View Full Version : GMR mountain run part2 - who's in?

UPDATE - in bold

Where = Glendale Mountain Road run:

When = Sunday 6th June, 8am.

OK guys, here's the deal.

Meeting place:

McDonald's
1835 East Route 66
Glendora, CA 91740-3866

In this little shopping area there's a Starbucks, Del Taco, Stater Bros, American Diner, Shell fuel station, donuts and a few other places.

Huge car park and a good place to meet as it's right at the bottom of the mountain.

We could meet around 8am to catch the coolest air and get a jump on any poss weekend crowd. Plus some people will take longer to arrive so it's a good place to wait, have a coffee etc until everyone arrives.
Then we just make our way to the start of the climb.

The route is a real bitch to plan if you want to drive the "actual GMR" itself.

As of right now I'm thinking this:

The one road people often leave out of their GMR run is the GMR itself!!. This seems a shame as it looks to be easily the most fun way of getting up to the Ridge Road. Problem is that starting here makes the route much shorter than starting at the more traditional places. But I think going up the actual GMR would be great. We can all do other routes/runs at other times. In fact there's a big meet the following weekend that is doing the more traditional route!

So by cutting the full route by around 1/3rd we'll be up and down pretty quickly. My guess is about 1 1/2 to 2 hours max with a couple of stops to view/take pics etc. We can easily find somewhere to gather again at the bottom where we can grab food/coffee etc afterwards.

So here's the route with start and ends:

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=1835+East+Route+66,+Glendora,+CA&daddr=34.203967,-117.808821+to:Glendora+Ridge+Rd+to:550+East+Baseli ne+Road&geocode=FfDECAIdvw76-CmLHkBfVS_DgDEkb0gAKZpNQw%3B%3BFZxmCgId0qb8-A%3BFbekCAId-PL7-CmjIa33TDDDgDERLdyZ577BqA&hl=en&mra=dme&mrcr=0,1&mrsp=1&sz=17&sll=34.205698,-117.804615&sspn=0.00819,0.016426&ie=UTF8&ll=34.179288,-117.761421&spn=0.131078,0.262814&t=h&z=13

My thought right now is to stagger the starts so that we don't bunch up too much and loose anyone's rhythm. I would also like to find a spot to stop and take pics on the accent if possible.

Let me know who's up for it.

Please leave your name and what you're driving - it makes it easier to form a list.

Also please contact anyone you know who might like to go, from other forums etc, and point them to this thread.

Anyone interested in this should subscribe to this thread to stay up to date.

Cheers all.

whats the name of the restaurant?

It's called the Mount Baldy Lodge. I ate there with a friend from the UK last year. Excellent food, good choice of drinks, decent prices and great service.

If anyone here doesn't go to the Pasadena meeting every other Wednesday they might want to head over there next Wednesday for a meet, greet and chat.

Hi all,

OK, I'll be contacting the Mount Baldy Lodge eatery to let them know they'll have a mob of Euro drivers heading their way next Sunday. I have little idea of how long it takes to drive the GMR but I'm pretty sure we'll be at the top long before lunch. Once there can can get eats/coffees - indeed anything people want. We could even finish the accent and drive all the way to the ski lift car park and hang there for a while if so desired.

I think I'm the only one so far who's flying the A6 flag - as usual - LOL!

So let's see if we can get a few more takers over the next few days. I'll be at the Pasadena meet on Wednesday and hopefully I'll be able to drum up some more cars there. Once we have a pretty firm idea on numbers I'll post more info and thoughts around mid week.

Cheers guys and looking forward to seeing everyone.

3mm!!!!

Might see you through if you're gentle and use your chassis/engine more than your brakes. I will be replacing my own brakes for much up rated units in the near future but for this run the old ones will have to suffice.

yeah really worn down but ok I think I'll replace the pads this saturday
and when I get the rotors just do the front pads over again IF they need
to be replaced I know people say you shouldn't do that replace rotors
and not pads but I'm pretty sure I wont have the these oem rotors for

To be honest it's not as big a deal as it's made out to be. You can take it pretty easy and just enjoy the spectacular views or you can push it a little and learn something about your chassis/tire combo. Personally I won't be banzai running it myself as I've just sprang a small oil leak which I can't get fixed until after the run.
Just bring whatever you want and have a little fun.

Waiting for thoughts on final start/gathering time from everyone but weather is looking great and I'm looking forward to a nice Sunday drive - LOL!!

Max,

It was just a thought as the route is shorter than the full version by about 10 miles.

Problem with changing the time now is that everyone will have to be notified. Unless they all subscribe to the thread I don't see a way to make that happen. To be honest, I see people not arriving until 8:30 - 9am anyway. So it's not a big deal.

I'll be there at 8 with coffee in hand. As people arrive it'll become a gathering so waiting won't be a gig issue I'm sure.

Cheers

You're going to spend 90% of your time in 1st, 2nd and 3rd gears on the way up. I'll me surprised if anyone gets into 4th anywhere - although I don't know that road as good as some of these guys.

Hill climbs are all about chassis and throttle control. You want the car as smooth and flowing as possible between the corners. When you get it right it feels like you're floating but with grip!

If you want track/race experience I'm thinking of putting together a track day this summer. More on that as I get the idea together.

Cheers.

Great news. I imagine the introductions are going to take a while as we now have quite a lot of cars.

What started out as a casual drive into the hills for me and a couple of others has turned into something pretty sweet. Can't wait to see everyone.

I'll be spending most of tomorrow working on my car in one small way or another. Bloody oil leak is going to stop me pushing it too hard but I'm still going to enjoy the handling.

On the Angeles Crest run last year we found that the B5 S4's tended to stick to 2nd and 3rd, while the V8 S4 guys were mostly 3rd and 4th. Low end torque ftw

Interesting. Maybe us Europeans like to the car to pull differently and choose gears accordingly. When I was on the GMR a couple of weeks ago it was pretty much all 1/2/3 gears on the way up. Maybe it's different at the top. I don't know as this is the first time I've been up to the top this direction.

Great time. Limited numbers but I guess that's to be expected that early on a Sunday morning. It was the right choice though as by the time we were heading down again it was getting pretty hot.

Yes mate. I also found out the reason the camera ceased operating is that in HD mode the maximum length of video is 10:30. I guess next time we need to drive faster!!!!

I can send you the vid or you can come grab it sometime. I really don't want to get into video editing and some of it is pretty boring. I think you could get about 5 good minutes out of it. Slam some serious music on it and we're rockin.

Nice....I was up until around 3am fwiw...dragged myself out of bed and didn't think I'd be able to stay awake...ended up having one of the best drives I've done in a while. Jeff, If you are around here, you would've loved it and I'll hit you up next time...

I guess the best thing to do is subscribe to any of these types of threads so you can keep up with this kind of stuff. It was a fun drive with some cool guys and I'm pretty sure we'll be putting together something else in the fairly near future.

Cheers

Put together the vid over the weekend but it's taking a really long time to upload...should be ready when I get home tonight.

Yes mate. Video is HUGE and slow when it comes to upload. I can't wait for the 4G tether solution to hit my EVO which will make my DSL look silly!

Can't wait to see what you did with the vid.

Cheers.

Nothing special...just cut the beginning and end to make it fit within the 10 min limit and added some music...

Looks great. Interesting choice of music!

Thanks for getting this online.

NOTE:

Before anyone asks, I'd like to make it clear I had a pretty expensive camera rather cleverly (even if I say so myself) connected to my passenger door which was positioned outside the car just above the door mirror. This made it rather precarious and for much of the decent I was watching the camera in hope that it wasn't going to fly off somewhere - and therefore not watching the road as carefully as I should have been. Hence the other cars screaming off into the distance at times.
You'll be glad to know the camera survived nicely with only some light cleaning required where I had actually managed to get it far enough to the right on corners to hit the foliage!

It was a good run and I think you get a pretty accurate sense of speed from the vid.

Cheers,

Glyn

Thanks for the great camerawork!...brushing the side of the road on some of those shots...We'll have to figure something out to make the camera secure to a point where you don't need to worry about it and you can just drive. Music was just the first things I threw on that kinda fit and a little different.
