I have owned my 2007 A4 for three months. It has 27000 miles on it. 64 days ago my factory warranty expired. Last Friday as I was slowing to a stop when the engine stopped. I had the car towed and was told my cam chain broke (not the timing belt) which resulted in my camshaft stopping and my cylinders cracking. Long story short I'm being told I need a new engine to the tune of $7200. I called Audi North America and they agreed to eat 1/3 of the price so now I'm paying $4800. From what I'm being told this chain should never break and especially not with 27000 miles on it. I need some opinions here...am I just S.O.L or do I have recourse to go back to Audi for some factory default or something??!!

they do snap
but you was unlucky just after the warranty ran out
i would be back to audi for full costs coverd or at least 2/3
but at $4800 it is a good price fitted

My 3rd gear syncronizer went out in my 07 si and I was 4 thousand out of waranty, honda agreed to pay 75% of it... I would push a little harder to get more of it covered. Its worth a try anyways.

Well being a woman I used the standard negotiating skills (yelling and crying). I'm going back to Audi North America next week to see if I can get more out of them. I just cannot fathom how this could happen to a car with 27000 miles on it!? I do think getting a man involved in the process will also help my chances of getting them to pay more than the $2400. We shall see how that goes!

Yes the previous owner changed it every 3000 it was changed when I purchased it three months ago and it was also checked last month. Audi called back...1/3 is all they are going to give on this...so far. I'm not sure I'm done fighting the good fight just yet!!!

Wow. What a deal you are in. I am glad it didn't happen when you were broke!

It's a tough situation, it could be looked at from 3 sides.
From Audi side, it's a mechanical part, the car is out of warranty but low miles, not a common problem but still out of warranty, so they chip in to ease the pain.
From your side, it's a product defect, should not happen, Audi should man up and pay for the whole thing.
From a this side, should not happen but it did, either you pay for the whole thing or keep at it with Audi, can't hurt at this point.
Can you go to a different dealer and negotiate a better price from them (before Audi kicks in) or are you locked to use a certain dealer?
Have you tried your car insurance company (as some policies will pick up extensive mechanical failures)?

Definitely a tough situation. I'm impressed that Audi has agreed to pay 1/3 of the cost, even though this is rather cut and dry with the vehicle being out of warranty. I'm surprised that the chain would fail so early on, but these things happen. I work for John Deere, and we do these type of "policy repairs" from time to time. It shows that Audi is standing behind the products they manufacture. I agree, $4,800 for a new engine, installed, is a good price. You might be able to get the actual dealership to kick in some money as well. If not, you should still be happy that Audi is covering 1/3 of the repair.
