It was 24 here this morning haha. Sorry to hear about the water pump. Too early for that. Anyways, questions on the headlight and tailight tint, what method did you use? Thanks!
Its a lamin-x tint. They have it pre-cut for you, so application isnt too bad.

There is one, it's actually a sticky: http://www.audizine.com/forum/showthread.php/396326-Official-B8-S4-water-pump-support-group-therapy-session
If people didn't post separate threads for every broken water pump, I'd have nothing left to do![>_<]

I picked up my car after pump replacement today, failed 2 days ago on sunday, as posted above. Using some of the knowledge gained in this thread and others can improve how Audi handles these pump failures, given that they are unable/unwilling to do a full recall. When I stopped by the dealer to tell them the car was on its way on the flat-bed, I told the service manager I was aware of the failure rate of this part and frustrated that Audi had not recalled them. I asked that he check with Audi to see if they would approve a full car detail and engine spray. He was not very enthusiastic and said you can't/shouldn't spray the engine, but said he would check with them. I then called Audi of America Customer Service (not the Roadside number) and nicely explained that I wanted to see if they could approve the dealer to perform the wash/cleansing to avoid the coolant smell caused by my defective water pump bursting, as they and I knew it would. They said they were referring these water pump cases to a smaller group of service agents who would call me back.
Today, Audi called, approved the car detail, offered and did indeed give me Audicare to include services at 15k, 25k, 35k, and 45k (an $850 value, as I had not bought Audicare before). They then also filled my gas tank before pick-up.
Though definetely initially frustrated to have this failure happen when it may have been prevented, I think all in all Audi is taking significant steps to appease those of us who have the failure. I don't quite understand why they aren't warning us, but appreciate their service thereafter.
BTW, I also printed but did not use the 8 registered complaints I found on the US NHTSA website concerning waterpump failures for the 2010 S4. Several people, including some forum members, have registered complaints there.

I'm in Miami too, and my pump just went out. Luckily I was a few blocks from home when it happened. Which dealer did you have it fixed at? Hopefully mine can be fixed just as fast as yours. Going to get it flat bedded tomorrow morning.

So my water pump went kaput this morning. Car has 10,600 miles. I started to smell something like syrup, smelled pretty good too, and since it was morning, it just make me think of pancakes LOL. So Im stopped in front of my buddies house to pick him up, and I see some smoke coming from the side of the car. I didnt think anything of it, I thought it was some dust from the freshly cut grass. Then, we drive away, and I get the coolant light and to turn of the engine to check the level. We stop at the nearest gas station, and I pop the hood and there was coolant everywhere in the engine bay. Got the car towed to my dealership and waiting to see what they say. Hopefully it wont be too long until I get it back. Also, it was pretty cold last night, I think it got down to the 40s or so. This morning was in the 50s. I read that it could be cold related if the car is in such weather for long enough. Anyways, here are some pics of the car that have absolutely nothing to do with the water pump.

I called Audi customer relations and complained about how poor their Audi roadside service was.(waited 1hr and 50 mins). Also told them that I felt that it was irresponsible for Audi to know about the problem, change the defective part in production, and not have a recall. Also told them that I felt it was irresponsible knowing the paert will eventually fail with the potential to strand their owners in potentially dangerous situations and locations. Audi representative compensated my by paying 1 month lease payment(over $700). It was unsolicited by me but gladly accepted.
Same story here .
Before it happen ,I called and emailed AoA twice expressing concerns about the water pump .
The anwer was always the same "your car is safe to drive " but if anything happen please call us
I was smelling coolant from time to time and it's why I was asking to have the pump replaced .
WP went out the day before thanksgiving when I was 450 miles away from home .
Of course, I called AoA while waiting to be towed .
I am sure AoA called the dealer before I got there ,they were outstanding in any aspect .
Audi dealer gave me a loaner for 3 days (I did not want to wait for my car but repair was done in 3 hours) .
When I picked up my car ,the gas tank was full and the car was detail like never before and of course WP changed .
I talked with a AoA representative about this issue knowed by Audi and the risk they are taking .....dangerous locations like freeway specialy with kids .
I was not expecting anything other then" we are sorry" but he offer me 1 month lease payment as compensation.
Because, I own the car, they send me a check of $790 .Just got it today .
AoA told me they have a crew of 3 people working on the WP ptoblem and they do not do a recall because they do not have enough in stock and problem should be solve soon .
My guess now is, if you have to travel far from home ,call AoA and ask to have your WP change before ,they might be do an exeption .

So my water Pump gave out thursday... and this afternoon (Monday) they called saying my car was ready, So i went and picked it up. Car was driving fine and whatever but when i got home, i popped the hood and noticed that my coolant level was about 6 inches below minimum. I though it was strange but didn't panic, told my self i would call my dealer tomorrow to ask about this. Ok well i put my car in the garage and later on that night
(car was in the garage for about 4 hours) i wanted to go out for a little drive. Well while backing up my car i noticed a puddle on the floor. I went to check it out and it was orange looking and looked like my coolant was leaking again..... mind that i had the car for about 6 hours and drove 45 min of that time. Im calling the dealer tomorrow to find out what this is. In the mean while im here home wanting to kill the mechanic who worked on my car...

Had an appointment to update my DSG transmission because I have had a few instances where my transmission would for a split second be stuck in neutral when it should be upshifting, and a few other minor problems. So I start my trip to the dealership and as soon as I get out of my driveway I get the check coolant level warning. You guessed it, waterpump dead. So it looks like it was perfect timing otherwise I would be so pissed as it is freezing outside and with the cold weather the tow trucks are really busy.
They need really to recall this crap before someone freezes to death in the middle of nowhere.
I guess on the brightside car thieves will not be stealing our vehicles in the winter time.

I have 18K miles, 10 month old S4. My pump blew out and puked up all the coolant last night on my way home from work, an hour away from home - a big ugly surprise to me since I hadnt read this sticky yet. Waited over 90 minutes for the flatbed in the 20F chill. Did the night drop off and the dealer had it fixed by about 2pm today - guess they are stocking the new waterpump design now- hah. Funny the dealer told me they topped off my gas tank but I had just filled it up about 1 mile before the coolant light came on, so they really havent done anything for me other than fix it fast. After this and the brakes just starting to squeal I'm kind of disillusioned with Audi but hopefully that feeling goes away once I start driving the S4 again.

Another one bit the dust on my S4 last night as well, fortunately within a few blocks of my house. I had read the threads regarding the water pump but thought "nah-won't happen to me, right!". Been in the shop today, not sure when it will be finished.
Recall time indeed! Doesn't Audi read these threads?

10 months and 14363kms later I'm sitting in a parking lot waiting for the tow truck! Oddly enough I kind of thought it would fail today. I think I felt it fail. I was accelerating from a stand still, and it felt and sounded like it lost power, then regained it. I then started to smell coolant, and hoped it was the old honda in front of me. That's when I noticed the smoke! I'm just happy my wife didn't take it to work today.

i drove the car a mile from my house to a friends. Parked and notice some smoke coming from the lights. smelled coolant, popped the trunk and coolant lvl low with jus alil coolant on the bottom of the engine. Called AoA sent out a tow within 20 mins perfect time for me and friends to hit a joint [o_o]and watch MNF on my iphone. it was slightly rainin and 50*F not that cold compare to you others. lucky for the tow truck guy i could start my car with no problem(not even a warning light) and drove up the flatbed for him. Called dealership and told them to stay open for me as it was 6pm and they close at 6pm. they told me in the beginning that there was no loaners, but then i persistent about it, get a call back in 5 mins saying that got a 2010 Q7 for me. dropped the car off at 630pm and in a Q7 by 6:35. Not so bad experience as some of you, but im glad it wasn't on the freeway or on a snowboard trip. Im still going to call AoA and complain and hopefully try to push them for a month's payment [:D]
oh BTW does anyone know if they are going to erase the VAG codes?? i ask them not to and they said ok.. but i think the service lade just wanted to go home. she said it mite b out 2m, but no rush im loving this Q7

So i got off the phone with AoA and they are offering me Audi Care Plan. i refused and ask for a reimbursed monthly payment of $845. i didnt want audi care plan because its been almost a year and i only have 7400 mi. My last car i had for exactly 5 years and i only had 29k on it so i do not drive much and i figured ill be doing my own maintenance and different intervals from time to time until i really need to bring it in(i.e. 35,000mi). Also some of the shit they perform is pretty useless and im not really sure if the dealership really does it. Audi Care is priced at $850 on the website. Did i go the right way???

Absolutely. Cash is king - after you get the $845, you can do whatever you want with it instead of being tied to a program that you probably won't be able to take much advantage of especially your car is still under full warranty.

They originally offered to reimburse me for my Audi Care .It was unsolicited on my part. I told them that the dealer threw in the Audicare for free. Rep then offered to pay 1 month lease payment($720) and I accepted. I never expected compensation but here is what I said to them. First of all, I complained about the low class, low budget towing company. Secondly, I was stranded out on the road and told them that waiting almost 2 hrs for the flat bed truck to arrive was very poor service. But mainly, I express that I felt it was grossly irresponsible on the part of Audi, to know that the part is bad, change to a different part in current production, and not have a recall. I told them that Audi has disrespected the owners by ignoring the problem and leaving owners stranded and inconvenience in potentially dangerous situations. Since the car is not really drivable for long after the WP blows, owners could be left stranded out in the boondocks, in a bad urban area, or on an dangerous intersection or bridge. The WPs fail many times without warning. Just think what might have happened to you if this occurred after hours, on a weekend or on a trip. NOT GOOD.

Its funny when I called AoA during work. Lol I didn't know how to approach them. I just told them was dissappointed my water pump was a known issue and I kinda exaggerated my experience. I told them I was stuck in the rain freezing and had an appointment I missed. I told them it was a safety issue and they just kept apologizing and it was ackward because they didnt offer anything. So I got straight to the point, I told them my friends have the same problems and they were compensated. He wrote me a case number and I called a day later and they offer me Audi care but I took payment. Quite satisfied because my experience was not bad at all.

So.......my water pump goes 2 days ago. I am starting a new job and have to go Oklahoma the day after christmas. Customer service was excellent at Audi North Houston, had my car back the very next day w/ a free tank of gas! I even wrote AoA and scolded them for the whole damn water pump issue, but praised Audi of North Houstons quick and friendly service. Then today (Christmas eve, mind you) I am cruising around town and my car overheats! I pop the hood and the coolant is bubbling, nice. I catch the last of the Audi folks leaving for the day (service dept. is closed) and tell them to wait, because i got a supercharged $55k paper weight coming to them. I now get to drive a loaner A4 (that smells like an old lady) w/ no navigation. I know it isnt a big deal but i payed a good deal of money for that convenience. So the plan is to fix(not fix) my car and ship it to Oklahoma, where i will be staying. what a mess. I thought it made more sense to call someone in and give them some premium pay to fix my car. After this, i cant ever see myself buying another Audi. which is sad because i love this car, but i will always be waiting for it to break down again.

You should have scolded at your dealership as well. Customer service may have been nice, but the work is not. Did you verify that the pump was indeed replaced by the new all aluminum pump or did they throw in another plastic pump? If they did install the aluminum, did they do the appropriate bleed and test drive of the car for at least 20 miles to make sure that the coolant is circulating normally. I think the blame is both AoA and quality of workmanship of your service center.
Sorry and I hope you don't leave the Audi brand because of this. When you get your car back, make sure that your waterpump is all aluminum. Pop the engine cover and you can see it with your own eye.

I haven't heard of the new pumps failing, and those that did were improperly installed. My dealer said that they needed to drive the car for some time to let the coolant circulate and then take it back to the shop to verify everything. They can't just swap and return it to the customer right away.
new pumps are failing too, audi tech friend told me they've had 2 2011 cars their with failed pump housings. i don't think they're failing as much as plastic ones, but they are still failing

Before everyone starts condemning the new metal water pumps my dealer has had two S4s that had the water pump fail and then start overheating after because the plastic thermostat failed too. We like to keep the cars for a day after replacing the water pumps to make sure everything is okay.

I have a 2010 model, this happened at approximately 7,500 miles.
Mine went last Thursday, December 23. My wife was driving the car that day to work when it happened. As I wasn't around when this happened, she told me that the coolant low indicator was on and that the temp level reached 3/4. She reached work which was about 18 miles!
I called my dealer and they said it was likely the water pump. I asked them what to do. They indicated that I should take water with me to add and bring the car in. I did that, I had to add 1 gallon of water. I then drove it back to the dealer which was approximately 10 miles.
A couple of questions
1. Should I be worried about damage to the engine if my wife drove it that distance?
2. Was I advised wrong by the dealer to drive the car to them?
I'm worried now as I wasn't aware that there was a water pump issue on this vehicle.

standard protocol would be to pull over when light comes on dash and call roadside assistance.

Mine went this morning - 7200 miles. I was pulling into a parking lot for coffee (lucky timing) and the warning came on. I immediately turned off the car and that was it. The reason I say lucky timing is that I was able to immediately turn off the car. I called roadside assistance and left the f*cker there in the parking lot. It's in God's hands now.

In the interest of providing a data point, I called my dealer today (Rector Motors, Bay Area) and was urged by the service advisor to come in so he could take a look (he actually said, "come in unless you want that thing blowing up on the highway," so my guess is they've seen a few of these). Being the dummy that I am, I wasn't sure if I had the plastic or metal version, but after their inspection, I do have the aluminum version. My build date is 3/10 (took delivery in late April) and my VIN is just over 144000. Not sure what they would have done if I had the plastic one, but this dealer at least seemed to be well aware of the issue. Hopefully a promising sign. Good luck to every one out there.

I have become a victim of a failed water pump! Cars is sitting outside the dealer lot now waiting to be let in on Monday morning. You guys know if I can add coolant and drive it home? I'm approx 2kms from my dealer and don't like it being left outside over the weekend. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Hi guys, just had the dreaded water pump failure! Car has been towed to the dealer but will remain outside the gates over the weekend. I live approx. 2kms away from the dealer. Would I cause any damage if I filled the coolant back up to at least the min. level and drove it back home until the dealer re-opens on Monday? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance and Happy New Year to all!

It came 3 weeks after i fitted the revised thermostat which came in to our local AD during 1st week of dec. i travelled abt 1500km during these 3 weeks before the pump broke..The revised alumiunum water pump isnt that sturdy apparently.. still waiting answer on the cause..

Wow, I am fully back on the Audi bandwagon. I called AoA after my failed pump experience to let them know what I thought about their response to a known design flaw. The guy on the phone was apologetic, but wouldn't offer any solution only asked what I wanted to make it right. I said I hadn't thought that far, and he said someone would call me in a few days when they complete the documentation from my dealer and can ofer a solution to make me happy. I got a call today (3 days later) and was explained the entire situation (which I already knew aout thanks to this forum) and was told that Audi will be mailing out a package to everyone affected by this problem. As part of this package, the standard reparation will be for Audi to extend the factory powertrain warranty to 5 years/ 100,000 miles. I was very pleased to hear this since I purchased this car assuming I would keep it around 4-6 years untill the next generation came out and problems were already fixed. In addition they asked what else I would like to redeem my faith in Audi. I mentioned that I heard several people with the same problem had received free Audicare or were reimberssed for a months payment. I was immediately offered a payment reimbersment since I already have Audicare! All I had to do is send them a statment for my loan to show the payment amount, and they will send me a check within 3-6 weeks! I was extremely impressed with Audi's customer service in this situation. After hearing about BMW's HFHP problem that they failed to fix or acknowledge, I was very impressed that Audi was instantly willing to do whatever I wanted to restore my faith in them. My hour and a half waiting in freezing cold temps on the side of a highway is completely appeased by this, and I can continue to love my car without any reservations.

The beauty of the way Audi is handling the water pump issue; I call the dealer 3 weeks ago conversation goes like this. We both know it is a matter of time. Please replace my water pump, dealer is sympathetic "would love to but Audi says I can't", great.... Get back to O'Hare last after a week in London, driving back to Milwaukee 6:30 pm, 3 hours of sleep the night before (late night but that's another story), boom water pump goes on the interstate. 2.5 hours later the flat bed, S4 and I arrive at the dealer in Milwaukee 10pm been up 20 hours on almost no sleep...... Makes my wonder why I have 3 Audis!

So i took my car into the dealership because of the whistling noise at idle and they replaced another metal WP. They told me that the bearing was loose or something in the WP. I kept telling them maybe they install it wrong and she didn't give a solid answer. i asked her if it was the same tech that did the reinstall and she said yes. I told them to throw in a 15k maintenance but only got a 10k oil change and tire rotation. I will be calling AoA tomorrow trying to juice them for audi care now since they gave me a month's payment a week ago when my first WP fail. Now i am on my 3rd WP and if this one fails, i will be researching CA's lemon law.

Mine went last Thursday. Luckily I was in a good place - the local mall. The closest dealer is 220 miles away, and I expressed displeasure that I would have to go get it when the repair was complete. It turns out I won't - I asked to be "reunited with my vehicle" - and because it is the water pump issue, they will flatbead it back to my house - no charge. I'll get it back tomorrow.

Even after I complained twice in October to the dealership and twice to AoA about how my car's VIN was on the RVU (8/09 build date) - they refused to perform the water pump exchange. To no one's surprise, the pump failed at 12411 miles. Waited 70 minutes in 22F temp for roadside assistance. I have to say the towing and dealership experience were great, but I am so furious about this issue that could have been resolved months ago without any headaches. Now I have a car that stinks like burning coolant. Called AoA today - they are supposed to call back by Friday with a compensation offer.
Way to go, Audi.

Been reading this sad and really long thread. Don't own an S4, yet. Been looking at them. The lack of a recall here is really BS, but I see the perspective of 50 failures on this board and obviously some others not on the board, which is probably not a huge percentage of S4s. Anyone have the B8 S4 production numbers? Regardless, AOA obviously recognizes an issue, but doesn't think they are ever going to get sued for it (not a safety issue). So they have no incentive to issue the recall - and will continue to only kiss your butt when it fails.
Other question, has anyone simply replaced the pump? How much does it cost? Heck for $200, it would be worth the peace of mind. Also, with recent dealer experience, I would suggest a slightly different approach. AOA will simply not replace your pump - you need to complain about it. Now if you are incredibly lucky, maybe your service advisor will suggest that they noticed a "leak" and replaced it. But you can also mention that you've added coolant or that you've noticed drips on your garage floor or the whining noise. Not suggesting anyone lie. Your service advisor will be happy to address customer complaints...

Low coolant warning today by no other problems (no overheating, etc...). Stopped immediately & checked it, yep, very low & could smell coolant. Took it to Momentum Audi & they confirmed my suspicions that it was the water pump (plus mentioned thermostat) and insisted that they keep & fix it. They couldn't have been nicer, in & out with loaner at 3:30 PM on a Saturday & their service department closes at 4:00. 11,068 miles on 2010 S4 in Houston, TX and we just got hit by 28-30 deg F cold front. A girl & her dad were standing in the service area, her Q5 had the same warning light come on & it sounded like it was the same issue. Drove home in B7 A4 and instantly missed my S4. Wow, what a difference! Oh well, hopefully I'll get it back early next week & that will make me appreciate it that much more!
Edit: Picked my car up Monday afternoon, all is well. It will be interesting to see whether AoA contacts me and how they present the matter.

Mine blew around 10K miles. I live in Boston. It was cold that morning - single digits. I started the car and heard a flapping noise. I ignored it and drove to get coffee. When the car warmed up, the flapping noise went away so I started out to my destination. About 5 miles down the road, the coolant warning light came on to shut down the engine. I pulled off the highway and turned off the engine. There was smoke coming from the engine compartment and the inside was wet. I called AAA and they towed the car to Burlington Audi. I was out in 15 mins with a loaner and on my way. The car was fixed that day. [Thank you Audi Burlington!]
After researching the problem, I learned that many others are having a similar experience. The service manager did offer to detail my car and award me the extended service contract but I had already had one. He said that Audi would be contacting me but 2-3 weeks later, it hasn't happened.
Count me among those that are upset that Audi is not fixing this before it happens. It doesn't have to be a public recall but a simple call from my dealership asking me to come in so they can fix a potentially faulty part.

They do not have enough WPs in inventory to issue a recall right now. Therefore they are doing it on a failure basis. Call AOA and ask for compensation for your WP misery. Normal compensation is the value of Audi care. They sent me a check for that amount as I already had Audi care.

Then you are fortunate. I asked that same question back in Nov '10 at University Audi and they said they could not replace my WP until it failed. Clearly they have more inventory of WPs now and can make more progressive replacements. By the way, my water pump (WP) failed in mid December '10. It was fixed by University Audi with new WP.
Make sure you now have a 06E-121-018-A WP on your paperwork. That is the new one.

Add me to the list! 2010 S4 at 13,509 miles. Driving home from work last Thursday night when the low coolant level light came on with no warning symptoms or signs. Pulled over immediately, coolant resevoir empty and telltale puddle on the ground. I had asked my dealer's service dept (Audi Stratham, NH) twice before about a preemptive metal pump replacement but they were unable to comply. Also asked AoA about that with no luck. They could have saved themselves a lot of money and saved me a log of aggrevation. The roadside assistance was pretty good. Got a flatbed tow truck within 20 minutes that took my car and my wife and me to the most convenient (not closest) dealer for us (Bernardi Audi, Wellsely, MA). They kept their service dept open late to accept the car and provide us a loaner Q5 (which we rather liked). The pump was replaced the next day, they did my state inspection for free, and they drove my car to the hospital where I work (24 miles from dealership) to swap for the loaner. The tow operater did manage to scatch the otherwise pristine bumper prying off the tow hook cover.
So the response to the event was overall very positive, but the fact that the whole thing was totally avoidable remains pretty much unforgivable. I love the car but Audi hasn't shown loyalty to customers that warrants customer loyalty in return. Not sure what I'll do when the warranty runs out....

~22k miles. Delivery date was 10/09. Went out this morning on the way to work. No signs or symptoms other than high engine temp and light warning me to turn off engine and check coolant level. Coolant wasn't full, but was still above min line, so I let engine cool a little and drove it the 2-3 miles to the dealership. It started overheating again about 1/2 mile away. Dealer just called to confirm it is the water pump, part is in place and will be replaced today. They are detailing my car and giving me a free tank of gas while its there. We have an extra car, so I didnt need a loaner. Sounds like I was lucky mine made it this long (perhaps because I live in a warmer climate?). Dealer also told me that there was RECALL LETTER MAILED out in the last couple days that will probably be waiting for me when I get home.

Tow it to the dealership. If you have a water pump that fails while driving, and leaves you at the side of the road, you then get a lifetime Audi warranty on your transmission, as long as the car was towed to the dealer

Sure it wasn't the thermostat? Several people have reported failures awhile after the pump change. Very similar symptoms as it does cause coolant to leak.

Contact Audi or speak to your service manager. I am an Audi tech, and I know for a fact that if you have to have your car towed to a dealership because of water pump failure, you are entitled to a transmission lifetime warranty, it is not transferable if you were to sell your car, but its still worth making sure you have, because you are definitely entitled to it.

The original pumps are plastic, and leaked coolant. The updated style are an Aluminum housing, and i have not come across and Aluminum housing pump leak. There is a possibility that the first time your pump was changed a new plastic one was installed.
You say your water pump went bad, but does that mean you had a coolant leak for the second time, or was it that your car was overheating? If the complaint was your car would overheat, the more than likely cause would be a thermostat, which got hot the first time you car leaked coolant, and is now starting to stick closed. Find out more details from your dealer, because I wouldnt think a second pump, especially if it was Aluminum, would leak, or cause problems.

Any transmission, but it only applies to vehicles which have the plastic style pumps installed, which is on 3.0T, 3.2, and I think some Q7 TDI engines. They are currently sending out letters recalling cars to the dealership to replace the pump before they fail, so it shouldnt be long before they are all taken care of.

What does the transmission have to do with the water pump? Sounds like an April fool's joke to me! Most I've heard is people getting Audi Care after the failure or a month's lease payment.

its not an April fool, and if you were to contact Audi, you would find that I am correct. What does a months lease payment have to do with the water pump? Nothing, it is a gesture from Audi to the customer for the trouble, just like a lifetime transmission Warranty. If anyone talks to their dealer, and they tell them there is no lifetime warranty on Transmissions, PM me, and I can send you the Audi letter which states exactly what I have just said.
Please be careful, there are certain conditions which qualify you for this, not everyone who has a failed water pump, automatically gets a lifetime warranty on their trans. It only applies to customers who were left broken down at the side of the road, and had to have their car towed.
Like I said, contact Audi or your dealer, and see for yourself. This is no April Fools.

Mine failed in early March at 13,509 miles. I wrote a letter to customer service and heard nothing after several weeks so I called them and was told that a customer service rep would get in touch with me. She called today and confirmed the warranty extension (power train only) to 5 years / 100,000 miles. I once again expressed my disappointment with the way that AoA has dealt with the problem; not proactively informing S4 owners about the situation and their steps to address it. However, I am satisfied with the warranty extension particularly since I didn't buy an extended warranty when I negotiated the deal on the car. She provided no information of the kind that I got from this forum (i.e. RVU 19H1) and said only that they had learned that "some" of their customers had informed them of the pump issue. I pointed out that the audizine poll shows a 45% failure rate of responding members, which is a large "some".

Here's my saga. My first pump was relpaced in October 2010 after 15,000 miles. The 2nd was replaced at around 20,000 miles when it started leaking. The third was replaced when I found a huge coolant puddle in my driveway at 23,000 miles. So far, the 4th pump has help up OK for the last 2,000 miles. After some significant discussions with Audi of America, they are sending me a check for $1,200 which is the cost of Extended Audi Care and I got the warranty extended to the same 50,000 miles-5 years that everyone else got. Very frustrating...

Hey Guys, i am approaching my freee 5K mile oil change from AUdi. During my 5K miles on my car, the water level in the resevoir dropped from Max to Min at around the 2500 mile mark and i topped off the fluid. Now that i'm approaching the 5K mile mark, the water level has gone down to the MIN level again. Is this normal consumption for the coolant or should i be more concerned?

Do you have a metal waterpump? Bring this coolant consumption to your service advisor's attention for proper diagnoses at 5K service... There are three main areas we have seen coolant leaks from. 1) waterpump, 2) coolant hoses, and 3) IC radiator. On 3) the IC radiator is susceptible to rock hits. Psychotic had a pinhole leak in one of his coolant hoses. DrGP just had a hole in his IC radiator. Many of us including me have had waterpump failures.

My car came with a metal water pump and i have not received any notices about thermostat issues. A few months ago i did the NWS4guy DIY grill mesh to protect my IC. Guess when i bring in my car for 5K service i'll tell the service advisor to take special note of my coolant levels.

What a great car company, I mean this. First, Audi finds out about problem, then they completely redesign the failing parts, and finally they give thier customers an extended warranty. I have never delt with a car company that would completely take car of a problem like this. Read some other mfg. Forums ie. BMW, Honda, Toyota, GM, Ford, and you'll see some problems going on forever with the failing parts being replaced with same parts until out of warranty and the dealers are doing nothing to take care of the customer. I am thankful that I have such a great car backed up by a great car company.

I received this letter as well, and also read it to mean that I would get an increased loyalty incentive.
Specifically, it said "We know we may have disappointed you... we want to make further amends for our mistake by providing a comprehensive Audi Owner Loyalty incentive of up the $3,000 off your next Audi purchase or $1,500 on your next Audi lease."
Well, I called this week to find out what my additional loyalty incentive for a new purchase would be and found out that this is the plain old loyalty discount. According to Audi, the letter was just trying to make me aware of the program. How this consistutes "further amends" is beyond me.
Very disappointed.

So I took it in for 5K service and they topped off the coolant in the Resevoir to 1/2 way between Min & Max. I now have 7,900 miles and it's exactly at MIN? It shouldn't be using coolant! had the same problem with my car back in late 2010, and soon after had continuous problems with my car's engine and the way it runs. mechatronic, ecu, transmission, and motor mounts have all been replaced and still having problems to this day with the car. audi has told me that the remedy is a software update, but that it isn't working on one anytime soon. i've felt pretty much stuck with these problems, and after visits to 3 separate dealers, can't find any real support to help alleviate the issues. :(

Overheated last night. No coolant was missing. Car was towed to the dealer. I had this happen about 2 years ago at 12k miles and the thermostat was replaced. We'll see if it's the water pump this time or another thermostat. Car is at 51k miles with an extended warranty until 70k I believe. I'm curious to see how this goes considering the car has not been seen by a dealer since the software and intake were installed.

Looks like thermostat is the issue. The service adviser also mentioned the water pump so I'm not sure if they are just talking about a proactive repair or if they found a leak or what. My question is this, should this be covered by Audi even though I'm out out of the 4yr/50k warranty? They are looking into the extended warranty provider right now but I thought these RVU items were covered past the original warranty.

SA told me that I'm covered under my extended warranty for $100. I decided to call AoA and see what they said. I gave them my VIN and they said I wasn't in the group for the water pump or the thermostat. I called AoA again and asked about the specific VIN ranges for each SB. They told me the VIN range for 2010 was AA003863 - AA183803 for the water pump 19H1 and AA007653 - BA055169 for the thermostat 19H3. I asked for a copy of the document but was told that it couldn't be sent out since not every VIN in those ranges are covered.

I too have the IC Screen Mod and wouldn't drive without it. Did your dealer complain about the screen? I'm concerned that they could blame water pump failure on the screen somehow, reduced air flow, something made up, etc.

Got the "stop driving, check coolant level" message on the dash yesterday morning.
Open the hood to find coolant very low and leaking/pooling on the tray under the radiator. Car was towed to the dealer who gave me a Prius as they were out of loaners (furt).
I'm guessing its the water pump even though the car is a 12' (built in 9/11 I believe). I didn't check to see if it's plastic. I bought the car with 5,800 miles 10/15/13 and it had about 8,100 miles on it when it failed on 12/20/13.
Was looking forward to showing my Dad the car as he flies in tonight for Xmas week. He's owned several German cars and will wonder why some guy in a silver Prius keeps honking at him as he looks in vain for a dark blue S4 when I go to pick him up at the airport.
Dealer said I can pick up an Audi loaner today. I'm thinking of going on a bike ride instead as I'm hoping they will be able to fix it on Monday.

Update: A rock punctured the aux. radiator. The dealer repaired it and installed the factory IC guard free of charge. I researched this on AZ and found that this is pretty common, so I will also consider installing my own screen in front of the factory guard as the aux. radiator appears very vulnerable.

Does your water pump production date mean June or October 2010?
Has Audi actually improved the design and durability of the thermostat since the first revision back in circa 2011?

June 10 2010 production date and before.
Not sure Audi has done a revision to the thermostat. As far as I know they still use the same one.

No, this was strictly an early 2010 issue from factory. Audi changed to a metal housing pump after the failures. The thermostat is another story however.

I have a little bit of strange info to add in here . I have replaced my water pump once and thermostat 3 times . The last time I did the stat was a month or so ago . Newest revision part from Audi . When I removed the old one I noticed the three prongs on the bottom , two of them had dark wear marks on them from what looked like rubbing . The strange thing I wanted to add here I just realized today . The day before I noticed temp problems and irregularities I had opened the coolant overflow while semi pressurized very carefully and the coolant sucked down and then re-pressurized . I wonder if this sudden draw or change in pressure while warm maybe caused the stat to POP or get cocked in the bore it rides in ?
Maybe I'm on to something ,maybe not . Just thought I'd throw my thoughts out there . Strange that when I did that just checking fluids that it would just happen that the thermostat gave me problems right after .
Anybody want to chime in ?

Should not have caused issues. Thermostats are temp based, meaning that as they get hot due to the fluid around them, they'll open up and as they cool down, they'll close. The spring is there to actuate the thermostat, not to act on pressure in the system. In fact, people used to test if a thermostat worked by putting them in boiling water to see if they'd open. I think the plastic that these things are made out of are just rubbish and will give out due to the heat as they become brittle. Why Audi would put plastic in there is beyond me. Especially since they know how fucking hard it is to replace it. If it didn't require removing the supercharger it would be one thing but I swear Audi engineers are the dumbest design engineers ever when it comes to packaging something for maintenance purposes. They not only do not do that, but they also pick the shittiest component material possible to make it even less bullet proof. [rolleyes]
At least it's easier to change than the 2.0T thermostat. I swear the easiest engines I've worked on were either Honda or Subaru. Japan can put an engine together designed for pretty straight forward maintenance and replacement of failed components if any.

The car temp would run up fast if I wasn't blasting the heat.

This thread title needs to be changed. Can a mod change it so that people who are new to this car, or considering buying one know that it is the thermostat that is faulty, and not the water pump?
Being that its a sticky its kind of a useless thread if its completely mislabeled and may confuse people.
Mine just failed too, 2012, 52000 miles. It was covered under a recall though.
Fans blasting, warning lights on dash coolant level was fine so I knew what it was (not that this would have helped anyway) !

third time in! two water pumps and now the thermostat or is it all one piece?
noticed my fan really loud for about a month. then on a hot day it went up to 110-and back down, let it sit for a week while my audi dealership tried to get me in. told me it was normal for the fluctuation in temp (i know better). started driving it for 5 minutes, and then it stayed at 110 no warning light.

Tstat was replaced at 5k.
I'm at 36k.. Dealer just replaced tstat about 2k miles ago while they were doing engine work as a precaution.
I always keep an eye on the coolant temp with my p3, fan kicks in at 219f for about 30 secs and brings it down to 200f.
Yesterday, the dam fan just stood on. Cruising, idling.. Whatever it's on full blast. Coolant does not want to go below 220 and reaches 230+ on the highway, but the fan is blowing ice cold air through the radiator when it's idling lol.
Looks like pump is on its way. ( I think.. It can't be the stat right? )
Guess I'll be joining you guys soon.
Edit: thermostat replaced, all good now.

Started smelling coolant for a few days after parking it in the garage. I was poking around under the hood and noticed some coolant in the front down near the bottom of the motor. Took it to Audi and they told me the seal on the water pump was leaking. Replacing under warranty today, I'll post up the repair sheet tomorrow.

My waterpump went 3 days after buying the car last week!
The temperature was constantly sat at 90 with the fan on, and then after a 30mile trip down the motorway it seemed to give up. The temp soared to 120 and warning signs came up on the dash to stop immediately.
Needless to say I wasn't happy with the dealership.. the S4 has 62k miles on it and it would appear this is the first time its happened.

2011 S4 with DSG. Original thermostat was replaced under warranty in 2013 at 22k miles. The 2nd stat just failed yesterday at 46k miles. With these continuing thermostat failures on the factory Audi part 06E121111AL, has anyone tried an alternative/aftermarket? Really don't want to be doing this again in 25k miles.

"Replaced under warranty", so it was by the dealer. The cooling system was tested by the dealer at the time, and they said the pump was showing no issues, that with my build date, it had the upgraded pump.
This time, though, I'm planning to replace the stat myself. So I'm willing to look at alternatives to another 06E121111AL. Otherwise I'll be picking one up from Audi tomorrow. Just got the supercharger off tonight.

Ok
Just had to ask about the pump
On my 2010 the pump blowup at 9000 miles (thermostat was fine )
They replaced pump and thermostat at the same time and extended my warranty to 6 years or 100000 miles on the drive train .
All the 2010 and some 2011 had that issue and were recalled
Car has 82000 now and never had any issues since
Good luck

Update...
After fighting with getting everything out of the way and ultimately removing the failed stat, turns out the dealer back in 2013 replaced the original one with another 06E121111AD part! F-me.
No wonder it failed again so quickly.
Perhaps by installing the improved 06E121111AL stat, I'll get more than 25K miles out of it!

I got a new clutch installed at JHM recently and at the time they said my water pump was leaking and to bring it to the dealer to get replaced. With a new born baby and no time on my hands I've just been monitoring coolant temps and level every time I drive my car and have never noticed anything abnormal or any coolant missing. I've driven about 1400 miles now, whoops! If they didn't see that leak I would never know anything was wrong. Now I know I need to get this fixed but is this normal to drive for so long without it failing? If it's leaking how come my coolant level has stayed at max? Also wondering if I should replace the Tstat at the same time. Thanks!

Just to share my misfortunes...
2013 Premium Plus 6-speed S4. 49965 on the Odometer, factory warranty expired last f*cking month (after careful deliberation and the fact that I've thus far had 0 mechanical problems with the car, I opted out of purchasing extended warranty). Awesome luck!
2 days ago get in my car after work to find the "low coolant level" message on the dash. Pop the hood, coolant level is about 1-2 inches filled from the bottom of the tank, with leaked coolant noted below the motor on the floor. Hesitating to drive the car 5 miles to the nearest dealer (had some time constraints), I decided to bite the bullet and drove it to the dealer (temp stayed same as it normally does throughout the drive). Yesterday dealer calls and says it is the water pump that's leaking and they're asking almost $1,500 for total repairs (apart from the BS $175 "diagnostics charge"). I told them the situation that my warranty JUST expired and odds are that the coolant was leaking while I still had warranty anyway, as well as the fact that this is a known problem on these cars. The "service advisor" seemed very understanding and said he would talk to his superiors. Comes back, says that Audi itself is willing to cover 30% and the dealership will cover additional 20% of the cost, lowering the total to around $750. I say OK, that's much better than nothing... I then decide to call Audi Headquarters myself (because why the f*ck not?) and explain the current situation - lady on the other line agrees with everything I am saying (yea, whatever, I know) and says she will get back to me in a couple days to see if Audi can re-imburse me for the TOTAL cost. After I get off the phone with her, the service advisor from the dealer calls me and says they're "willing to lower the cost to $496" instead of the $750. Even better. So I got the car back today and everything is as good as new, ended up paying $496. Got a voicemail a few hours ago from Audi saying my case is still "under review" so have to wait probably until early next week on the decision. Overall, I guess I am satisfied with what the dealer did but hopefully Audi can go the extra mile.
Got the new A4 S-line as a loaner, as an aside... Really thought the interior "felt" more modern but something about it was not as inviting as my '13, maybe I am just not used to it. But the touch sensitive buttons, the screen dash and the damn LEDs everywhere in the cabin did seem pretty sweet. Power delivery was a joke though with a significant lag. Aaaanyway...
That's my story. Will update next week after I find out what happens. Thanks for reading, chaps.

2016 S4 in for the 45k mile prepaid maintenance with the 36k miles on it and mechanic spotted a leaky water pump. I hadn't noticed anything myself but haven't been checking under the hood since I still have what I would consider low mileage. After reading through this thread you would hope that Audi had solved this problem. I have been through engine cooling Hell with a BMW 5 series and not looking forward to embracing this. $1100 to replace at the dealer and $975 at an indy. Indy does include a new thermostat.
There are only a couple of small white spots below the water pump and the tech said she saw the coolant was an inch or two below the Min line. Safe to drive for awhile or just bite the bullet and get it replaced? Like I said, once I started replacing these parts in my 530i, it was a never ending cycle of failure but the mileage was much higher and that car was twice as old.

If you're comfortable turning some wrenches yourself, you can do this yourself for about $200 in parts and a day or two of your time. I've never worked on one of these engines before, and just did the whole shebang - PCV, intake valve cleaning, injector service, water pump, thermostat, and all the associated gaskets etc. It's really not a tough job as long as you're following one of the DIY's here, and you accumulate all the little tips & tricks that people offer throughout the comments. If you're just going to do the water pump and t-stat, I'd say that could be done in an afternoon. Service position is totally worth the extra working space... might take you half an hour to get there for the 1st time.

I wish I could do it but I generally don't have the experience nor the tools to do it myself and I wouldn't want to risk doing something wrong. I'm just wondering if other people are still seeing these premature failures on the newer S4's or if I am just unlucky. If this is still a problem then I was thinking about calling Audi.

Took car to shop to try and diagnose why it randomly stalled / engine died in traffic. They suggested (in addition to other things) to replace the water pump because there is some play in the pulley attached to it. It's a 2014 w/ 73k miles on it. Is this something I need to do now? Or can I wait until it actually starts leaking?
