View Full Version : Lower or new rims

I've been thinking about doing 1 of 2 things. The first would be to get a new set of coilovers/springs to lower the ride and close that wheel gap. The second option would be to get a new set of rims and tires. I've looked into some oem S5 rims and like them. Post any advice and thoughts about which one would be a better investment and if there are other rims you suggest.
[Edit] Since everyone has said lower (thanks for the input). Does anyone have any suggestions for which coilovers to look at. Something that won't have a big effect on comfort.
Here are some photos of the car as it is

I would post pictures but I don't have permission yet
so here's the basic car, same color, same rims, etc.

And you can post pictures. Just right click, copy and click "copy image URL" from the picture, not just the url from the top of the page.

Best,
Sean.

You guys are lucky to be able to lower your cars at the drop of a hat! I happen to live in an area of Georgia that still has plenty of unpaved roads. I regularly travel on gravel or dirt roads that are maintained rarely (if ever). So, for me, my quattro serves a different purpose that plowing through snow. In my land of pickups and jeeps, I stand out in my sedan. But, alas, I cannot lower without bottoming out everywhere.

Dang man, it sounds like you need to lift your car. Although not the best roads, I won't take our paved roads for granted.

Seriously. I have to pick my lines very carefully on many roads. But, that being said, I feel like a sort of superhero, and I rocket around town like a maniac, willfully thrusting past all the crappy redneck vehicles, and excessively luxury vehicles which are absolutely not made for anything but ideal asphalt.
Anyways, in my case, as lowering wasnt a feasible option, I went for rims.

Having put on larger wheels (went from stock 17's to Avus 18's) without lowering it, I say lower it first. I hate my wheel gap, and cannot wait to be able to afford to lower it. The reason I went with wheels first? I needed new tires and found someone selling wheels with brand new tires for less than I would have paid for tires alone.

Feelin' the same about our terrible roads out in Boston...adding to the fact that we just had another foot of snow dumped on us last night.
The DTM spoiler has been acting like a mini snow-plow. [mad]

always lower before wheels
like everyone else, lower it and then get wheels later.
you will be happy that way.

Thanks guys, it seems pretty unanimous. Any suggestions on a good set of coilovers? something that won't sacrifice a lot of comfort

What's your price range? The Stasis Streetsports are a good bang for the buck...improved ride comfort without being harsh (think "stock" but better), and they're at the lower end of the price range for coils (http://www.europaparts.com/stasis-street-sport-coilover-kit-a4-b6-b7-quattro.html). Also, KW V1's (I don't particularly like them), Vogtlands (which I have because I wanted to be different)

I think $1500 would be my max. Those Stasis Streetsports look legit, I'll look into them. Thanks

ST Coils.. They are a less expensive KW V1. Ride quality is really smooth. And like everyone else.. PANCAKE THAT BITCH!
