thoughts on lowering an a4 with just springs? im looking at the h&r, eibach, and b-g lowering springs for my 07 a4 quattro (base model). how will it affect the ride with the oem shocks? any other thoughts/opinions?

You'll blow your struts in no time with just the non-sline struts. If you have the money, get coils or just a spring/strut combo. Also, I'm sure you could just buy used s-line struts and run lowering springs on them.

i have a true S line vehicle what kinda modifications would i do to drop the car not too much but just enough to make it nice
^LOLOLOLOL. just get some "Race" springs. any company really. a few good ones are H&R, Eibach, or Neuspeed.

You just go off saying you'll blow your struts this and that bullshit, but have no proof of it whatsoever. There is a guy on here that's been running just springs on non-sline shocks for over 20,000 miles without a problem. Not only one person, but many.

you wont necessarily "blow" the shocks/struts, but the ride will be very very bouncy after a few thousand miles. its tough to do, but save up and get some coilovers. do it right the first time and you'll end up saving money in the end.

DO NOT GET JUST SPRINGS....most of us who have been around here for years have learned the hard way which means more $$$ out the window in the long run...I have coils, sway bars and control arms to give you an idea and even tho you may not need a suspension setup like that quite yet, def save yourself the trouble and do it properly. Either go struts and springs or full coil setup.

I have HRSprings that I put on last week over s-line struts and
It's a bit more bouncy than my stock setup was. I think I will end up putting some bilsteins on come spring time, I would just do it now but I just got a Stasis Exhaust and 034HFC which ate my budget for a couple months.

This has been discussed many times on here. Either way, you can just use aftermarket springs on your stock struts, and that may work for you. The general consensus is to just do it right the first time and spend the extra cash on some coilovers or a good spring/shock set up. If you already have the suspension out just do it right and you won't have to go back under there again. Do what you want. If you want a not so good ride and the possibility of swapping out the suspension again then go for it.

You will be ok buying a used Sline suspension and running springs. I have been running Sline shocks and Eibach springs for 30k and zero issues. I love the setup. It is quite comfortable, and a pretty decent drop.

okay i know this thread is 2 months old but does the Quattro model run different springs than the non-quattro model?

I vote for the Koni/Eibach FSD ProKit - I've been very happy with it, and it wasnt that expensive. [up]

I have had my H&R sport springs and stock non-sline shocks for almost 10k miles now. You can very easily run just springs. That being said I am now wanting to put some better shocks on ( its getting a little too bouncy) and have the full joy of tearing back into the suspension again. Long story short, just do the spring and shock combo at once so you don't have to do twice the work.

I ran Eibach springs with STOCK struts for 22k miles with no problems. Ride wasn't noticeable different than it is now with the Koni FSD. People will tell you all kinds of things, but its blown WAY out of proportion.
Bottom line, do what you can afford, either way you will be fine/happy.

Lol i was like this at one point, it was like this as i saved up money over time springs<springs/shocks<cheap coils<decent coils<air ride.... Oh no, i just broke my motor because some idiot mech. didnt do it correctly well, there goes all my savings and some....
But in all honesty dont cheap out one of the most important parts of the car, do it right, or dont do it at all. Dont mess around with something that could be potentially dangerous in the end.

Curious to know some more detailed impressions of going from stock shocks to aftermarket shocks with lowering springs. Is it worth all the work to do the shocks? How much of the bounciness does it correct?

From my experience just go with the best thing right off the bat. Like two years ago I bought springs and ended up spending like $800 after instals alignment and everything and ended up getting coilovers shortly after.. Just get coils to start off with but thats just my 2 cents.

I have sport struts with Eibach pro kit springs. 25,000+ miles later with no problems.
As I've told other people, if you dont drive like an ass and speed over speedbumps and potholes, you'll be fine.
Coilovers are overkill unless you're a track person. Yeah I said it.

This subject has come up a million times. If you run a search, you will find tons of opinions, but thats all they are is opinions.
Truth be told, different strokes for different folks. Some people swear by coilovers, others are fine with just springs. Just from my experience, i have owned a car with aftermarket strut/spring combo, one with stock struts and lowering springs, and my current car just got the coiolover treatment.
IMO you can buy a set of inexpensive coilovers (ST's or VMAXX are good for the money) for a few hundred bucks more than just the springs. Labour will be the same (or close) to just doing the springs and you have the height adjustability to play around with (or if you spend more money on coils you can adjust the dampening too).
Moral of the story is IT ALL DEPENDS ON BUDGET or what YOU really want out of your car. If ride comfort is important to you the springs alone will be too rough.

I wish I could give you a cookie. Seriously, no sarcasm intended! I have seen 1 thread on here that reported springs busting their shocks. 1 and only 1. Are coils better? Yes, do you NEED them to lower your car? NO!

If you don't mod your own car and need a shop for installs, get coils, otherwise do whatever you can afford.
Why do people always factor in install cost when giving advice, you wanna save money learn to work on your own car, it is not difficult.

So I guess the consensus is if you have S line its more of "go for it"
if this is true, what about the ultra sport package on a b6, same thing? i'm a total newb, so please be patient
