Disclaimer: I've searched and re-searched to a point of obsession. This thread is to help spur some conversation on ideas and surprises that current and previous 20v turbo owners have had in the past. Please chime in if you can offer any constructive help.

What's up??
I'm coming close to buying an urs6 avant. 170k miles, timing belt done at 120k, lots of new little maintenance bits and pieces that I'm happy with, HID's and a TAP chip (was it a flash back then or a real chip?) with 1.8t Apikol coils. Otherwise it's stock.

Engine mgmt- Should another timing belt job be done soon? I come from the world of B6 1.8t's where half of the crowd are on top of their shit and the other half wind up posting the exclamatory "water pump died, belt slipped, I'm screwed" story. I don't want to F this car up. Should it be done every 60k miles +/-??
Anything else at this mileage level?
As for this TAP chip, I've heard it's not the greatest but because I didn't pay for it I'm not really worried that another brand might put out 5-10 hp more. Is there anything inherently bad about this chip or is it just that there are better ones? There is no mention of a diverter valve upgrade, should this be done?

BT- I'd love to. But further down the line. I've seen a ton of builds and simple bolt-on jobs. At what point would you have to upgrade the clutch? I see Anthony is putting down respectable power with no build, a stock clutch and conservative tune on his 3071 so I'm assuming somewhere over the 400 hp point? I think the 350 level is plenty for me as this will be my DD. Also, has anyone done dual SMIC's rather than a big front mount? I personally don't love the look of the massive Evo-style FMIC on such a classy sleeper, but maybe an anodized one would clean it up.

It looks like anyone who put the effort into it is going with a 3" turbo back exhaust. I definitely would like to keep the cat (I live in NJ -read- strict emissions tests, and coincidentally love the Earth for the long haul) and be as close to no drone as possible while of course justifying the purchase with a little growl. 034's is pricey and is pretty loud for my taste. How would I go about sourcing a nice custom setup with a resonator? Muffler suggestions?

This thing is in full blown 4x4 mode. The 2 Bennett c/o kit seems to be the go-to but is there a Frankenstein style suspension job that can be pieced together and make me happy? I don't really think I'd ever adjust the coils after I found the right height and feel. Does anyone have an opinion on this as suspension would probably be my #1 priority. After which, I'd be on to some wheels... ahhh the wheels. The current 4x4 status is enhanced by the stock Avus which I believe are 16" right? My USP Avant came with the old B5RS4 18" wheels which I absolutely love. I do however dig RS2's and their Porsche cups. Is 18" to big for this car? Does anyone have pics of said cups on their avant?

What big brakes are people happy with? I see the Boxter brakes a lot, along with some other Porsche styles like what came on the RS2. Are the stockers really that bad?

A question representing my esteemed guests riding in the back for 7 hours up to VT- what kind of rear legroom are we looking at? My A4 was tiny as all hell. I realize that this is kind of a bs question but what's it like riding back there, comparable to modern A6s like the allroad?

And finally a few words on appearance. There is a little rust on the back gate around the window. What should I be looking to spend on having it sanded out, Bondo'd (oops I didn't say that) and resprayed? How about the whole car for a respray? Cartel just RS4'd his B5 avant and I think he paid something outlandish for the paint job- albeit a ridiculously awesome yellow. I'm looking for reasonable, not astronomical.
Can you change the seats out for any other oem setup?
How about changing the look of the center console and the shifter area? It kind of looks silly how it sits up so high. Short shifter and a different leather hood to surround it? Call me crazy, but with how sick the steering wheel and gauges are that stick looks like its out of a mid-70's Datsun.
Where does one search for body kits? Namely front and back bumpers- can an RS2 front end fit a C4 avant? I know about ebay.de but I dont spreck any Deutsch.

I keep saying the words RS2...maybe I should just move to Europe!!

OK gents, happy Friday and have at it.

Yes, you need to do the timing belt soon. Mine was also done at 20k on my 3B (Audi 200 20v) and at 170 is was starting to come apart. Teeth were shearing off. So yeah, every 50k is even a good idea. You will want to do a waterpump, and any tensioners at the same time. Might also want to take a look at your crank cog. They are known to crack and mine was indeed cracked. If it breaks, you loose your engine. You can either buy a new, stock one ($95) or get a hardened steel one that will never ever break for $250 from EFI Express.

Only upgrade your diverter valve if your stock one fails. You should be OK with that chip, but if it bothers you, you can contact Ben Swann for a great chip or you can go standalone engine management. It all depends on what you see in your future.

Basically if you plan to go with a bigger turbo, you should plan on a better clutch too. That being said, I think the stocker is good for somewhere in or slightly upwards of the 300awhp area. I have no idea how long it would last there though.

You can't screw up the sound on these cars. If you have a muffler, you are good. A muffler and a res. will really be fine no matter what you choose. Can't go wrong with Borla and Magnaflow is pretty good too. You might not NEED 3" all the way thru for the power you are looking at, but its not a bad idea either. 2.5" would suffice. With a cat though, you are going to want 3". Even those high flow ones are quite restrictive. Go blow a big fan into one if you want to see just how terrible they are (cats in general).

You can do custom coilovers as I did on my car. There is a lot of info in my thread on motorgeek. Search DIY T44 coilover. It might not all directly apply to a URS6, but it should be fairly similar.

What big brakes are people happy with? I see the Boxter brakes a lot, along with some other Porsche styles like what came on the RS2. Are the stockers really that bad?

I run Boxster S brakes. I like them a lot. Unless you track your car or have UFO's (you don't have UFO's), its probably not going to be worth it to you.

I'm not really at liberty to answer the rest of the questions as they are more URS centric, but I'm sure others will chime in. Sorry if I wasn't thorough enough, but I'm in a rush!

Good luck.

if your looking for 350hp crank take a look at 034's k26/gt28rs.

i personally wouldnt spend that type of money on that hp goal.

Thank you for the timely replies. Turbo-wise, yeah I agree. If I'm going to spend 3+ grand for a setup after a fuel pump and intercooler I'm going to want 350 at the wheels. 350 crank converts to what probably 275 awhp? Good to know about the suspension. What sucks is I'm spending imaginary money on a car I don't even have. Reading build threads and mental shopping on 034's site is TORTURE!!!
Fingers crossed.

if you want 350 to the wheels i would go with a mild tune on a 3071r

Believe me, I know the obsession well. [evilsmile]

As for wheels, I think 18"s look great on the car. I've seen larger, but I wouldn't do it myself. I'm extremely happy with my 18"x8.5" RH ZW4's.

Talk to Christian at 034 about suspension as well. He was telling me about another kit for the Ur S4/S6 awhile back, but I cannot recall which brand it was...

Ahhh the master has spoken!
I agree with the 18"s (especially yours- 3pc cup style FTW) anything larger would be uncharacteristic to a VAG car. Does an 18" spare fit in the compartment? I guess it would depend on how much rubber you're running.
I will definitely be in touch with 034 as is needed.

How's the avant running?

I don't have a 5th matching 18", so couldn't say for sure. I'm actually looking to remove the "rumble seat", folding floor, and spare in order to save some weight...a lot of weight. I don't take it on long road trips or anything, as it gets me in too much trouble as it is, but overall it's running great and puts a smile on my face every time I take her out!

Some answers...

Tap chip, get rid of it. Upgrade to anything. You will be amazed at how much more drivable the car is with good software. And it's not just the 5-10hp improvement. It's the torque and boost curve that you will notice a difference with.

Brakes. You will want to upgrade at some point even if you don't plan on tracking the car. The stock G60's are insanely heavy and not sufficient enough for the car. I think a Boxster S kit would be perfect for daily use.

As for leg room in the back, there is plenty. Way more the the A4. It is a big bodied car.

And finally, visual. There really isn't much you can do to change the look of these cars. Change the wheels, paint some trim. Best way to change the look is euro bumpers. They make the car look a ton better. LLtek also has a solution for the front bumper.
For the interior, you're kinda stuck. No oem seat fits other than the stock recaro and it's hard to put aftermarket seats in place. You can shorten the shift lever with a pipe cutter. But then you're stuck using an aftermarket knob.

Good luck with anything you change. Just hit us up for more questions.
