View Full Version : Disable Auto Wipers Speed?

Is there any way to disable the auto wipers? I can't stand the lack of control I have over my wiper speed. I think the auto detecting of rain is far to sensitive. I looked through the owners manual but didn't find anything. Perhaps a VAG-COM option to disable?

Auto is the first notch up, to de-activate auto or do a single wipe pull the wiper stalk down (towards the floor) all the way and release, the stalk should spring back up to position zero. When in Auto mode you can adjust the sensitivity by moving the thumb wheel on the wiper stalk towards you for less sensitivity.
3-Rapid wipe
2-Moderate wipe
1-Auto wipe
0-No wipe
-1-Single wipe

The way it works sometimes bothers me also... Too sensitive I agree, I wish I could set fixed time intervals regardless of how hard it rains.
And sorry for going a bit off topic, but my wipers get on my nerves making this very loud noise every time they switch direction. I just bought them a month ago. The previous ones did the same thing after I put them on. Why so many things have to be so complicated in these cars?

So is there no way to make the "1" setting work as an interval wiper??

That shit is madd annoying. It's barely snowing or raining and it's going crazyyyy on high speed.
i do it manually sometimes unless it snows or rains a lot.

I've noticed that after my windscreen change the characteristic/sensitivity of the rain sensor has changed.
When the original windscreen was on it, the sensor worked better. Less unnecessary wipes and not the crazy high speed for nothing.
So i guess that sometimes this is because of the mounting of the sensor to the windscreen.
But sure it would be nice with a mode which is not auto.

The AUTO setting in our care is the intermittent setting, it varies depending on vehicle speed and the amount of moisture that is on the windshield.
You can use vag com to adjust the sensitivity of the rain sensor itself.

Interesting. Anyone have a link to a vag-com DIY to adjust this?

I agree, I sometimes find the auto-mode very annoying. Especially now that we have snow, I can have very little-to-no water on the windshield, but at all dial positions in auto the wipers are in "crazy mode" and wipe faster than the normal fixed-speed setting. I originally thought something may be wrong, but I think it had to do with snow buildup near the sensor...

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one that thinks this thing sucks!
Mine works perfectly... snow/rain... Once I adjusted the setting on the wiper leaver to how I wanted it.
I've heard that if you adjust the sensitivity of the sensor via Vag, it will also mess with the auto headlight feature. Not sure if it is true, but that's what I heard.

The auto wipers absolutely drive me crazy. I hate the lack of control. My B5 has the adjustable intermittent wipers, which are so much better.

Bumping this. Anyone have VAG-COM fix for this. The sensitivity is driving me nuts.

It could because its not only the rain sensor but also the light sensor

BUMP- worst feature on my B7. Anyone have any new idea and/or vag info? Would love an old school intermittent setting!

You can change the sensitivity with vcds

Sorta. I went through all that a few months ago. I backed into the VCDS tweak but it doesn't do that much. At the end of the day, new wiper blades helped my problem a lot. If you aren't wiping clean over that rain sensor, it thinks its raining harder than it is.
See this thread to read what I found out about VCDS adaptions on that.

You can always remove the auto sensor. You'll need to replace the rear view mount and get a different rear view mirror. The connector might be different as well.
If you do it correctly, and sell your old rear view mirror, it shouldn't cost anything

I've been diagnosing my 2006 A4 B7 auto rain sensor not working. When toggling the wiper stalk to auto setting, I only get one wipe. Turned thumbwheel to see if this changes intermittent at all — same thing, one wipe. Installed a new gel pack, still no change, same.
After unplugging the small black three wire rain sensor, I hooked up a volt meter to see what is up and just happened to operate the intermittent wipers. Amazingly, the intermittent wiper functions as normal with the small three wire rain sensor unplugged! How cool is that?! I like easy fixes.

then your sensor is bad.

then your sensor is bad.Exactly. And I'm not spending $258.00 for a new one! Happy to have fully functioning normal intermittent wipers.

Probably get a second hand one for a lot cheaper, but yeah, its not a massive loss in functionality.
