well, after sleeping at the idea for a while I finaly decided to build a carputer. Since I have a 99.5, I went ahead and bought a 00+ radio cage, climate control, and ashtray. The monitor is a Xenarc 7" widescreen touchscreen lcd which will molded into the dash. The carputer will have a slot dvd/cd player in the center console, GPS Navi, Voice comand, on board Vag-Com, Wireless networking, 5.1 DTS surround sound, XM, TV Tuner, and all the other good stuff you can epect from a PC. I cant wait wo get the monitor so that I can get started.

my question for those who have a carputer:

what software do you use to create the skins?

This is such a great post. The best thing about building a carputer is that you can put all your media on the hd. so noone can steal your damned cd books!!!! not to metion if you have wireless you can park your car in your driveway upload all the songs you just d/l in your house to your car in seconds.... Or driving in a large city where they have businesses that use huge wireless networking hubs that broadcast up to 1/2 mile. you can park in their lot and "borrow" their internet access. I saw a special on tech tv about that.

that's actually a good idea. If there were a way to wire a bigger external screen and have it play music through your car sound system, that would be hot.

So are you gonna mold it to the dash on your own, or have some one else do it? Where are you mounting the motherboard/HD? And can you tell us the final price on it all?

thats were everone goes wrong you dont need a ton of fiberglass on small parts because after u sand it down u still have to fill it and build it bac up w/ short strand fiberglass like thishttp://speedofsoundtech.com/album8/photos/photo24.jpg

media engine website has the sharkwebs skit among others. Even though the skin loks good, it doesnt have everything i need. as I will have XM and TV and onboard VAG-COM.

The total price for the parts came out to over $1200, thats for everything

motherboard
40GB HD
512DDR RAM
WiFi
TV/FM
Voice guided GPS
XM
slim slot drive to go indash above the screen
mini case with auto power supply
LCD touchscreen
5.1 sound card
+ a bunch more i needed.

The whole computer will be about 7x7x3" and will be in the trunk.
the screen will be molded in dash along with IR sensor for the wireless keyboard and remote. The slim DVD/CD-RW slot drive will alos be in dash above the screen and will lookoem with just a slot for the disk.

The sweet thing about running XM throught the PC is that it can can save every song thats played in MP3 forman and automatically name the files.....which meand I will have unlimited new music[:D]

there is soo much more that the carputer will do that I just cant mention everything

There's lots of different software frontends out now from various mp3car.com members. I edited an existing skin to have the Audi logos - I use this with the Frodoplayer frontend...

and rieger - since you have the 00 center console, you might try to do what I did...

Let me ask a dumb question. What is the best way to have acess to your cd rom drive? Are you just gonna get out and go to the trunk?

IndieRockSteve
03-02-2005, 01:44 PM
damn i need to do this.

Brrman, i take it your using a touchscreen?

do you have any more pics of the hardware setup?

G4TTO
03-02-2005, 03:04 PM
Rieger.. just some questions?

motherboard - what type of mother board?
WiFi - what type of car?
Voice guided GPS - Whats the brand?
slim slot drive to go indash above the screen - Website?
LCD touchscreen - Price and link if you have one? Type?
5.1 sound card - manufacturer?

you dont have to answer these if you dont want to.. just something that im looking to do, and need some ideas of brand and what not. I think this is going to come out good. Nice Job.

can you send me the skin? I'll just PS it with the audi logos.

Also, I might just crap the case and put everything in dash, that would make it so much easier then running an extension from the slot dvd drive which will have to go slim to IDE adapter and then IDE to USB since i needed to run it like 8ft...........it dash would make it soo much easier

I was thinking about doing this for a WHILE! I like the computer behind the dash! That's amazing, that setup with a slot loading DVD below or above (depending on if it clears the shifter) would be perfect IMHO. Only real complicated issue is auto power on/off and building a "desktop" that doesn't skip going over bumps.

as far as the slod dvd drive, it will clear everything as it will go on top of the screen and i'm going relocate the screen buttons to the side alonf with maybe an SD card slot

I've actually tried to play with centrafuse and its nicely integrated Destinator 3.......I'll have to wait for the final release as I'm sure it will be pretty sweet. I might just make an audi skin fo it.

Ya, second that, will it overheat in the dash? $1200 for all that? And Rieger, are you molding the dash yourself?

I do all the custime work myself. Did the current headunit setup, molded my S4 sides and shaved the lower door mouldngs my self..........

how do u guys keep the components cool inside your dash??? i can imagine it gets pretty hot in there, especially after sitting in the sun.

mine will still go in the trunk, that way there wont be any heat problems + if I have to add or change something I can do it easily without taking the dash apart

Brrman
03-03-2005, 10:20 PM
I havent had any heat problem with mine in the dash - though I have not gone a summer with it yet. If I have problems, it just means some more work... heh. A carputer is never done...
