View Full Version : Got new pads—should I turn, replace or leave rotors as is?

I have an 06 a4 with 46,000 miles or so and needed new pads. I bought Hawk HPS pads so far and read that I should have rotors turned or get new rotors, even thought I was told my disks were still ok. Should I just have them all (front and rear) replaced? Should I buy new fronts and just turn rears? What do you guys suggest? I don't do any hard driving or anything, just normal driving and not looking for any performance type of stuff.

And what do you think of Meyle for just standard blank rotors?

And how much does it usually cost to turn rotors btw? I've seen Meyle rotors for $100 set for front and $70 set for back. So depending on cost to turn rotors, should I just buy all new rotors?

Thanks for all the help.

replace rather than resurface, and with the inexpensive cost of new aftermarket rotors vs the cost of having the old ones machined (turned down), it makes more sense to replace. However, if your original rotor's braking surface looks like glass, and you can do a good visual inspection of each rotor, looking for tiny cracks and heat discoloration, and they check out well, you could certainly reuse your old rotors (especially with only 46k miles). You could also take it one step further and measure (micrometer) the thickness of the rotors and compare it to what they should have measured when new. If your rotors are questionable, I'd opt for a new drilled or slotted rotor as a replacement. They don't cost that much more than a stock rotor but they offer a big improvement in stopping power. especially in the rain. Shop around if you're going new, prices are all over the "map". Good luck, drive fast, stop fast. regards, Paul

Thanks for the info. I remember the guy checking my brakes said my rotors are still ok. So since they still ok, maybe I should just buy new fronts and machine rear rotors.
