I drive with it down...always. That way I have a place to put my elbow while a I drive (cruise). Otherwise my neck/shoulder/back/arm will get tired of holding my arm up. Yes, I'm THAT lazy.

My brother (also a B5 A4) always drives with it up. He's got a 5-speed and says that it impedes his shifting. I didn't find it to be a problem, so I always lower it when I drive his car. Then he gets mad at me. He gets over it though, lol.

How do you operate the E brake, with the armrest down.
you have to like bend your elbow weird.

It's gotta be up, I don't like having to reach over it to get things in the passenger seat and it makes using the ebrake impossible. Shifting isn't exactly "ergonomic" either

Removed it because it empeded shifting..could care less about cupholders....in fact its better if noone brings anything to drink inside my car, they always spill shit everywhere.

I enforced the no food or drink policy after finding garbage hidden underneath my seats and cleaning crap out of tiny cracks and crevices.

One of my favorite things in this car is that I can keep the armrest down and drive. Its very comfortable, same as driving an automatic, I just have to move my fingers to change a gear. But I dont take my car to a track though

Around town and short trips UP. Longer trips on the highway with the CC set DOWN. It is harder to shift with it down...

Mines is always up. My seating is always set up for race, there is no lean in the back for the seat its fully forward and like the "wrist touching steering wheel" seat forward. Im a square like that :D. Oh and about it only effects short people, Im 6"2 and I hate the arm rest i just feel so relaxed and forced to shift slow. All that redbull I drank is going to waste!!!

I tried it both ways when I bought my A4 and prefer it down and this is a 5 speed manual. You have to re-train yourself because it is not really a natural position but no problems shifting or the e-mail but long arms probably help.

....exactly what I was thinking. I have long arms with big hands and shifting with my elbow on the armrest is much better for me. Also, I have to put a rubber band around the armrest for the rare times I have it up because it will open up if I hit a harsh bump in the road.

Up almost all the time, unless its a highway trip. It makes shifting so much more of a hassle, if I had auto I would have it down.

For a 5 speed if it doesn't get in your way when you drive then you must not have fore arms cuz that sucker gets in the way ALL the time.

So i drive with it up.
Cruise with it down when on the interstate and I don't shift much, it is comfy.

I don't know why, but I didnt the exact same thing. I drive with it down, but I voted up for some reason, then I realized it and felt really dumb.

On a side note, I'm amazed how strongly people feel about their armrest position haha

DOWN! I hate it up! Plus my lid latch is broken lol. I need a place to lean on and rest my arm while I shift. If you think it's annoying try driving a miata with a cup in the cup holder.............. ya...... your elbow is digging into your drink lol.

I suppose it matters how far back your seat is. For me I'm pretty short so I sit up close.

Down, but i have no console in there at all.

I'm 6'3" and need somewhere to lean. lol. I really hated having it down for a long time. But i just ended up getting sick of going up and down all the time and just learned to drive with it down. But every time i pulled the e-brake it just popped it up anyways.

walky_talky20
12-04-2010, 07:19 PM
Hmm. Just remembered that the only time I put it up is for rare multi-drink occasions or for snow drifting. You need unfettered e-brake access for the drifting. I also unplug a wheel speed sensor to shut off all the acronyms.

I drive with it all the way down. It does interfere when shifting but I've gotten used to it. And no it doesn't interfere with the e-brake whatsoever.

I used to drive with it in the lowest position, until it broke and got stuck in the upright position. I've been too lazy to look into fixing/replacing it.

The only time it comes close is if I yank the e-brake when I'm on a hill. Even then it barely is in the way.

Up for around town driving, for highway cruising in 5th then down. I drive with no shoes often on the highway chillen with my armrest down, head in the headrest chillaxin. No sense in trying to keep the boy racer facade up on a straight boring highway.
