bumper fog light grills. I then figured out that they were for parking, and not 4x4ing

Must depend on where you live. I already had a situation TWICE where my car was damaged by another car parking.
1. I was the first car after the pump so naturally I thought no-one will park behind me. When I come back I see some douche from NJ literally pushed up against my rear bumper. He had some doctor plaque on his dashboard so he thought he can park there. I called the cops, they came, and said nothing can be done and didn't even bother to write a police report. Instead told me to go to the police station and file some report on my own (they have some citizen accident report or some shit).......after that they just wanted to leave....I asked them, how come he is not getting a ticket? He is standing at the pump....they looked at his plaque, and were being really lazy but eventually wrote the ticket.....I got in my car and as soon as I switched into N and let go off the handbrake, my car just moved forward. he was really pushed up.
2. Most recent. Went to my old neighborhood to visit a doctor. Parked as the first car, in the first legit street parking before commercial only parking. No cars in front of me. I pass the street about 1.5 hours later and see some van parked in front of me. Still not done with doctor bs I kept going but already had a bad feeling. I come back maybe half hour after that(2 hours total) and see my front grille rings just hanging down. Closer inspection, reveals that the GMC van that parked in front of me literally went into my grille breaking 3 out of 4 ring holder supports. It was a commercial van so i called the company and had whoever picked up the phone find out who was driving the van. Two guys later come and i tell them wtf they did. They ask me how much it would cost to fix, I gave them a price and one of the guys went to the bank. He comes back with the cash in his hand, and was about to give it to me, when i guess the guy from the office that I called calls that guy over, and then comes up to me and says that I can call the cops. Fucking douche bag first admit he did it and now he made me call the cops. I guess they know how shitty NYC really is. Cops come, and guess what? Refuse to write a police report. I had the Police supervisor called and they came by. Had maybe 2 or 3 police cars at that point. Didn't do jack shit except tell me that i can write one of those police reports on my own at the station. There was a camera on the site too but the owner of the store that had the camera and the ******s who hit my car are pretty much one family or whatever, so my chance of getting the tape are very small. I figured karma will get them or ill find a way to get those ******s good one day.
makes me want to put cameras on each corner of my car.

I get more marks on the side of my car from bikers handle bars (i think?). I usually always get home from work at a perfect time to get a parking spot right beneath my apartment window so I can keep an eye on it if need be.
I got home from work and parked up last week, went up to my room to change and happened to look out my window to watch some idiot try to squeeze her old ass camry in front of my car, i watched her hit me twice and leave it parked and touching my bumper...she got out of her car and looked around real quick like she was trying to see if anyone noticed....by this time i changed real quick, grabbed my shoes and ran down the stairs to confront her but she and her car were gone in like a split second.
she took a couple of chunks of plastidip off of my filler plate, thats about it.

Have a friend who did this with his old truck. He found out what was the legal maximum limit that something can protrude from the front bumper of his vehicle and mounted 8" steel spikes (with points facing outward) on this front bumper.
