View Full Version : Do you have to remove the headlights for an HID install?

Hey Guys,

Im preparing to put in my DDM slim ballast kit this weekend. I have read a few of the DIYs on it, but was wondering if it is necessary to do any cutting and if you can do it without taking the entire headlight out? Also, if you do have to take it out do I need to take off the front bumper etc. Thanks

front headlight removal is not necessary, but it might make things easier. the only cutting you'd have to do is in the caps of each headlight to run all the wires. the bulbs come with a rubber seal that prevents moisture from getting in. I have to as though, are you putting HID's in your reflector housings? or do you have projectors?

Those are good questions...

Sadly, I'm going to say HID's in halogen housings...[headbang]

Wont that melt the housing? I'm no headlight expert, so I could be wrong

what's the difference... could you explain the two?

what's the difference... could you explain the two?

One has a projector, the other one just looks like a normal headlight you would see on a Ford or Chevy Caprice, etc.

If not for the all the nazi mod infractions I've been getting lately, I would rip your ass apart for asking that.

All I will say is, familiarize yourself with the SEARCH button.

projectors have a lens that focus's the light onto the road and not into other drivers eyes. Reflectors dont. If your car did not come with HID's from the factory, youre stuck with reflectors. I will tell you this: do not for the love of your mother put HID's in reflector housings. You will piss off every single car you drive by, because all that extra light is not being focused down the road, but reflected into their eyes. at the very least, pick up some depo's, yank the halos and install your HID kit into them.

It is treu with most headlights, but B7s have round housing, very similar to 03-04 maximas that came with stock HIDs without projectors. I have 35 DDM kit and it is not blinding when driving at night, had a friends drive my car and i drove his to test, and the best thing about those HIDs that they fully fit into the housing on the light, so no cutting or gluing required. There are lot of people on there who thinks it is OK to spend $1000 for new HID/headlight set up, I don't, so I went with $50 solution.

Go with whichever project that you want to invest the amount of money in. Plenty of people put hid in projectors or halogen housings
In the end its your name on the car not anyone elses

It's dead wrong for one thing. Also, I can't say anything in here without getting banned so just do what you want.

If you lived in Austin and I saw your scattered, far too bright lights in my review, I would get out and roundhouse kick you in the face.

I have to disagree. In the end it is NOT his name on the car, it's MY EYES getting blinded when his car is behind me. Sure plenty of people do it, but it doesn't mean its the right thing to to do.

OP, please get the proper housings. In the name of all things in good taste and consideration for fellow motorists and enthusiasts. From your mod list it looks like you value your car. Don't cheapen it with something that it not only cheesy, but unsafe for you and those driving around you.

It's amazing what you learn by spending a few minutes in here, eh?

HID in audi's round little halogens blind people less than SUVs or pickup trucks with factor halogens or factory HID systems
Now thats serious glare folks

but I agree, do try to use good taste, I think everyone have at some point put something hasty on their car only to regret it later and spend more money redoing it

The only thing I wish you kids would understand is this: If you can't afford to do it right, don't do it. Do enough searching and you can source OEM bi-xenon housings, kufatec harness, ballasts, and bulbs for > $900.
