I let my friend drive my a4 today, he ended up burying it into 3.5 ft of snow next to the interstate. While trying to rock the car back and forth from first gear to reverse i started to note a very bad smell. In addition white smoke was coming out from under the car. The car doesn't seem to be leaking any liquids, however, the clutch feels very different. Regularly my clutch feels soft and relaxed, now it feels tense and tight. The engage point has also moved close to me, the clutch will not engage until it is about 1-2 inches away from its depressed position. I let the car rest for four hours, when i came back it still smelt very bad, like something burning. The car ride home continued to smell like something had burnt.

Is this most likely the clutch going bad or something else?

Clutch. You can tell wear on a clutch by its engage point normally. Higher is worse..
