Hey,

I'm looking at buying an A4, and I've been researching it quite a bit. I'd like to say I know quite a bit about them for not working on one before. My dad has a 2001 1.8T that I've been driving for about 7 months and I'm hooked; I need my own! Here's what I'm looking for: 1.8T... as new as possible but realistically 98-99, 5 speed, less than 100,000 miles, and costing no more than $8000. I'm not asking anyone to research a used one for me of course (unless you know somehow selling one [:)] ) but rather... is it possible to find something like this for $8000? What would you consider to be fair to get for $8000?

Thank in advance for your advice!

you could reasonably get something like that for $8k.

i.e. 98 w/ 80k miles.

Cool stuff.. Miles don't matter THAT much to me honestly - however this is my first car and I'd rather be putting money into some mods than into a sandtrap if you know what I mean.

My dad is the original owner of his 2001 A4 1.8T... besides Audi services until 50,000 miles, the car has had no maintainence other than oil changes at uneven intervals. It has 95,000 miles now and hasn't had a single problem.. just went into the shop for timing belt, water pump, 4 new rotors, new pads, new spark plugs. $1500, not bad for such a neglected car if you ask me.

So on a side note, if anyone knows of someone selling a 98-99ish car in the New England area, let me know; though I'm sure i'll find a better deal buying it off of someone who doesn't know much about Audis.

What do you think about this?

http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.jsp?car_id=177868812&dealer_id=38291821&car_year=1997&make=AUDI&distance=100&lang=&max_price=9000&model=A4&end_year=2006&min_price=1&certified=&address=01451&search_type=both&advanced=&start_year=1981&isp=y&cardist=38

Just curious - I'm aware the 1997 1.8T is only 150HP opposed to the 170HP of the 98-2001.. is this difference completely software? Will a chip bring this car up to 200HP just like a 98 does (with an APR chip for example).

I'm sorry, I'm sure this has been answered 100 times over but maybe someone could save my the trouble of searching on my awfully slow computer [:)]

Edit: My bad, it's an auto... what's with people and auto Audis... 5 speeds are practically nonexistant [:(] My horsepower question remains though... I'd consider a 1997 if the power could be evened up with an ECU upgrade.

On the 01, there's a "Sport" turbo...Either a K04 compressor housing, or the K04 compresser wheel...I forget which, either way, it doesn't matter.

With the normal K03 turbo (97-00), GIAC will give you ~197 HP

On the 01 you can make ~210 HP...Plus a little more on the X chip.

It's not a huge difference, but it's a difference.

I picked up my 1997 A4 1.8TQM with 122 for 7...And that's with a bunch of goodies...Plus the engine was replaced at ~80k by Audi, with a brand new one.

Well actaully its he 01s and up that have 170hp. The rest have 150hp.Yes the software is the dif, the chip will make up for it.

Well, yes the 01s and up have it, but he did post in the B5 section...You can't get a B6 for $8XXX

Also, software is not the difference...They have different turbos, and have different engine codes. Software will make up for much of what will be lost, but equally modded, the 01 will always be faster than say a 97

01, last year of the B5 with the 170 hp, not a bad option but out of his price range.

Haha... I know what you mean but the problem is his is a tip.. and it isn't even that the tip is that bad.. I could live with it (especially if he gave me the car for nothing).. but I'm not even 17 years old yet and this is my first car and I want to have a 5 speed... not only because it's more fun, but because I don't want to grow up being one of those *****s that drives and automatic Bimmer or something [:)] I did learn to drive a 5 speed on my brother's 1997 Saab 900SE with a mechanical clutch (ahhhh!) so I'm thinking I'll have more fun with an Audi

Edit: Is it only the 2001 that has 170HP? Does the 2000 as well? I'm looking at a 2000 for $8200.

By the way - just got my dad's car back with the new timing belt, water pump, spark plugs, rotors, and pads and all i can say is WOW. Such a difference. Car starts on one crank (3 before?) and stops on a dime. One of the pads was completely worn through the rubber or whatever to bare metal and all the others were at some stage of getting to that point. These brakes saved me from rear ending someone alone with ABS on the way home in this storm we're having now - it has snowed about 2" in an hour.

audi is one the cars that you can find in manual pretty easy.

Only the 01s have 170hp. Power is also be helped by the VVT in addition to the k03 "sport". I think there are also more chip program options offered for the newer DBW models.

What is the VVT? I am aware of the K03 sport turbos but I wasn't aware the 2001 had them... psyched about that! Regardless, I think i'll be pleased with some suspension lowered 1.5-2" and a chip..

So a 97-00 have 150HP stock... and 200HP chipped? Or is it less? It seems rediculous that a chip can add 50HP but I mean REDICULOUSLY AWESOME [:D]

VVT=Variable Valve Timing I believe...

97-00 look at around 200HP at the crank, with a chip and a new divertor valve.

Any luck yet? Are you firm on miles? I have a 2000 A4 1.8T with 145k, but I'd be willing to let it go very reasonably. The motor and tranny are in great shape, the timing belt, water pump, accessory belt, clutch have all been done recently. So PM me if you want more details. Otherwise, no worries and good luck!
