97-99.5 (AEB cylinder head): Big Port
00-01.5 (ATW/AWM cylinder head): Small Port

ATW's and AWM's are small port
AEB's are big port

Since you've got a 2001, order a small port spacer

*EDIT*
Seerlah beat me to it :)

seems illogical why they would make it more restrictive as the yeard went by lol......

Most of the changes in the 1.8T were done for emissions purposes. I could be wrong, but I would assume that was the reason here as well. Smaller port means higher intake velocity, leading to better fuel atomization and a more complete burn. Or something like that. Also, smaller ports help with bottom end torque, of which we have very little to start with, haha.

Other specific changes (different catalytic converter, hotter sparking push-down coils, Variable Valve Timing, wideband o2 sensor) helped the 2001 model year A4 1.8T achieve ULEV status (Ultra Low Emission Vehicle).

Semi on topic, what's everyone's opinion on the spacer? Worth getting?

Meth is a way better option, but more costly (with more benefits, especially with tune). If you feel the cost justifies the means, then by all means purchase. But meth is a way better alternative (with or without tune) for cooling IATs.

Agreed, however theres no harm in doing both if/when he goes that route.

Obviously meth is a much better option for cooling IAT's. But, for the price, is the spacer worth it? I mean, for $60, does it drop the IAT's enough to warrant spending the money?

I guess there will need to be real world records to see how much of an improvement it makes. You can also purchase it and log IAT differences of before and after. I think that alone is worth the $60.

speaking of those cups...is there a way to get those out short of buying a gigantic hex?
