View Full Version : Eat Tires?

Does anybody else go through tires like underwear on their cars or am I just cursed and terrible at driving?
I just put new tires on a couple months back, 3k or so later, and I've already got signs of wear on the fronts in the middle, looking like I'll need a new set. I seriously switch tires every 10-15k it seems.
What the hell is wrong?

What size, brand and load rating?

Is your car lowered? Is your alignment right? Is the tire pressure right. Wear in the middle indicates that the tire is over-inflated. They usually can not get my alignment dialed in for the back, so I tend to go through those a little bit quicker.
Best regards,
Sean.

Falken ZE-912's this time around, from 512's.... maybe I need to buy more expensive tires.
When it was back in the day, I was on air-ride so I just accepted eating tires from retarded low heights, etc.
Now I'm stock. I swear I just had an alignment a few months back, and unless someone stole my car overnight to jump curbs, I should be good.
Tire pressure, I always stay around 35 ?

I have ran through 2 sets of Falken 912s in 2 years and I am done with them. I think they get bad wear due to a low load rating. I think they just barely meet the minimum load rating. My snows have a high rating and they last a long time. My next tire will have a high load rating and high tread wear.

I honestly never pay attention to load rating or tread wear, which just showcases my ignorance.
I guess you get what you pay for, but if paying $800 for a set of tires means they last 25k as opposed to 10, then fine.
Any suggestions or more explanation on theories? BTW, glad I see at least one person from back in the day still around here, I think this is the first time in over a year I posted.

Check your gas door, or the drivers side door and those will give you the specs for tire pressure. Wear in the middle guys has to do with over inflation. During winter on my 16 inch wheel, it is 32-33.

Discount tire gave me some nice discounts off my next set both times. Our cars are heavy and really put a lot of stress on the tires. I have had a few side wall bubbles with these and some under rated snows.
I think I am going to get some conti dws next.

Well I always aim for 35....
I'll drop them down to 33, though I don't really think over inflation is my problem. Anytime I ever check, I'm right around the pressures you mention. My tires are just shit maybe?

I was able to get 25k miles out of my last set of 912's with 35 psi all around. Both of my cars go through tires like nothing though and buying 2 sets of tires a year sucks.
Wear in the middle of the tire suggest over inflation, wear on the sides can be under inflation, or bad alignment, or lack of rotation.
My old jeep had 35" tires we use to have to do the chalk test to determine the proper pressure. Draw a line of chalk across the tires, drive a couple wheel revolutions, then see if the inside or out side rub off the chalk more. It should be even wear.

My dad has the Michillin hydro edge on his 2006 Passat. At 51k miles on the tires we just took them off to put his cooper st/2 weathermasters for the winter. but they have at least another year left on the all seasons.

Sean.

Cool, thanks for the suggestions, I'll check psi later tonight, and I guess schedule another alignment.
I'm stock because I'm selling the car.

I'm still game, it's retarded logic, I know.
But basically, car is up for sale and has been since August, and not too many calls. I'm not exactly up against the wall to sell, and if it doesn't sell by spring or so, I'll probably juts keep it. In the meantime, I figure if I do keep it, I'll try to be radical and change it so I'm going to start stock piling parts, and if it does sell, I'll sell them off, if not, come spring, I change.
It's piss poor logic, but he asked why it went to stock to begin with, and truth it was to sell it, but now that its seeming more like a distant dream, than a reality, I'm going to change it up and keep driving it.

that's not too ridiculous. i am hoarding parts as well. i figure, why change one thing at a time. i am going to do a radical change hopefully by the 1st quarter of next year. it looks like you are in a win-win situation. haha.
