Breather hose/tube

Can anyone explain how this part can fail? Symptoms? It looks like a simple tube...

only way it could fail is for it to get blocked cant see that tho
or it snaps

on my tt it snaped, and it look like some took a shit in that place.... [eek]
so i went to a ACE hardware and just got a thick hose, i can post a pic later when i get back home..
it costed me like 3 bucks to fix it![wrench]
