What is this on the lips of the rim? And how should I go about removing/refinishing it?

I think there was a thread about this about a year ago but I can't find it.

Its not on the wheels. Its under the clear coat. Its the metal corroding. You would have to stripe the cc off the wheels and polish them and then re clear coat. Or just powder coat them.

i don't think its pitting. its not powdery. its almost like little spider webbings/squiggly lines.
when it was first developing i had a feeling it was the clear coat. i think bigblue is right.

Yep. Oxidation under the clear coat. It is aluminum's version of rust under the paint. I'd media blast and powdercoat. Clear powdercoat looks great and is durable but you would have to polish the lips between blasting and coating. They could be blasted and then coated with a metallic like a bright titanium or even one of the chrome-ish powders.

thanks everyone! i think i'm just gonna strip the clear coat and repolish it (vs. media blasting and powder coating them), they're pretty cheap rims and aren't in very good condition, its not worth spending the money to have them powder coated.
