Wondering if anyone could help me with an estimate of cost to replace a steering rack and tie rods on a 02 A4 quattro. I am looking at one that is posted on here, but was trying to figure the cost of the repair prior to getting too interested. Im not looking for exact figures....just a rough idea using a labor rate of 60.00hr.
Thanks

my b6 1.8t steering rack cost me about $8-900 at the dealer, and thats at an in company dealer giving me employee cost. i would say $1200 is about right for the rack if i didnt work for the company. tie rods around $100 for the parts, depending how stuck they are, $150-300 labor.

the rack usually comes with inners, you would put new outers on there (dont reuse the old) i am not at work and dont have the labor guide here, but the rack with parts, orings, and fluid is almost a grand, and labor i would GUESS is 6 hours? plus you need an alignment.

^ah this is true, i was totally thinking individually when i wrote that above. duh, brain fart. must be the snow. like he says rack comes with outers just buy inners. i can imagine labor to install inners to a brand new rack would be much unless the shops shady. but i did forget about the need for an alignement so about $100 for an alignment usually.

i had mine replaced 2 years ago. the dealer replaced it under my aftermarket warranty. OEM would have been 1100 new, but they used a refurbished rack that cost 450 and it has been perfect since it was replaced. tie rods were 250 including labor and alignment was 100. this was all at the dealership, so costs could be slightly lower at a good indy shop.

Thanks everyone, so I guess $1,800.00 Parts, labor, and alignment would be a safe bet.
