Maybe some kind of kill switch/anti-theft device that the previous owner put in? Take a picture of it.

I have it but my plug is missing, the plug is under the dash. I have a 2001 so is this something that was broken and replaced with an older one possibly? I was planning on making it a power panel with usb power ports and plugs.

Sorry guys for the mis information! Just before work, I noticed this "button" and decided to ask you guys on here. After you guys asked me for the pic, I went outside, took this pic, and tried to push the button. It won't move....it looks like a button at first glance, but its not. I have no fucking idea what it is. Sorry if I caused any loss of sleep or anything, I'll try to investigate things further before asking questions from now on. Once again sorry!

No! Don't! That's what holds the top of your car to the bottom, if you take it off the top half will fall off [:p]

Wow, that's a nice spot for an OBD hookup, I'd imagine. I suppose having it under the dash is some sort of standard, hence the move?

black99.5a4
12-05-2010, 05:15 PM
in america is standard to have it up front somewhere.. in europe, not sure of the year cut off or if they still put it there, but i guess its common there.

i'd say its easier for our cars to have it there due to how short the vag com and meastro cables are. it makes it difficult to drive with the laptop plugged when every shift your knee unplugs the cable.

Lol i dont like it. when i hook up my OBD scanner i dont like have to snake around to the back. plus, when it is up front it is easier to use the Vehicles operating features.

WHen I first took apart my center console I thought this nut was a button too.....but I pushed it, and quickly realized it was indeed....a nut.

12-06-2010, 10:42 AM
yea in usa has to be like 18 inches from the steering column starting in 1996. i'd love the port to be back there though, logging can be a pain with the cable sticking out by your shin

The European TDI I imported from Austria has the ODB port in the rear center console.

the stud is part of the floor pan, and its sprayed along with the pan at time of painting. the nut goes on later when the center console is installed and since its not painted, it makes the end of the stud look like a button. the "button" (stud) should be the same color as your exterior paint no matter what color your car is... unless its been resprayed.
