OK, so I mixed up some oxalic acid crystals with boiling water and flushed my partially clogged heater core several times. Then I used sodium carbonate and boiling water to neutralize the flush. The oxalic acid dislodged a lot more stuff than the first 5 cycles using citric acid (Prestone flush). Interestingly, the sodium carbonate neutralizer also brought out a lot of crud--some really dark colored stuff. Then a bunch of back and forth plain water/compressed air flushes to mechanically dislodge more stuff.

It was about 20 degrees (F) this morning and my car was toasty warm. But I'm still not sure the core is really clean. If I set the temp control to max what air temperature should I expect to see at the vents? I know there's a spec for the air conditioner. Is there also one for the heater? I have a digital thermometer with a probe (handy in case the aliens set down in my back yard!) so making a measurement would be easy.
