View Full Version : Question for the 2.0 Gods (PVC Valve, oil in IC pipes)

OK,

So here is the deal, about 10K ago (at 90K) I changed the timing belt on the B7 & all the other stuff in there, rollers, tensioners, pulley's, etc. To get the job done, I had to remove the lower driver's side Innercooler pipe, to my surprise I ended up with about 2 quarts of oil on my garage floor. Car at the time had 90K and this was probably the first time the pipe has been removed.

I'm aware that these 2.0's have serious blow by and carbon build up, nothing like my B6's 1.8T, (I guess I'll wait and see on the B8???) I just had the BG service done and my dealer and the car is running amazingly better...

My question is this...I'm about to pull the PVC tomorrow, and I'm sure since my B7 is an 2006 it's probably the first edition of this part. Should I replace? Should I get an Oil catch can?

How do you test the PVC, is there a blowing or suction method? Is there a home-made DIY on how to bypass this thing? I've seen the catch can and the delete plate, but honestly, I don't really want to spend to much $$$'s on this one. This car will never see any engine mods, this one is the work horse and just gets driven a lot...

Thanks so much in advance for your comments and direction.
Tony

if your crankcase valve is defective it will make either a subtle audible vacuum leak at idle (hissing noise) or super annoyingly loud noise. in either case, typically the valve would be replaced. up until a couple months ago, if you had an E revision valve, that meant putting a brand new E revision valve on. it was the same design (hence same part number), and therefore, just as likely to fail. however, recently audi has released the newest revision i have seen: the P valve. i have upgraded several cars to the new valve and it has not caused any issues yet, in my experience. if you are having issues with the valve (audible vac leak, p2187, p2279, or oil leaks in boost pipes or from filler cap), i would recommend having it replaced with the L or P valve depending on your engine code. also, if you still have the original vacuum supply tube (black horseshoe shaped tubing) without the restriction, replace it with the updated version as well. both can be had for about 60 bucks plus install at the dealer and well worth it to avoid excessive oil ending up where you dont want it. i have seen some cars with catch cans, but i have no direct experience with how effective they are. a centrifugal catchcan like the one 034 offers would be ideal. you can also try switching oil brands to avoid oil vapors being recirculated into the intake and caking onto your valves. the bg induction service is really a good product and i personally stand by it, as it is waaaay cheaper and less invasive than a manual decarb, and with regular use (once every 2 years or every 15k miles), it can prevent and remove most if not all of the carbon deposits in your engine. best of luck and hope this helps. peace.

I have the 034 Vortex catch can on my B5 1.8T & I removed it 2 days ago, along with the racetec FMIC. In the past, ive had oil come out of the cold & hot side intercooler piping but when i did it the other day, I had probably the same amount of oil you did come out of my cold side piping. There was also around 1/2 pint give or take that came out the of the core itself. Like Kevin said, well everything he said above haha but look into getting the newest rev of the PCV valve.

how much did you pay for the BG service btw? I'm looking to get that done soon.

^^^^ Kevin & thenofjboy, Thank you kindly, this is EXACTLY what I need to know. Thank you so much. I will look into getting the new version of that valve. P and or E if they don't have the P. Install looks simple 3 screws, I'll have that baby on in 5 mins, as for the pipe are you referring to the plastic hose or is there another one. I haven't taken the cover off since the last oil change and Timing Belt change from when I did it 10K ago. As far as I know I don't have any hissing or sounds that I can recall. Tomorrow I plan to do oil changes, tire rotations on both the B7 & B6's, so i will look into tomorrow for sounds, I also VAG them at oil changes too to see if there are any underlying codes. Currently I have no CEL on the B7 and haven't thrown any codes since I got the car (78K) So all seems fine.

As for the BG service, I highly recommend. I paid $140.00 and it's about an hour and a half wait. I plan to do every 20K on both the B7 & B8, seeing as I bought the B7 used, I don't think the service was ever done, so I can only hope for the best; however, on my B8 I did get new and I will faithfully be doing that service every 20K. I plan to keep that baby for a long time.

Thanks again for your help and comments, you have eliminated my thoughts and questions of getting a catch can or delete plate. Again this is a daily driver and will just be driven normally.

Oh and thenofjboy, now I feel as if I'm not alone on having that much oil drop from the IC pipe, it was as if I was doing and oil change and forgot to put the oil catch pan under, holy crap, what a mess...

Sounds about right for the BG service, I was told that same regarding the price & amt of time is takes for the 3 step process. Was this the first time you did it on the B7? I wanted to get it done when I got the car a couple months ago....but..ill be getting it done now in a week or 2

you got a nice little collection of cars haha now you just need a B5!! What is mileage each? - thanks

Thank you so kindly, yes first time on the B7 as for BG service, the B8 will go in in 2K for the BG service. Yes, I get kidded all the time on my collection, some say get and S4 or RS4, trade in, etc. I love these cars.

B6 99270K
B7 100240K
B8 18260K
That all for now. BG service is due for B8 at 20K and all is good...

if you stay stock, dont listen to the guys up there on the part number for sure. give the old number on the part. there are 2 versions. i would do a BSH catchcan setup. recommend getting a new valvecover. they break from the faulty pcv and suction oil.

Thanks, I figured this out yesterday when I called the dealer for the part, the dealer wants 96 dollars, ECS some where around 35, go figure... as for the BSH I looked into that, I don't want to spend the $200 bux on that setup right now, (Have to do my clutch on my B6)

Lastly, is there a way to check for the valvecover? Would I just be looking for oil leaking or would I do the oil cap test? If it's difficult to remove??? Do you try to remove while engine is running or off?

TIA

the only way to check is pull it and check all the plastic channels under it. normally when the pcv valve goes, it does damage. creating oil consumption. just replace it. dont drop the bolts. they will fall out. when i worked at audi (08-09), i fixed alot of oil consumption cars with valvecover, crankcase valve, and breather hose. (when audi wanted me to do piston rings)
