So Waterfest will come sooner than we all think since time will start flying once it gets warm and we put those summer wheels on! And well it never hurts to ask.
Is anybody planning to autocross at waterfest this year in Englishtown? (This year it's on July 16th & 17th, 2011)
I have personally never done it so I will probably want to attend the autocross school and then maybe the event itself the next day. Still debating. Will need to setup something at work so I have the day off.
The dunlop tires I have for the summer are definitely grippy and I'm curious to see how the tiptronic will hold up against the competition ;)
Anybody?

I'm considering. I have a set of ps2s waiting for my new wheels. I've always wanted to auto cross.

def do the school. you wont need to go the second day cuz youll get enough runs in the first day. slap your car into tiptronic and it should shift at redline for you. if you get into 3rd or higher then youre doing something wrong. overinflate the tires a bit, take EVERYTHING out (including your spare if you want the weight reduction despite having more weight up front). its a ton of fun take some pics and post them after. please tell me that you have at least sport suspension.....

Im doing it this year as well. Check out their schedule, you have to go with a racing group theres several and iirc the earliest track day is april 13.
Heres an excert:
With few exceptions, owners of high-performance street cars dream of “seeing what she’ll do” on the track. Marque clubs such as the BMW Car Club of America and the Porsche Club of America provide many services for owners of these makes, including technical advice, discounts, insider info, and road trips and other fun gatherings.
With regard to the actual driving aspect, most of these kinds of car clubs also have protocols and procedures in place for its members to get on track. As you might imagine, Lime Rock is an extremely popular venue with these clubs!
Once you join a marque club that has track days for its members, you’ll have plenty of opportunity to sign up for one of its sanctioned club-days at Lime Rock Park. Most clubs charge $150 to $400 for those days.
In addition to the marque clubs, there are a variety of “drivers” organizations such as EMRA and SCDA (info below) whose very raison d’etre is to get its members on track in their street cars. As a member, you’ll know which day or days your club has rented Lime Rock, and like a marque club, you will pay something between $150 to $400 for those days.

I'd love to go to this, this year. What about insurance? Full coverage is fine? Also what do they require you to attach to the car? I know some tracks make you wire up certain things and/or remove them or switch out certain fluids. And are motorcycle helmets fine?

If you're talking about Lime Rock I'm not sure. If you're talking about waterfest, they have helmets there. I think if you crash...........sucks for you lol

you have to join a racing club, the more you join the more opportunities to utilize the track. Sign ups on C.A.R.T. http://www.cartct.com/membership.shtml
They reserve track time, theres even videos of them at limerock. Theres other associations as well you can join. They all have open memberships and typically race at parking lots, poconos, and limerock. I'm only really interested in Limerock as it is WAY local and is a beautiful course. Insurance isn't needed per-say. Its an "at your risk" sport and have waivers. I believe limerock requires a class before tracking as well. I dont remember but never-the-less its worth it.

yea sry i got back to u late, seems like everyone got back to you already. I usually go up with my bud's race spec mustang (fox body). Not the greatest looking car but fun as hell to drive and gets the job done. It's got race tranny, seats, roll cage, lots of motor work... But that's in a differnt class of racing haha. Im thinking of taking by b7 out on the track this summer. I mean hell i saw a guy with a volvo xc70 cross country doing it lol...

Umm i dont know the exact dates, as i was a tag along myself last year. I know that my buddy goes a few times a year so i end up going with him sometimes. However in the past year i met a new kid that works at High Speed Motorports. They race the green e36's at limerock, they are regulars so im trying to see what their schedule is like to tag along with them.

For those of you who have never autocrossed, I strongly recommend it! Fairly inexpensive, loads of fun, and you really get to push your car within safe limits.
While you can risk wrecking at the track, crashing at an autocross event is fairly difficult. Typically, they are held in very large parking lots or open areas of pavement with minimal obstacles to crash into (aside from cones, of course [:p])
I know many clubs will have loaner helmets you can use but having your own is always nice.
Happy cone chasing!

Auto-Xing is by far the most fun I've had with this car.

It is damn near impossible to wreck your car at an auto cross. The only thing you have to worry about is small orange cones, you aren't racing against anyone either. The first person will get half way through the course, then the next person goes. You are in first and second gear most the time, you might hit third once on a straight. It is totally worth it. It is pretty amazing coming into a 180° hair pin so fast that you have to heel toe into first gear, and you can feel your tires turn to mush underneath you. Best if you have fmic, but whatever.

02-10-2011, 08:26 AM
The fmic is a def help because your car will heatsoak like a bitch if u don't...as per wrecking shit....it def will speed the process up of any part that is on its way out...not to mention your tread life will drastically decrease, you may warp your breakpads, and if your a MT, it is definitely abuse on your clutch...basically any wear and tear parts...
As per the road racing....I took my car to limerock this summer for the first time with a MT car, and never put my car in first....I don't see why anyway would put their car in first gear on the track...I've even been road racing with a 2005 CL 600, and a ferrari 360- one auto, and one F1, and have never been in first...never been to the road race at WF so Idk

I've seen my brother autocross and it is definitely fun. The abuse the car will get during autocross will be like a week time of abuse in just a shorter period :P

Finally found it. I created a thread when I did my first Auto-X HERE (http://www.audizine.com/forum/showthread.php/383032-Did-my-first-Auto-X-last-Sunday-for-my-birthday....?highlight=birthday+auto-x) explaining how it went and pics and such. There is also a cool comparison list of all the times and the different types of cars and how they compared on the track. My best time was in the range of Mustang GTs, a corvette, and an older M3. The fastest cars were Miatas, RX7s and a Viper. It was about 95 deg that day, stock intercoolers, and lots of power loss, but still kept up with much more powerful cars.http://i217.photobucket.com/albums/cc243/viperdsa/DSC00567.jpg

The heat soak was bad. I probably lost 50 whp out there, three runs. I am pretty low on KW V1s, but honestly, they handled the body roll so well that I might have heard rubbing once during the whole day. I rub a lot with those wheels/tires on normal streets, but only on bumps. All those rediculous maneuvers didn't phase them. I was happily surprised at how well it did.

nah, its a lot of fun. I had a blast last year.

you need a helmet but they actually have loaners out there you can use. only other car prep making sure everything is in good working order (decent brake pad life, no excessive wheel bearing play etc.) and removing EVERYTHING that is not glued screwed or nailed down in the car. (don't want flying projectiles) theres room out there to dump your stuff... just remember to keep the valuables to a minimum so honest people stay honest.

your tires get pretty rough looking but they smooth back out on the trip home [up]
dont worry about doing bad, there was several first timers out there last year. It was my first time and i put away 2 B6 S4s with my lowly 1.8t [up]

I'm hoping to do control arm work and all that other crap before summer even hits. Hopefully everything works out as planned. Are you guys going to go to the autocross school or just the event itself
EErie B6
02-10-2011, 01:05 PM
i might do just the event itself. i did the school last year and it was fun. each day is a totally different track so if you sign up for both
1) you dont have an unfair advantage
2) you get 2 days of fun.
keep in mind, when you participate in an event be it morning or afternoon... it WILL take up the ENTIRE morning or afternoon... so dont have any other plans for that part of your day. you more or less are trapped over in the pit area till that particular session is over. also, dont be late because you have to cross the course to get to the pits... if you are late for your session its likely they will have it blocked off and you will be SOL.
I slept in last year thinking id have time to still check out everything else... the only part of WF i got to see was the Auto-X. This year i still want to participate but i want to check out the other parts too. (getting there when the gates open for once will also help...lol)

Is tracking separate or is it all included in one price?

It's 1 fee per day with entry fee to the park included. I thought it was like $85 for either event & if you sign up for both you get a discount on the second... $35 I think is what it cost me.
If you compare it to your local SCCA it's pricy... But it was still a good time and you get plenty of runs IIRC: the gave us like 12 each day. Plenty to make you feel guilty for beating on the car. Lol
