View Full Version : JHM short shifter - how much does it improve shifting feel?

I need to buy a new B7 S-line shifter boot and knob (the leather is going bad on mine), and am considering upgrading to a JHM SS while I'm at it. However, I don't really want to reduce throw all that much, so I'd probably set it to 10% reduction. Is it worth getting the JHM just for improving the shifting feel? I'd love to tighten up the shifter a bit.

DO IT!!!!! it feels so much better than the stock shifter, feels a bit heavier but in a good way.
i actually was debating a 10% shorter throw too, but went with the 30% reduced throw and 1inch shorter kit, and now i kinda wish i went with the 45% reduction in throw lol. the stock shifter throw is wayyyyy too long, i would highly recomend trying the 30% first, or even 45%.

I'm also curious about this. Anybody here have one?
*EDIT* Haha, nevermind. Too slow in my reply. Sounds pretty nice.

Does it actually tighten up the tolerances and make the gates feel more exact? Or does it just feel heaver?

the gates are definately more pronounced, you can also feel the gear sliding in
i used the metal busings in the kit instead of the stock rubber ones, so once i'm in the gear, i cannot wiggle the shifter from side to side.

x2. This was one of the first mods I did, and still one of my favorites. JHM makes a fantastic product.

you might not think its worth it, but it is. its there every time you drive, i love the 30% i wonder what 40% is like. there is so much slop in the stock shifter the precision is amazing with the new ss.

It has me spoiled now, every other manual car I drive feels so sloppy compared to mine.

Is there any concern of damaging syncros due to the short shifter? I've heard various discussions that a short shifter can accelerate damage to the syncros. Don't know how true that is since I don't know much about how transmissions work. But if this is a safe upgrade, I'll defintely add it to the list of upgrades that I currently cannot afford. lol

usually one of my first mods as well. I got the Neuspeed SS cause no one else had one at the time. Either that or JHM didnt have one out yet. this was back in '07. Feels a lot better then stock. Also you should think about adding the JHM weighted shift knob. It adds a lil extra into it.

Send some PMs to jay. They're all over the boards and just did a group on the ER SMIC kits. I'm sure they'd be down. I will say this. The construction of this is second to none. You can't be disappointed.
