View Full Version : 2004 Audi A6 2.7T, Leaking cam adjustor seal?

5th Audi, but my first in the 2000's. Hope the purchase wasn't a big mistake. Purchased a very clean 2004 A6 2.7T with 57800 miles. Brought it to a local Audi dealer BEFORE THE PURCHASE and it was given a clean bill of health. Go figure, was driving it home (1 hour) pretty hard to get the feel of the car, and started smelling burning oil in the cabin. Seemed to have traced it down to the Cam adjustor seal (see pic and tell me if upper right corner of that image is the seal).

Kinda sucks, because the Audi dealer claimed to not see that during the inspection.

Anyhow, trying to suck it up now and deal with it. Given I am probably facing a timing belt service soon, should I do all the cam adjustor seals at the same time? Anything else they should do while they are in there?

Yes. T-belt kit w/tensioner, water pump, both valve cover gaskets, both cam plugs, and both cam adjuster gasket sets. Then you should be good on oil leaks for a while. Also, take a look at your coolant after run pump under the intake manifold. If it has pink crusty stuff all over it, then you may want to do that at the same time as well.

You can also do it yourself with the "DIY" links/threads that are floating around here on a day to day basis. Yes, the timing belt is also included in those DIY.

Here is a great list to familiarize yourself with: http://www.audiworld.com/tech/eng.html

But at the end of the day, it's your car and you can take it where ever you please [up]

IF you decide to take it to the dealership again, make sure they check everything this time.

55k on it? Still a baby and after that service you'll be good. Got an 04 a6 2.7t also and its still running strong with 116k on it. The major job was the TB...gotta do the cam seal soon though.

Might want to move this to the C5 section..
