View Full Version : The symptoms of a failing timing belt

are none at all.

on tuesday (after a heavy snow) i was driving to work. same thing as every other day: anywhere from 70 to 80 on the freeway, no redlining from stop light to stop light: nothing.

so i get to work, drive up the ramp to the upper level parking, and as i'm turning into my spot the car idles rough and dies. i coast in and stop. i try to turn it over: nothing.

i get it towed to the dealer and the timing belt is either off or stripped and i have "engine damage" they don't know what it is yet.

i'm still under audi assured warranty, so this isn't a rant or complaint, i just thought that when something that caused this much damage happened, it would be more dramatic.

i guess i'm lucky it didn't happen on the freeway.

find out if it was the tensioner itself or if the actual belt popped.

99 with 72,500. i know they go out around 70,000, but i had the warranty, so i wasn't that concerned. what's cool is AoA has record of me asking my dealer to check the timing belt about 3,000 miles ago. when i picked it up they said "everything was fine". they didn't even look at it, the bastids.

it's possible. everyone says they go between 65k and 80k, audi recommends they be changed at 105k.

it's a bitch of a job to change, too. search here and aw...there are some really good write ups about it, but you have to take the entire front of the car off. i got quotes from mechanics for anywhere from $900 to $1200.

i called a dealer out of state and asked if getting a chip would void my audi assured warranty. he said not always, because they would have to prove that the chip was directly responsible for the part's failure. when i said it was a timing belt, he said that because the rev limiter is removed with the chip, that could cause TB failure.

he also said that they have no reason to look at the ecu when they change a TB, so it's doubtful they'd ever know.

i'm just hoping everything works out.

hmmm... so is it worth getting him a chip? he wont see this thread so it doesnt matter, he cant get on the internet, hehe.

I didn't think anything timing related is covered under warranty because its maintenance related. its basically the responsibility of the owner to look after their car and maintain it.

atleast thats what my service rep told me.

He had the dealer "check" the timing belt less than 3000 miles ago. He did his part. Besides, the tensioner or even the waterpump could have caused the problem without warning. Its not always the belt.

yeah, I realized the dealer did check out the belt prior and said it was fine.

because of what i read on AZ about TB's, when i bought the car i specifically asked the dealer if a timing belt failure would be covered under warranty. he said, technically, they don't cover belts in the warranty, but they would cover any damage that was caused by a TB fail. and since part of an engine rebuild is replacing the TB, it's included. wierd. the problem audi has is that they list on their maintenance schedule that the TB is not to be replaced until 105,000 (on my MY). If they would issue a tech bulletin that changed that to 70,000, then i would be screwed as far as warranty goes. i don't know why they don't do this.

You can buy all the parts from ECS Tuning. That'll run you about $250. Then just find an Audi shop(not a dealer). They will usuallly charge around $300-$400. I got mine done for abot $500 all together. But I did mine at my VW dealership.

if they have the same exact vents... it'll work, otherwise it wont. i dont know what GTI vents look like, never been in one. i like the color of your car btw, jazz blue is really similar to nogaro blue.

I did mine in the shop that I run on closed day. Unfortantly, I doubt the owners would allow me to have other peoples cars in. I'll help you do it however.
