View Full Version : Confused: Engine, Trans Codes (96 or 97 or what)?

I replaced the bad transmission with a used one. Looked up trans code for the 1996 A4 2.8 quattro and found CJP.
Took old one out: was DRN

Is there more weird stuff going on?

VIN is:
WAUEA88D0TA209419

Engine Code (5th digit): A **> according to Haynes, there is only a D for 1996 (only 2.8 SOHC). A is used for 1997 2.8 SOHC

Model year code (10th digit): T = 1996

What gives? Do I have a 96 car with a 97 engine (AFC) and 97 trans (DRN)?

Any explanation, assumptions, theories?

Thanks.

Most likely not but it really wouldn't matter because it's all the same stuff.

So the CJP trans I bought and installed should work as replacement for the DRN that I took out?
What IS the difference?

And when I get parts, should I 'fake' the year (1997) to get the right parts for engine (AFC) and trans (DRN)?

I will look up the door panel built date and post later today.

If you order for a 96 then it should fit. If they do happen to be 97 parts installed then obviously they work lol. It would appear that the DRN is for the 97 but the CJP is for a 97 as well. I think the big difference here is that the DRN is probably the "tiptronic" which in reality is still the same transmission with a different computer lol. Just like an AHA vs ATQ 2.8l 30v the block is basically the exact same thing but the computer is different due to the DBW vs DBC throttle body.
