Before when I ran the tp w/ exhaust system i would spike ~19lbs and hold ~16lbs. Then i got into some trouble with the state troopers over my "illegal, aftermarket, loud exhaust" and put in my stock cat (still running exhaust system) and now i only spike ~15lbs and hold maybe ~12lbs.

I miss those ~4 lbs [poop]

I guess it's time to get a HFC.

Did the state troopers pull you over specifically for the exhaust, or was it just an add on? If I was back in CO, I would say that I'd take the test pipe off your hands...

That sucks...I havent gotten pulled over for that....yet :P

first pulled me for my tint (2% from legal) then told me aftermarket exhaust is illegal in the state of CO.

Are HFC's worth it though? the reason I haven't swapped back to TP is because i'm waiting for my next emissions test

I don't have a HFC, but from what I've heard, they seem to let the turbo spool almost as fast. I've heard people saying that they lose about 1lb from what they would have been at with TP...

I can't believe they pulled you over for tint... I'm glad I haven't had any problems with my tint yet.

should do the HFC just on the environmental front alone...it's not like you can't afford it....if you can afford a car like yours you can certainly afford to make it run as clean as most anything else on the road.

besides the sound, I felt very little difference (performance-wise) when I wised up and put on the 034 HFC. I will also say if you're worried about
the fraction of HP that you gain from a straight pipe without any element, than big ol' fat cars like ours may not be the best choice, since simply trimming weight would be more effective than the TP.... my 2 cents...as a converted HFC owner now. I feel like this may also be one of the reasons why one can almost always find TPs on sale in the classifieds--people finally realize that they may not be all that they're cracked up to be. But to each his own. Feel good about moving towards the HFC though!!

I have yet to catch any crap about my HFC. Even when I got pulled over on E470 the trooper didn't even mention my exhaust, granted I turned the car off before he got out.

OP, i live in CO too and yes i have 4 exhaust tickets on my record (suprising that none of them came from my fully catless subaru pushing 110 decibels.) They claim than ANY exhaust modification even if its below the legal Decibel requirements and still passes emissions is Illegal. What it really comes down to is how big of a dueche the cop that pulled you over is. I always use the excuse "i bought my car with the exhaust on it" and yes i have a catylitic converter. I am running the 034 HFC

034 Motorsports is worth it. I noticed gains when I installed mine. Plus in Ca at least you pass smog (we have some strict air laws).

I net we have the same exhaust!

Ever since the issues with my hfc on my jetta, I have been fearful of hfcs. The actual elements within the hfc actually burnt through and I could no longer pass emissions. On this car, I decided to do test pipe to steer clear of any such issues this time.

Just a question since all us CO boys are in here already,

Do those emissions trucks on the side of the road just read emissions from cars, or do they actually cite tickets? I'm not too worried since my car is registered in Wyoming, but I was just curious.

A4 Awesome: Have you passed smog in CA with the HFC on your car? Do you have any other exhaust mods? Did the neuspeed tune come before or after the HFC?

Thanks.

As far as I know, they do not issue tickets. If you fail, you are automatically registered to have to go take emissions when your 2 years is up. If you pass one twice or more in the 18 months before your time is up, then you get a notice in the mail where you just have to mail in a check for emissions, but you don't actually have to go take emissions. You cannot pass an emissions van twice in one day. That will not count as your two times.

Dude, you must have some really bad luck. Been running mine for over 4 years. Never, EVER heard that BS from a CSP or Local PD. Tinting or otherwise. Sorry to hear you have been "marked" by the cops. Guess you need to change cars?

Just paint it blue or something now and get a vanity plate. I think this situation also calls for some new wheels.

Haven't caught any trouble for my exhaust...all depends how you drive it. Cruising around its not bad at all, but WOT it is rather loud. Guess it all depends on the cop that you get.

Completely change up the look of the car. The cops won't know what hit them tell they run the plates and see it registered under your name...

besides the sound, I felt very little difference (performance-wise) when I wised up and put on the 034 HFC.

So I have a question for you... The drone in my avant with a TP and Neuspeed exhaust is brutal.... With the stock cat, it was bearable... How much louder did your exhaust get with 034 HFC vs stock cat... I'm about to cut up my DP and throw another resonator in... Don't know if I should though...

bblume
09-12-2010, 07:50 PM
^^^before you go adding resonators, I'd get on the HFC first. I feel like it's just right...not so toned down like a stock cat, so you and others still know you have an exhaust...but at the same time the drone is definitely less plus you still get the fast-spooling action.
