yes it has been done, and IIRC it almost bolts up perfectly. Email Markbradford or Steve Ag Arrow on AW. they are two individuals who I know have done this mod. Or just search.

Yes I did and it is a direct bolt in. Both use the same housing and the only thing you have to do is put your 1.8t tranny mounts onto the 2.8 gear box before you install it. The nice thing is that you gain mph in all gears not just the higher gears.

wait, why would you want to do this exactly??? for a few more mph in each gear? is that all or am i missing something here?

All the gears are taller, unless you have a sick setup you can do the 1/4 in 3rd gear. Which means your shift times will be less and higher trap speeds.

ok gotcha.... so with the existing tranny do we have to go into 4th gear for the 1/4 mile? sorry, not big on racing my audi since i know its slow

AB18

Yeah, 4th gear is almost a must. Get ko4 and run high boost some good software. That will keep ya busy.

had k04... blew the turbo and all my vacuum lines. im not going that route again. hence the reason i dont race my audi, its slow

haha, how much boost were u running? I manage to blew a motor with my ko4, that was a pretty penny to replace and cut into my mod fund.

it spiked somewhere around 22, got it up around 24 a few times. only had the thing for 7500 miles and it shit on me, too many miles to be covered under warranty which is sad consdierng thats only like 6 months of driving time

Who know what RPMs would be @70 in fifth? I'd like to see a lower rpms when cruising on the highway for a little better economy and less noise...

hmmm, so aside from the quicker acceleration, will this increase mpg!??

well u see..my syncros are going out in my 1.8T tranny..so i was gonna just swap a 2.8 in there if it fit because i heard they were better..plus i found one local for 500 bucks =P

Theoretically it should increase highway mileage at least... I'd say not enough to notice tho

I will check, IIRC it is about 1.4 mph for every 100 rpms or 14 mph for every 1000 rpms. I will check to see what the rpms while at 60 mph and 70 mph.

Remember, you will need more then just a tranny, the clutch will need to be changed too.

wait...y do i need a new clutch?

clouie

so what else would you need besides the clutch, a different flywheel?

When installing the 2.8 tranny you just use the 1.8t clutch you have or upgrade to a higher clamping clutch made for a 1.8t. Since the flywheel and clutch are mounted to the motor and not the gear box it only matters to make sure the correct one is used for the motor in your car not the gear box. I run a 2.8 box with one of the custom 1.8t clutchs I sell.

Cool mike, thats good news. Do think its as reliable as the 1.8t tranny? I think do this. It wouldnt hepl in auto cross tho i wouldnt think.

Taller gears could help in autocrossing as well. It means you could leave it in the same gear and not upshift as often. It could mean the difference between leaving it in 2nd gear, or shifting into 3rd. Of course, this means the car would not become unsettled (weight shifting) and more concentration on steering input instead of shifting.

Sorry if that doesn't make sense. It's probabaly a very bad explanation...

I know what you mean, but most tracks you stay in 2nd, and go into 3rd if they have a straight away.

Little more info.

5th gear

60 mph = 2600 rpm
70 mph = 3000 rpm
80 mph = 3400 rpm
90 mph = 3800 rpms

These tests were done with 235/45/17 Toyo RA1's.
Since my rev limiter is 7800 rpms this should top me out at 190 mph.

As you can see the 5th gear on the 2.8 trans has a gain of 10 mph per 400 rpms or 2.5 mph per 100 rpms.

Alright I am planning on buying a 00 1.8t and I have a 96 2.8Q sitting in need of major body repair. Will a 96 tranny work with a 00?

mike-2ptzero

If it is a 01A trans then it should work. Just not sure if the gear box in the 12v is the same as the 30v.
