View Full Version : Erratic door lock upon exiting car

Just got my car back from dealer for 25K service. Asked them to check the door lock/unlock when turing the car off.

Symptom: when I turn the car off sometimes all doors unlock, sometimes they don't. Totally erratic. Service writer said his wife's Q7 does the same thing and he can't figure it out. Thinks he/we are doing something, some sequence of events when turning the car off, where sometimes the doors unlock and sometimes they don't. Says they checked it and didn't see any problems.

I feel like I really need to call BS on that because I've got a 6MT and can't imagine any other sequence than simply turning off the ignition. Now that I think if it, I suppose it could be whether or not the p-brake is engaged. I mean that's the only other thing you do when turing the car off besides.... turning it off.

Anyone else have this erratic door lock behavior when turning the car off?

Side story 1:
- Went to grocery store straight from getting car back from dealer. Turned it off, got out, and reached in backseat to get groacery bags. Doors had unlocked.
- Got groceries loaded and went home. Turned it off, got out, went to get groceies from backseat and MUTHERFERK! if the dam doors hadn't unlocked.
- Before someone says it, the lesson is to put groceries in trunk.

Side story 2:
For free loaner, I was offered a 2010 A4 Avant auto or a 2011 A3 S-line 6MT. No brainer. I was psyched!, and getting more psyched by the second as dude pulls it around. Sweet looking little ride. Black on black. S-line. Looking tough. BUT THEN, as we're inspecting it, dude sees a screw in the tire. NOOOO! I was like, let's put on the spare! Nope, it's a donut. I was like, let's get the jack and take a wheel off another car. I WANT THIS A3! Dude laughed.

Alas, I had to take the Avant. Nice family car, buy the way, but left me wondering what that little A3 would have been like.

Mine always unlocks when i pull the key out of the ignition. Not before and not after that.

My issue is when the car locks itself. I had it lock the doors while it was running once...that was not fun...

The auto unlock process only unlocks to the same level as it was before you started the engine.

If you only unlock the driver's door and drive the car away, driver's door locks and when you turn the engine off and remove the ley, only the driver's door will unlock.

If you unlock ALL doors (2 pushes of the remote) before driving away, ALL doors will lock and when you turn the engine off and remove the key, ALL doors will unlock.

Trust this resolves your problem.

If you open the drivers door before pulling the key out, your doors will not unlock.

Wow. Really? That's some deep thinking from Audi*. I'll have to try it out. Thanks for the tip! [thumbs up icon]

*Gotta love the zine. Learned yesterday of another Audi wonder-thought. Apparently the TMPS monitors the air pressure of spare tire as well. Never would have guessed.

OK, thanks. Don't think I do this often/ever, but I'll keep it in mind.

Weird, my car unlocks all 4 doors and the trunk with one push of the key phob...

Weird...my car still unlocks when I take the key out of the ignition even if I already have the door open.

Means someone's already done the VCDS mod to allow that. Pretty certain the factory default is 2 clicks to unlock all doors.

Ahh...I hadn't heard of the vag mod for that. I guess that must be the case though. The car also doesn't have the seatbelt chime, and when I went to mod the window settings to go down with the keyphob, the values were already set (even though the windows didn't already roll down for some reason).

my car sometimes locks itself when engine is running... for example I let it run, open the door, run to my house if I forgot something, voila- the car is locked and the key is inside. Now I always leave the windows down when exiting the car (if engine is running)

Ugh. That's not encouraging.

blast from the past.

my front passenger door doesnt lock at all (Ive tried locking from inside, and from outside with the clicker). Every other door locks and unlocks, except the front passenger. Odd thing is, it worked Saturday, but I noticed this issue this morning...only thing I can think of that happened between then and now is I had my APR Stage 2 flash done at Waterfest...

Any thoughts?
